Guest guest
WOW, 2 cups of mac and cheese? Those were the days! hehehe I can somewhat remember what it tastes like, but it's so vague! hehehe Personally, I usually eat around set times. If I ate ONLY when I was hungry I'd eat at 11am and 7pm and nothing else and honestly I might only eat once a day because I am pretty much never hungry as long as I get my protein and water. I generally eat at 9am, 1 or 2 pm, and dinner by 7pm. Do what works for YOU though, but skipping meals is bad for metabolism. Sometimes being a loser is a GOOD thing! 5'11 " 306 / 226 / 180 PreOp / Now/ Goal Banded 09/14/06 @...: cindywebb1667@...: Wed, 24 Oct 2007 20:03:26 +0000Subject: What do you do when you are not Hungry? Here is a dilemma I never thought I'd have.....I know we are suppose to eat three meals a day, but what do you do when you just aren't hungry?I generally eat a late dinner when things calm down and I can focus on my food. My days run very later (2 am) so I tend to eat dinner around 8 or 9pmSeveral times I've been around my 'dinner' time and I just don't feel like eating. (Wow there's a switch). But I eat anyway because I'm afraid I'll get too hungry and overeat later. I do not have good restriction yet so I can eat a very large meal (ie last night I had 6 oz chicken 1/2 cup peas and 2 cups of macaroni and cheese and was not really full). Two days ago I went to IHOP and ate 3-eggs, all the hashbrowns, an english muffin with jelly, 1/2 corned beef hash and a 1/2 scoop of my granddaughter's ice cream sundae. I feel like I'm binging more and more and I'm afraid to eat for fear of not being able to stop.Anyway, should I eat at prescribed times whether hungry or not?I'm guessing my stomach/brain is getting used to alot less food (except at the above mentioned meals) and it just doesn't growl anymore.Or....I'm so afraid of binging (like I did above) that psycologically I'm making myself NOT hungry? _________________________________________________________________ Boo! One of the easiest ways to get messed up is to eat when you're distracted, doing other things, etc. First, you can get into grazing. Second, if you're not paying attention to every bite it is much easier to get stuck or to overeat. > Several times I've been around my 'dinner' time and I just don't feel > like eating. Well, remember don't eat as much as you can, eat as much as you should, whenever possible. That will be easier with good restriction, which will come with time. > Two days ago I went to IHOP and ate 3-eggs, all the > hashbrowns, an english muffin with jelly, 1/2 corned beef hash and a > 1/2 scoop of my granddaughter's ice cream sundae. Well, that's a bit over the top. Were you doing it because you were in ihop and it is a habit, because you were really hungry, because your granddaughter thought you should, or??? > I feel like I'm > binging more and more and I'm afraid to eat for fear of not being > able to stop. This may be a bit of " last supper syndrome " , which often happens just before banding....then particularly because you're going to be on liquids for a while after surgery. In your case it is probably because you're waiting for restriction and figure you might as well pig out while you can. Or something else? > Anyway, should I eat at prescribed times whether hungry or not? I don't think so. I know that I'm tight enough that I can rarely eat anything solid before 1100 or 1200, and we get up every day at 0500. > I'm guessing my stomach/brain is getting used to alot less food > (except at the above mentioned meals) and it just doesn't growl > anymore. You're making good progress, despite the " mistakes " above. I wouldn't consider them binges, just bad choices. > Or....I'm so afraid of binging (like I did above) that psycologically > I'm making myself NOT hungry? Only you can answer all the reasons (and there probably is more than one). But I'm sure not hung up on " sacred times to eat " and I've done pretty well. dan
Guest guest
i find that i just eat every 3 hours (about ) even if i am not hungry. it is either a meal or a snack..snacks being something like yogurt and fruit, cheese and fruit..that is some protein and something else. i find that this jsut works fo rme and if i do it, i dont get massively hungry in the evenings and overreat. skipping meals is just not a good idea imho. it takes planning (i carry food and protein drinks with me for emergencies)-- and being diabetic, albeit now pretty much under control, i get the shakes if i dont eat often enough. and for me it did cause binge eating...eat nothing during the day and everything in sight during the evening. so short answer, i eat anyway. Guest guest
Guess I'll try it both ways and see what works. I do know that I tend to eat whatever I've prepared or are served. I have NEVER left food on my plate (maybe that's what prompted me eat the other 1/2 of my granddaughter's sundae at IHOP). The times I've been successful in restaurants are the times I've ordered food that can be eaten as leftovers. I put 1/2 the meal in a to-go container right away and I take it to the car. Then I eat what I have on my plate. At IHOP, I knew the breakfast wouldn't be good as leftover so I told myself I wouldn't eat it all - yeah right. At home if I cook for two meals - I guarantee I'll eat both meals in one sitting (that's what happened with the chicken and mac and cheese). I am a night muncher - probably cause I'm up working so late in a quiet house. That's what I'll have to work on. BTW I remember Jack Paar's name and what he looks like but I'm more the ny Carson era (I was born in 1956). However, I too would eat an entire box of Kraft Mac and Cheese WITH something else like a sandwich or hot dogs. Mac and Cheese is my FAVORITE. My daughter bought it for me to make for my grandkids (who now don't like it) and by golly I eat it everyday. I know now I CANNOT have favorite foods in the house. If its there I eat it. I'm not due for a fill till January, but I don't think I'll wait that long....I have no trouble eating pasta, bread or anything. As a matter of fact, this morning I ate a Slim Fast caramel bar for breakfast and accidentally swallowed a HUGE WAD of caramel. I sat there waiting for the stuck feeling and wondering if I would have to throw up to get rid of it and.....nothing. It went down just fine ??? > > > WOW, 2 cups of mac and cheese? If its there I >eat it. one approach is to try to change the favorites...its lame, i know, but i play it sometimes. i love salads. yes, i do, so i always have wonderful salad fixings in the house. i also love spinach, so ikeep the green giant frozen spinach available -- you pop it in the microwave. i then put cheese or molly mcbutter and some spices and nuts. >I'm not due for a fill till January, but I don't think I'll wait that >long....I have no trouble eating pasta, bread or anything. And of course don't " taste it " until it is half gone either. > I am a night muncher - probably cause I'm up working so late in a > quiet house. That's what I'll have to work on. How about doing some exercise at night. Even stuff you can do while sitting at a desk or tv is good. Get some exercise bands of various sizes and types. Very cheap. Do something that you can't have dirty hands for. Computer. Needlework. Knitting. You wouldn't want any food to contaminate your work, so you won't be as tempted to have it around for grazing. > BTW I remember Jack Paar's name and what he looks like but I'm more > the ny Carson era (I was born in 1956). If you have some boxes around the house, take them, and any other " bad stuff " and take them to a women's shelter, a mission, your church, a food pantry, or somewhere else it will be put to good use, since putting it on your butt is not a good use. > I know now I CANNOT have favorite foods in the house. Guest guest
Diane, I love your advice! For a short period of my childhood, my babysitter made me clean my plate. My parents never did. I too use small plates to eat. Isn't it amazing how we feel like we are getting so much when we fill a small plate? Unfortunately, I have to have things in my house for my 3 granddaughters who live next door. Mostly it is things like 100 calorie pack snacks, cereal, jello, peaches etc, but every so often it is also dorritos, pringles and cookies. OMG I LOVE goldfish. I too live alone so I tend to buy single serving stuff, but if I have more than one single serving of anything I'm tempted to eat it. I too eat sugar free fudgicles. I have to practice on making them last or I can eat 4 at a time! My biggest problem is binging. I can usually stay away from unhealthy food...but when I don't.....look out...it is ALL GONE : ) I like cucumbers mostly but they give me horrid reflux if I eat too many. I don't really like salad unless it is from a restaurant with loads of fat laden creamy garlic dressing Although an MCD cheeseburger hurts going down - I can't resist trying. I've NEVER thrown up although at times I'll have a little burp under the last thing I've swallowed. But I'm not easily deterred if I really want to eat something. I can eat bread but get stuck on toast and butter ??? Now that's weird huh? Right now I " m working on scaring myself that if I keep cheating I'll stretch my pouch and have to go back for surgery. Now THAT SCARES ME! Oh and G*d forbid I keep ice cream in the house....that is a big NO NO cause I will definitely eat it! My mom loves frozen grapes...I'll have to try them. Well, all your advice is very good and justifies some of my good behaviors. Sometimes I think I need more fill and other times I'm afraid to chance it. I just lost another 3 pounds so I'm guessing something is working despite the MCD, IHOP and double dinner - I've only cheated those 3 times in the past month so I guess that's o.k. > > > >RE: > >I do know that I tend to eat whatever I've prepared or are served. Guest guest
Hello all! Haven't contributed in a while but this post intrigued me. I'm an ice cream junkie. Plain & Simple. I had a great start with my band and lost only 4 pounds since April. Why? I was on the ice cream diet. I finally had the courage to go to my DR and confess and squeezed (which sometimes snaps you back to reality) and after scolding myself for straying, I decided to get back to healthy eating habits. BUT, what to do about my ice cream addiction? I was torn between eat it or obsess about it. I chose to do something else. I took my favorite vanilla yogurt. Activia to be exact (it's yummy) and tossed it into the freezer. It froze solid, not like wha you can buy in the markets. And I have got to tell ya! Boy was it delicious, but the beautiful thing about it is, it was so hard to scoop out, (I used a plastic kiddie spoon) it took forever and was unbelievably satisfying. That one 4oz yogurt was so much hard work I just couldn't eat another, which of course is no problem for me, banded or not! Another little yummy meal for me is the Greek strained yogurt " Fage " 0% or 2%. You'll never believe its low fat. It's so filling and to curb a sweet craving, you can throw in a little honey (that's the way we eat it in Greece) or cut up fruit. I use it in place of mayo too. Its a great flavorful substitute. But to actually say something about what to do if you're not hungry. What I think I finally understand is that somedays I can eat and somedays I can't. Somedays I can barely drink water and others I can gulps gallons. I think that's the hardest thing to figure out. When can you and when can't you. I don't know, just try to be aware of the signals. And listen to your gut not your head. You're head probably still thinks fat, but your gut isn't anymore. ~Irene NYU - 4/17/06 242/175/
Guest guest
I have the same issue with portions. What I do is buy the small portion packages BUT leave them locked in my shed outside. Easy to unload from my car but a bit of pain to get to once I'm comfortable. No combo lock, I need a key and don't have them close together. It takes some work to actually get to the goodies. I only allow myself 1 at a time, a lot of restraint is required on my part. At times, I forgo the snack because I just don't feel like getting it. I sometimes leave things at a friends house and have her give small portions at a time. That helps too.

The first thing I taught my kids is " differential behavior " , that you behave differently at grandmas from home, from school, from church, from the playground, from the sports team practice, etc. Part of that includes food. Just because they have chips at home doesn't mean they have to (or should) have them at your house. That does NOT make you a " mean grandma " . I'll bet there are some other things that are different between their house and yours. This could be another one. -- Best regards, Dan mailto:honu@... There are some REALLY good low fat dressings. I've found a Ranch Dressing that is low fat, almost no calories, and I can't tell it from " the good stuff " . I'll bet you couldn't either. I don't know (or care) what is in it but it does the job. -- Best regards, Dan mailto:honu@...

And you should remember " just because you can doesn't mean you should " . We've all done occasional " bad things " (well, I know a couple who may be perfect, but I'm not one of them). As to the bread vs toast, you can't always " make sense " out of these things. And really THINK about it. I should have done so last night. We were at an event and the food was superb gyros. I had a couple bites of the pita bread and it was outstanding. So I ate all the pita bread, as well as the meat and veggies and cheese. DUMB. It didn't quite get stuck, as I ate the whole thing pretty slowly. However, it really was " plugged up " as I was sneezing (one of the clues for me that I've overdone it, or am about to) and just after the last bite (yeah, I cleaned my plate) I started to hurt a bit. Needless to say, I was stretched or sort of plugged up. How do I know? I could barely get any water down a couple hours later. This morning I can barely get hot coffee down. I know it will pass, but I probably won't even try to have anything solid the rest of the day. Yeah, DUMB..... But I'm sure you can be smarter than me. -- Best regards, Dan mailto:honu@... That's one of the toughest things. There are LOTS of times when things " just don't make sense " . One day I can eat something, another day I can't, even if under conditions that are identical as far as I can tell. And I'm not even a woman who has the extra variations in " time of month " and all that. I do know that one big variable for me is salt, and even worse, MSG. That bloats me up a great deal. I can barely bend my fingers my hands are so swollen with fluid. It also makes my stomach swell and tightens me up tremendously. And not being able to get a lot of fluid down when you're overloaded with sodium isn't a good thing. So I try VERY hard to watch out for that stuff. YMMV, of course. -- Best regards, Dan mailto:honu@...
Guest guest
again, me with the games. i LOVE gyros. i order them, but remove the bread. and i take one bite of the bread...to feel how doughy it is and remember how i HATE to vomit....so i stop. so far its working. thanks for telling me though that even if it appears to go down ok, there could be later ramifications. that just adds fuel to my thinking. Guest guest
What can I do? My girls are 3 and 6 and do not have weight issues (as yet) as I did from a very early age. I dont give them a lot of junk but there has to be something in the house. Even crackers, fat free etc are my downfall. Stick a bit of cheese and pickled onion on top and thats my 10pm snack in front of tv. They have friends over for play dates and straight after school, fruit will not cut it. I try to teach them healthy eating and most days they have very little that is not healthy but they are children. I confess to finding some fruit mince sweet biscuits in the cupboard tonight and dipping 4 into my coffee. Felt guilty as hell afterwards though. Is there anyone else who has young kids and faces my problems.
Guest guest
I have never PB'd (if that means vomit) but I have had a couple of cases of what I call " backwash " where the food gets temporarily stuck and I try to burp and I feel the food in the bottom of my throat. I'm a very lucky person when it comes to vomiting. Even when I have the FLU I can usually keep from vomiting. I think I was in the 30's last time I vomited (21 years ago). When I cheat and then lose weight I tell myself that the " cheat " hasn't caught up with me yet...which is really true. I usually don't 'gain' till a day or so after the " cheat " . So....to keep the gain down - I try to be really, really good to make up for it. The cheat and then weight loss actually helps me from cheating again - kinda like waiting for something bad to happen. I do weigh EVERYDAY - once a day - I find that the 'gains' motivate me to do better and the losses make me feel GOOD! > > > > > >Well, all your advice is very good and justifies some of my good > >behaviors. Guest guest
interesting approach! we all have different ways of coping with this..one size never fits all!!! what you are really doing is balancing..i prefer to use that term rather than cheating and making up for it!!! you see how i try to trick myself???? Guest guest
OUCH - Gyros and Pita sounds like it would hurt. My cheats are getting less and my good behavior and choices are getting better. I'm just a person that has to " push the envelope " once in awhile - then I scare myself and I'm good. I tried an MCD cmall cheeseburger yesterday and could only eat 1/3 of it (with pain of course). As I sat in my car alone (unjudged) I looked at myself in the rear view mirror and said, " how stupid can you be? Why are you eating something that isn't all that tasty and letting it hurt you? Literally? " So I got out of the car and threw it away. So yes...I " m as dumb as they come...... > > > Although an MCD cheeseburger hurts going down - I can't resist > > trying.
