Have you tried Iodoral or Lugol's or Kelp? It's kind of presumptuos to

think that when you take a multiple vitamin that it's the iodine causing

trouble. Even if it only has a few ingredients, you don't know it's the

iodine.

I don't take multiple vitamins because I've never liked their effect on me,

but I don't know why. When there's several different ingredients it's

impossible to pinpoint.

They used to say iodine deficiency could be prevented by a couple large

doses of iodine a year.

As for hot flashes, when people's thyroid starts to get better they do feel

warmer. It could simply be a sign the thyroid is kicking up a little. It's

not necessarily bad.

I think it may have to do with the hormonal effects of iodine.

I have actually decreased the amount of hormones I am taking--quite amazing.

In my case, it wasn't hot *flashes* or feeling warmer. I was HOT for a few

hours. I had to wear sleeveless shirts when others are wearing long shirts

& jackets. The hot was significant, but for me was secondary to other

reactions (e.g. throat stinging). The weather was cold enough so that I

could get comfortable. I don't see how I would be able to tolerate that

heat in 75 degree weather or warmer.

When I went off Lugol's, the stinging & heat went away within a week.

When I start again, I plan to fraction my dose. One of my doctors thinks

I'm allergic to iodine (autoimmune reaction). I don't necessarily believe

that. However, that explanation is consistent with other 'allergies' that

have kicked in with this autoimmune response (gluten & casseinate).

So your experience suggests that antibodies are not related to a reaction.

(because you don't have antibodies).

Did you have swelling in throat? Or feel anything in throat?

I had the heat for a while a few weeks before I started getting a stinging

in the throat & swelling. I didn't like the heat, but I liked feeling

more awake! So I didn't stop until the throat thing as the stinging worried

me the most. I too worried that the stinging wouldn't go away, but the literature

all said that all adverse reactions went away after a few days.

I've had the saliva testing for thyroid antibodies but it came back

as normal. I will ask my dr about doing the Iodine Loading Test at my

Dec 27th appt. I guess you wouldn't enjoy taking Iodoral while living

in the hot state of Texas....especially during the summers. lol

By swabbing, I assume you mean painting on the skin? I think for most

people painting iodine is pretty benign. However I remember one person on

the list a while back (don't remember who) saying they got symptoms from

painting. So you might want to start slowly if you decide to try it.

That may be because the hypothyroid body tries to preserve heat. It thinks

the brain should get heat first, and not sweating is a defense mechanism

that's not paricularly good for you. But, it used to be nice to never

sweat.

If sweating is the issue, unless it's unreasonable (and some things are only

temporary while your body adjusts), then that was a sign your health was

improving. Hypothyroidism is an often subtle, but quite damaging illness.
