First Fill... Some Encouragement Needed...

Hi all, I know it's been a long time since I last posted (or at least it

seems like it) but thought I'd drop a line.

I'm scheduled to go in for my first fill on March 1st and am a bit nervous.

Since I'm flying in to my old doc to do this, they're doing it under fluoro

to make it more " right on " rather than having to go back for adjustments.

But, I'm a bit nervous. I know people say it's not all that bad, but well,

what can I say - I'm a wimp when it comes to big protruding needles in my

chest...

Anyway - any encouragement you all might be able to provide me with or

anything to help quell my nervousness would be greatly appreciated.

Nick, this site is really more for events and related info.

The " regular " boards like Bandsters and SmartBandsters are better for

specific problems and questions about banding. Read some of the old

posts on the other sites about fills, (do a search on " first fills " )

and you'll find that probably 99% are effortless and problem-free.

However, remember that those who did have problems often post about

them, but few people continue to post " had fill today. easy and no

problem " time after time.

Especially if you have a sternal port, the needle only goes in about

3/4 of an inch total, and through only about 1/4 in of your tissue. -

much less than any injection. The needle is stainless steel and looks

big because it must be very sturdy, but only a very short part of it

goes in.

Feel free to ask the doc for a numbing medication, especially this

first time, so you'll have no discomfort other than the brief

stinging of the numbing med. Then, when you see what a big deal it is

NOT, then you may feel it's not worth the numbing med next time.

Hope this helps - Sandy, RN
