They didn't answer. Since inorganic forms of iodine are antibacterial, I would think that taking the tablet messes up your normal good bacterial levels. You can paint the bottoms of your feet with Lugols solution and regain your normal bacterial levels. That's what I did. Then I went to using 1 drop of Lugols solution twice a week. I haven't had any backups yet. bill
Guest guest
Ann, The occasional person reports constipation with Iodoral. I was able to talk to the pharmacist co-inventor at the last iodine conference about this. He seemed to think bromide detox might effect the neurotransmitters in the intestines. But my real concern is that progesterone, which is know to constipate by slowing down intestinal transit time, builds up in your system. (some call it progesterone dominance) Some alt med docs have reported this for years. I see Dr. Mercola has finally published a column about it. http://www.mercola.com/article/progesterone/cream.htm You might have a combination of both going on. Everybody Inknow who suffereb constipation has had it pass when more bromide gets detoxed. Hope this helps. When Bill applied the Lugols on his feet, he was getting way less iodine into his body than Iodoral. So a radical dosage cut was the most obvious explanation. Guest guest
I have only just started supplementing iodine, but 13 years ago I began taking magnesium to keep asthma at bay. It's done that, and I discovered it does eliminate constipation. In fact, if you take too much, you'll get diarrhea. It goes away as soon as you cut back on the magnesium. It's also the treatment that docs have begun to use as almost standard procedure for many ER situations--including stroke and heart attack. Now they immediately start an IV drip of magnesium. I think it's because we are depleted in that, too. Seems the RDA is probably set too low on Magnesium.I also read on the iodine4health website that you need to supplement vitamins C and D along with Magnesium and a host of other things, when you are taking iodine. Check it out.On Oct 1, 2007, at 12:27 PM, mkpro222 wrote:Hi,I am 47 years old and started using an OTC Progesterone cream 10 mos.ago to help with premenopausal symptoms - after 7 months of success Inoticed some of my symptoms creeping back and decided to try Iodoral tosee if that would help with my hypothyroid and premenopausal symptoms -I was surprised how quickly I started feeling relief - I started using1/2 12.5 mgs tablet daily for one week, then increased to 1-12.5 mgtablet daily - After a few weeks of this protocol I noticed someundesirable side effects - Increased appetite and dreadfulconstipation - I've decreased my Iodoral to 1/2 tablet daily but amstill suffering - I finally resorted to drinking an herbal coloncleanse tea but I don't think it is good idea to take on long termbasis - Can anyone recommend a supplement that can be taken to "keepthe plumbing" moving without any long term dependency issues or sideeffects ? Guest guest
I'm upset to learn that increased appetite can be a side affect of iodine. Plumbing: kefir. kefir worked when nothing else did. Lots of it. Loaded with probiotics. Plain old raw mild is supposed to be good also but I drink kefir because the fermentation process ups the anti for good bugs. Guest guest
I am sure the only reason why your appetite increases is due to the increase in metabolism from thyroid hormones. That's not a bad thing! Re: Iodoral side effects > I'm upset to learn that increased appetite can be a side affect of > iodine.
Guest guest
Potassium iodide, is an acidic preparation. In some of us, especially if your blood is on the thicker side, it has a tendency to dehydrate. (potassium has an affinity for hydrogen) I was able to remedy the constipation with some baking soda and water first thing in the morning, and again just before bed. (a quarter teaspoon in a small amount of warm water.) In addition, I took some B12 in the afternoon to help sequester excess Nitric oxide. (which tends to keep the bowels too relaxed) Liquid B12 works better for me, but it also comes in a lozenge. I did this for a week or so, and things were running normal again. Im not able to take iodoral because of the constipation issues. I tried lower, and higher doses, but no luck. See what's new at AOL.com and Make AOL Your Homepage. Guest guest
Have you tried painting it on the skin? I met someone last week that said they have seen great results from people painting a drop or two of the detoxified iodine on the skin. Worth a shot. Guest guest
Detoxified has only 220 mcg per drop and lugol's has 6.5 mg's with a vertical drop. What you could do is make a salve with the lugol's this will delute the iodine then apply the salve. -- Re: Iodoral side effects I've tried this and Lugols burns my skin. Guest guest
One way is to mix iodine with coconut oil, then use it as your moisturizer all over the body. It only slightly adds a little color (temporarily of course). The coconut oil soaks in nicely. BTW - anyone old enough to remember mixing iodine in baby oil when we WANTED to tan way back when? Baby oil probably wasn't so hot, but the iodine wasn't a bad idea, huh? > How do I do that? (salve) >
Guest guest
Hi - 0 yes, I'm old enough to remember that. And getting moles removed left and right now. Had squamous cell carcinoma, but back then, whooda thunk it. Do you put straight iodine in the VCO? I got some tinctre of iodine to do the patch test and it never stays on me for more than about 6 hours. . . Guest guest
I have used both tincture of iodine (with alcohol) and Lugol's (water based) on my skin - both are effective to remove all sorts of creepy growths on the skin. Painting does irritate surrounding healthy skin though. Coconut oil or " Really Raw " brand honey seems to soothe/heal. > > Hi - 0 yes, I'm old enough to remember that. Guest guest
I was the same way with starting the protocol. There was mention in this group and from what I read that you shouldn't take extra B2 and B3 (niacin) without a B complex. All the B vitamins work in synergy so it is important to include a B complex. My super fatigue symptoms subsided after including a B complex and Adrenergize. I think I had adrenal fatigue. Kathy T. From: reyna_lin <reyna_lin@...>Subject: Iodoral Side Effectsiodine Date: Tuesday, September 27, 2011, 7:14 AM I have read all the newbie information (just putting that out there first). I have also searched extensively. I started taking Iodoral 3 weeks ago and am up to 3 12.5 tablets a day(I take them all in the morning). I have Hashimoto's and also take 88mcg synthroid. Since starting to take the iodoral, I have been really really tired. Like super hypo TSH tired. I have also gained 7-10 pounds and even with 1000mg of magnesium at night, I am constipated. This is the opposite of what I thought iodine was supposed to do for me. I am taking all the companion nutrients (niacin, CoQ10, magnesium, vit c, chromium, vit D, CLO, L-Glutamine, a prenatal (I am still nursing my toddler) vit B2, selenium, etc.) It is not water weight gain, I have definitely had an increased appetite. Should I step up my dose or stop taking it and have my TSH checked? I noticed a couple symptoms of detox when I upped it to three tablets but did a salt flush and was fine afterwards - otherwise I don't think this is detox. Any opinions? Guest guest
Hi ,I wonder why you are taking Snythroid. You won't have the results you need with it. It is synthetic. In this group, we recommend Naturethroid or compounded dessicated thyroid. If you call a local compounding pharmacy, you will find someone who rx's it for you. Hopefully, if you have insurance, they will be in your health plan. If you don't, then you can go to whomever you want. I gained weight too at first. Am now taking the TLC product from Dr. Bernstein and chlorophyll and spirulina. Just the TLC didn't help. I am guessing my liver was pretty screwed up because of taking narcotics for a very long time. It was supposed to help with the pain, but of course, it just ruined my system. I also stopped because of needing to address adrenals. You say you are nursing a little one, so am not sure how that would work. Maybe someone else on here could help you with that. It is great your baby is getting Iodine. I am pretty sure that if my mother had been taking it I wouldn't have spent my life so sick. I think she was hypo too and wasn't being treated for that either. Your baby is lucky! My mom is taking Iodine now, so that is the good part! Guest guest
I eventually raised my thyroid meds dose after starting the iodine protocol. I realized just how good I could feel, and went ahead and raised it. My doctor doesn't force me into things, and I wanted to keep to a lower dose, thinking I wa somehow helping myself. NOT. He'd told me I would probably need 3 grains and he was right. 88mcg is not very much Synthroid. Also, I take NatureThroid, whole thyroid, and when I changed from Synthroid that changed my life. Suddenly I felt my energy was coming from inside me instead of imposed from the outside. So I strongly advise changing to a whole thyroid med, and suggest that you probably need more than you're getting. Also, if the mother is adequately treated for hypo, her children are less likely to become hypo. So the idea that less thyroid hormone is better or healthier is a crock. Quality of life dictates we take to the level we need. The thyroid actually uses a lot every day, a lot more than you're taking. Also, fatigue can be a detox symptom. It's very likely. And, it's not recommended to take more than 25mg of iodine per day if you start taking iodine while already pregnant or nursing, because the detox products can be transmitted to the child. Absolutely, the child needs the iodine and will be healthier for it. But you should keep it to 25mg for now (2 tbs of ioodoral). If you'd already been taking a high dose before you got pregnant, it's absolutely great to continue at that level. But beginning the iodine protocol while pregnant or nursing requires extra care. I know you say you don't think the fatigue is detox, but salt loading one time may not be enough to change all detox symptoms. Also, when I first started the iodine protocol my body was going through a lot of changes in the adjustment. I had increased appetite for a while, which I think was in part a response to just feeling better and having my metabolism more functional. Weight gain on iodine is specifically because the detox pathways are not working well enough for how much detoxifying the person is doing, so the body stores the detox byproducts in fat since it can't get rid of them any other way. This is covered in the New Member doc. So I recommend that you reduce the iodine to 25mg, which may well reduce your symptom of fatigue. Just plan to stay at that level until you stop nursing, or find a practitioner who is iodine protocol literate (admittedly, not easy to do), who can advise you on increasing iodine during this time. If your fatigue doesn't change, or in any case, I would look into taking more thyroid and certainly changing to whole thyroid like NatureThroid or Armour. But, be aware that sometimes people's TSH readings rise when they first start taking iodine, and this can cause false readings during testing. -- > I have read all the newbie information (just putting that out there > first).
