damage the pouch? There are times when I have taken a small sip

here and there and was wondering. I don't want to ever risk damaging

the pouch. Does drinking with meals stretch the pouch?

Just curious.

Thanks,

It doesn't stretch the pouch. It washes food through, enabling you to

eat more. A few tiny sips probably won't do much, but regular

drinking will wash it all through and keep you from getting full as

fast.

Drinking with meals liquifies the food in the pouch and washes it

through quickly. Also, since the pouch empties sooner, you are not

full until the next scheduled meal. Both of these mean you will be

taking in too many calories to lose well. The band cannot work if you

regularly drink with meals, or have a lot of soft or liquid foods.

If you drink right after your pouch is full, there is no room left

and you asy trigger a PB, or you may stretch the pouch or esophagus.

Both of these can cause serious problems. You can also stretch the

pouch by drinking carbonation, or drinking with expakdanble stuff in

the pouch, like breads abd bagels.

I met several people at the recent rito Bash who had done exactly

this - stretched their pouches out with drinking. They needed a

complete unfill, and a lengthy rest period. One needed a surgicsl re-

positioning of the band, since pouch dilations can effectively be the

same as slippage.

My recommendation is just not to do it! Your band's health should be

the most important thing to you, and just don't tempt fate. A small

sip " here and there " will usually not be a problem - but why risk

it? Sandy RN
