ok..the 9th edition was done in 1956.

In the section on " Thyroid " , there are sections for Hypothyroidism,

Hyperthyroidism, Nodular or Adenomatous Goiters, and Thyroiditis.

Iodine therapy is mentioned in two sections - Hypothyroidism and

Hyperthyroidism, although iodized salt is mentioned in Nodular or

Adenomatous Goiter.

In the general info about Hypothyroidism, it says " hypothyroidism

may arise from inadequate iodine consumption or from excessive

intake of goitrogenic substances. Deficiency of iodine in water and

food may induce simple enlargement of the thyroid... "

Here's what it says in Colloid (or Simple Goiter) under

Hypothyroidism:

" It is due usually to iodine deficiency. Although usually

asymptomatic, patients with the condition may rarely show signs of

thyroid hypofunction. "

a note here..in this 9th edition, goiter is seen as something apart

from Myxedema which is defined as a " lack of thyroid hormone in the

adult. "

It also says about simple goiter that " This disorder usually becomes

evident about puberty but may appear during pregnancy and tends to

regress if adequate iodine is supplied, with complete disappearance

by age 20-25. "

The " Treatment " for this is " ...Iodine therapy begun in the early

stages of simple goiter may produce excellent results, but may be

infective in the colloid stage, though still worthy of trial.

Iodine is most valuable as a prophylactic, and use of iodized salt

should be urged, especially in areas where the disease is endemic " .

The amount of iodine is referenced:

* Strong Iodine Solution U.S.P. (Lugol's) 30.0 cc

20 drops in water twice daily

* Potassium Iodide Solution N.F. 15.0 cc

5 drops daily in water

Iodine therapy is also mentioned in the section on Hyperthyroidism,

but not as a permanent remedy.

The treatment given for Myxedema and Chronic Thyroiditis is thyroid

extract.

Interestingly, in the section on Chronic Thyroiditis for those here

with Hashimoto's...it says " ADRENOCORTICAL and related therapy has

effectively reduced the inflammatory response and lessened the

amount of fibrous tissue in these patients " .
