The AdvantEDGE are about a hundred calories, the kirkland about two hundred. In both cases they have about ten grams of protein per can/box. If you're on liquids they'll do fine. After you're on full liquids, a fe days after surgery, you will not need protein drinks. At that point, you'll be able to puree and thin almost any food so you can get it through a straw. No need at all for protein drinks after that - except possibly much later, in the rare case that your fill is too tight for solids in thr mornings. Guest guest Posted December 21, 2004 Report Share Posted December 21, 2004 I don't use them often anymore since I am two years out but when I do, I use the PRO-RATED " Alpine Vanilla " brand that COSTCO sells for about $20 AIR. There are 90 1 ounce servings per container, a one ounce scoop is included. The label says that one ounce serving has: 120 calories 1.5 grams total fat 4 grams total carbohydrates 2 grams sugars as part of the carbs 22 grams of protein. They suggest mixing one scoop with 5-7 ounces of water or skim milk. I find mixing with water gives a rather tasteless fluid, skim milk is better. One bandster I know uses a beater to beat in canned peaches...mmmm good! I used to drink a lot of Kirkland (COSTCO brand) bottles water. I saved the small bottle 0.5 liter?) which I would then use for my own mixed up Crystal Lite. I also will use those washed and dried bottles by filling them with one or two servings of the powder. I then add skim milk to fill up and shake well. It's best to put the fluid in maybe hald full first to shake up well then add rest of milk. I made a powder funnel by cutting the taper top end off a bottle and then holding the mouth of that bottle against the top of the bottle to be filled. I just realized that likely I was putting too much powder in the bottles and getting too much protein in one serving. I need to start just putting pone scoop in a bottle and then only filling it half full of fluid. Alternately start getting the 8 ounce bottles like Jessie gives patients after a fill. Thinking further about this, Walmart has small cans of their GREAT VALUE brand evaporated milk for about 35 cents. These 5 ounce cans aren't available as " Fat free evaporated milk " so that can has 200 calories of fate, 400 total calories and 10 grams of protein. If you had a safe place to keep the milk (cool) you could use half a can to mix with water and the protein powder. Walmart's Great Value fat free evaporated milk does come in 12 ounce cans. A one ounce serving has 25 calories derived from 4 grams sugar as a carbohydrate and two grams of protein. 3 ounces of the milk plus water plus protein powder ought to work well enough. So far as storing the opened can goes, in older times people would puncture a couple holes in one end of a can of evaporated milk and then use it as a creamer for coffee and tea. They'd block the holes with wooden match sticks when not in use. A can might stay ok for a week or more. Anyway, the COSTCO brand works for me. Flax seed oil contains Omega-3 EFAs that are touted as having various health benefits including helping the body shed toxins. Since toxins are stored in fat and you are breaking down fat, your body is having to dispose of more toxins, and maybe could use some help in that. I also drink cran-water (1 tbsp unsweetened cranberry juice in 8 ounces water) and water with lemon to help in de toxifying. You mix it with water and it mixes up very nicely. It has 23 grams of protein per 8 ounces (1 scoop) and it is sweetened with Splenda, so I doubt too much sugar, if any. Right now I am having Kiwi Strawberry, and it is good, a little on the sweet side though - from the splenda. I am 8 days out and sticking to liquids until Jan 3rd, when I can introduce mushy food. I never thought about the body detoxifing it self but that is true.. I would like to shed the fat and the toxins all at the sametime. No reason why they two can't go away togther. Guest guest Posted July 4, 2006 Report Share Posted July 4, 2006 My acupuncturist turned me onto the Metagenics line of powdered supplements. I use "Ultra Inflam X". It lists a serving as having 15 grams of protein. They use rice protein concentrate instead of soy. It is all vegetarian. They have a web site at www.metagenics.com .  If you look in the supplement section of Whole Foods or Wild Oats or whatever you have near you, you will find dozens of powder drinks. Bring your reading glasses! (I am not sure about whey though). They recommend smoothies instead. Throw some milk, cream or coconutmilk into a blender with stuff like egg yolks, fruit and what not. I don't make smoothies so I don't have a good recipe for you. Sorry. But you get the idea. I use kefir I make from raw milk and I put two raw eggs, 2 tablespoons of coconut oil (you can use coconut milk as well) with some stevia, blend it all up and drink. Guest guest Posted July 4, 2006 Report Share Posted July 4, 2006 I use Isopure, which is a whey protein isolate and it has a lot of protein, one serving is 50 grams of protein. I usually use half a serving thrown in my shake/smoothie. I haven't had any problems with it, was just concerned when I read about the MSG. It doesn't say that it contains MSG anywhere on the label, but neither does a lot of stuff that you buy, it's labeled with all kinds of alternate names. I looked online but couldn't find much else except soy or whey powders. I have to be careful as I can't use anything with sugar in it. Some of them have lots of sugar added. I guess for now I'll stick with the Isopure. (I'm such a wuss I don't think I could bring myself to eat raw eggs.)  It does come in several flavors and only has 1 gram of sugar. I've been able to find it online for 1/2 the price that the health food store charges.  LinnOn Jul 4, 2006, at 10:02 AM, Ives wrote:I'll look into that one. I did go to my HFS and read every single one of them. Can't remember the brand at the moment, but it can work well for people sensitive to soy or whey, or who are otherwise concerned about soy. I bought a can a few years ago and used it, but somehow didn't care for it enough to repurchase. A little soy doesn't bother me personally, despite that I Rast test somewhat sensitive to it. I use the Spirutein protein powders up to 2-3x a week. As a thyroid patient, I'm already well medicated so don't worry about soy depressing the thryoid. For me, it's been the best protein powder, a fave of mine for about 15-20 yrs now. I always go back to it. Again, Vitamin Shoppe's clone didn't even come close for me, despite the ingredients list. I tried several whey protein powders. Despite the massive amount of glowing literature in the nutrition and bodybuilding mags, the whey products just flattened me. I felt nervous and strung out (unusual) after eating them. The flavored ones also seemed excessively sweet. But these days most protein powders don't get along with me, nor do eggs. Raw liver I can't quite handle in a smoothie! So I've been experimenting with the " Japanese diet " . I take a whole small fish, which are sold individually frozen and often deboned to boot, at the Asian stores. Plop the whole frozen small fish in the toaster oven, with maybe a cup of rice if I feel like it, and set the timer for 20 minutes or so, let it cook while I'm cleaning up the kitchen etc. When the fish is done the skin is crisply and nice. Then I have a bowl of rice with fish, kimchi, seaweed, and chili sauce while I wake up in the AM. What has been amazing to me is how much *energy* I've been having during the day as a result! It sets wonderfully as a breakfast, and is less work than my previous AM meals. Also it doesn't make me crazy-hungry later (which plain rice would). Anyway, when I was in college I'd eat fish because it has a protein that makes your brain more alert. I eat the small fish, because the big ones tend to horde the mercury, plus they don't have so much fish oil (the Asian favorites of yellow croaker and sablefish are very high in oil). This methodology doesn't take much time at all in the AM, and cleanup is easy.
