Hello Fellow Bandsters

My Gear:

APS 10cc band by Allergan

1.5cc tubing

I have 3.5 cc in the band since Tues. Have tolerated liquids just fine but am

still having a hard time getting anything else to go. unless it's really mushy.

I got cheerios down, wt control oatmeal down. Tuna salad and crackers got stuck.

We had stew for dinner, soft meat well chewed and mushy veggies gave me some

pangs but eventually seemed to pass. The question is how long should I wait

before an unfill. We are at 48hrs now.

Are you having any sinus drainage?

I had a problem w/ this right after my fill.

Thought I needed an unfill.

Did protein shakes  & liquids mostly until I got over the sinus stuff.

Now ... all better.

Several of those are NOT good things to judge by. Oatmeal is gummy.

Tuna salad is gummy and is easy not to chew up all the little pieces.

Veges are bad if they're at all stringy.

I find it harder to do soft things than hard, as it is so easy to

think they are already " soft enough " and not chew them nearly enough.

In 48 hours I sure wouldn't change anything.

There is stuff about tiis in the files, in the document called " How to help get

a good fill " .

raised a very good point, this time of year. (Thanks, ) allergies

are miserable, and the thick mucous can mess the stoma up badly. It can clog it

up entirely. Take an anti-histimine if needed, but they are very dehydrating, so

you'll need even more than the usual 80-100 oz a day of fluids.

This is what i teach re fills, and my doc agrees :

1. liquids should always go down fine. right after a fill, there might be a

slight back up, so we can do only 3-4 sips at a time, then a 5 second pause,

before more. gurgling is normal.

2. fluids only for the first 24 hrs

3. then soft food only for 24 hrs.

4, then, on the 3rd day, we should be able to tolerate regular foods, assuming

they are pea sized bites and chewed well.

As long as you can get plenty of fluids in so you do not get dehydrated -

meaning 80-100 oz a day - you can wait a few more days.

But no more than 5, imo. If you cannot tolerate solid foods by then, I feel you

need a small bit out. There are just too many serious problems with too-tight

fills to ignore them.

About that " weight control " oatmeal - I hate to tell you that it is only an

advertising gimmick. The only thing it has is a bit more calcium, which is now

known not to really help weight loss at all.

This type of instant oatmeal is pretty junky, sorry. the best oatmeal, imo, is

the steel-cut - much more fiber, real oatmeal, and much better for us. Instead

of all that sugar in the " weight cntrol stuff " , i use brown sugar " Sugar twin "

and it's great.

Better still is a fiber and protein cereal like Kashi go lean or Fiber One honey

clusters - much more protein, much more fiber.

It's always good to minimize the pokes, but it should help to know that the port

membranes have withstood hundreds of pokes in testing with no ill effects, as

long as the port is entered correctly with the special port-access needle

called a Huber needle. In an urgent situation, even the special needle is not

needed for a few pokes.

It's the bad misses that cause problems - going in at the very edge of the

membrane rather than the center, or missing the whole port entirely and going

thru the tubing.

Let us know how you are -

Seen them played w/them and the balloons :)

After I couldn't get down my beaters and salsa I gave and am now .15-.20

lighter. So far much better actually was able to get in 1/4 of a split ckn

breast w/ a few bites of cooked carrot last night had my cheerios and skim this

am. That is the only thing I can get down in the mornings. So we'll see how the

rest of the day goes. I can still feel the restriction but no discomfort. I'll

keep my fingers crossed! Would so love to pass the 40lb mark. Question for the

moderators. My BMI was 38 at the start, does it make sense that if you have a

lower bmi you don't need as much in your band. Seems likel most people have so

much more in their band than I do. After accounting for ther tubing I have less

tha 3.5cc in mine.

CJ, I'm really glad you got a small unfill. We should always be able to eat

small but nutritious meals -about 1-1.5 cups total. less than this and we cannot

meet nutrition needs, and the body is threatened and we do not lose well. plus

it is miserable! the band should NEVER cause pain and misery. We should be able

to forget it is even there most of the time.

Smaller people sometimes need MORE fill than others - but what someone looks

like on the outsied doesn't mtter - it is only their stomach size that matters,

and we cannot see that. some ver large people have small stomachs and need only

a small band. some very small people have larger stomachs and need a largr band.

it also doesn't matter a bit how much fill we actually have - or what anyone

else has. the only thing that matters is if you have a GOOD fill and can eat

wll. the less fill, the better - as lonjg as we are getting some hlp from the

band.

Cereal is a very good breakfast, but cheerios isn't the best. can you do some

real cooked oatmeal ? I love it with brown sugar " Sugar Twin' and a drizzle of

the sugar -free maple syrup that is oly 30 calories for 1/4 cup. the steel-cut

kind of oatmeal is best, full of fiber and some protein. even better is the

kashi go lean crunch, or the new fiber One honey clusters - both have GREAT

protein and lots of fiber. many people have trouble getting the 25 mg of fiber

we need daily (on average0 and these cereals are a great start.

sounds as if you're much better!

K I have some oats, I sweeten w/ splenda and fruit and skim mlk. I'll have to

try the other cereals.

So here's one, I tried the new TreeTop Trim jce (less cals added fiber blah

blah)

OMG it has given me the worst belly aches. I sure hope I can eat dinner tonite!

I only have about 750 cals in so far today. Wtg for pepcid ac and a little red

wine to help I hope!
