Guest guest
Yesterday, I followed Jack Kessler's advice and checked out Dr. Venturi's website:http://web.tiscali.it/iodio/. It was fascinating. As you might be able to guess from his name, he is from Italy. He is clearly a major researcher in the iodine field. He has papers on everything from cretinism, iodine in evolution, cancer (breast, thyroid, stomach), breast, and other iodine issues. I read one of his on evolution last night, and found myself underlining almost every sentence. So many new ideas. And he made me laugh. One of my favorite quotes: "Hypothyroidism might be considered like a sort of phylogenetical and metabolical regression to a former stage of 'reptilian life'. In fact, reptilian features seem to be restored in hypothyroid humans such as a dry, hairless, scaly, cold skin and a general slowdown of metabolism, digestion, heart rate, nervous reflexes with lethargic cerebration, hyperuricemia [excess uric acid in the blood, as in gout] and hypothermia." Another couple quotes from the same article: "In humans the total amount of iodine is about 30-50 mg and less than 30% is present in the thyroid gland and in its hormones. About 60-80% of total iodine is non-hormonal and it is concentrated in extrathyroidal tissues, but its biological role is still unknown. Recently we have hypothesized that iodide might have an ancestral antioxidant function in all iodide-concentrating cells from primitive Algae to more recent Vertebrates." "Thyroid hormones contain less than 1 mg of iodine and less than 1/30 - 1/50 of total iodine amount." Quotes from ENVIRONMENTAL IODINE DEFICIENCY: A CHALLENGE TO THE EVOLUTION OF TERRESTRIAL LIFE? Venturi, 2000. I have added links to many of his papers in Links > Iodine Information > Dr. Sebastiano Venturi. I also wrote him a brief email, acknowledging his contribution to the iodine field, and letting him know about our group. He has already responded. See below. Dr Venturi is clearly a person worth learning from.
