> My name is , and I am a Starbucks addict.

My doctor got on my case at my fill

appointment last week because I typically get three

Starbucks a week - normally a " light "

frappuccino (either mocha or caramel). They are low

in fat and calories but have about 35

carbs. He is a big carb watcher. Does anyone have a

low carb suggestion? I've tried the

Sugar Free Vanilla Latte w/ skim milk but to me, it

had no flavor. Any advice?? When I get

Starbucks, it replaces breakfast for me that day.

--- I can see why your doctor fussed at you ... He is trying to help

you resume weight loss. He was trying to figure out the easiest way to get

you to cut back on calories.

50 pounds lost is not nothing, but I wondering if you have stalled or just

lost slowly? I'm not trying to fuss at you --- just looking at it this way

---->> if you have to cut out calories, then fat and sugar are ALWAYS the

first to go because they aren't necessary.

If you really want to keep those lattes coming, could you get a smaller one?

Switch to twice a week? What do you think you might be able to work

out?

, It would be good if you could minimize the coffeee, because

it is a gastic irritant. but a cup or so a day is ok for most people -

as long as they are happy with their weight loss and having no

stomach burning. The more fill you have, the more stress on the

stomach and the better an idea it is to minimize irritants.

I'm not a proponent of low-carb diets, especially with attempting

weight loss. We need about 50-55% of our diet from the good carbs -

veggies, dairy, fruit, cereal grains. IMO, your lowfat and low

calorie drink is just fine. the few carbs that are in it are DAIRY

and are helping to meet your 1200 mg a day need of calcium. You need

2 servings of nonfat or lowfat dairy every day to do this, unless

you're using the chewable calcium supplenets (which also have carbs

in them).

IMO, it's not a great idea to use them for breakfast, though. They

are exactly the kind of liquid calories we need to mostly avoid, they

have almost no nutrition, and they do not make the band work for you -

only solid meals do that. When you drink a meal instead of eating

solid foods, the liquid runs right through the band and does not keep

you full, so you're tempted to snack. Liquids also do not bump up the

metabolism for several hours like a solid meal does - and this alone

reults in much less weight loss (ie calories burned) over time.

I'd suggest having a good fiber cerel for breakfast everey day, then

getting the Starbuck's later if you want it. Most people are very

deficient in the daily fiber they need, unless they have a good

cereal every day. And filling up with fiber is really impt for good

weight loss. My thoughts! Sandy R

I will be interested to see what feedback you get on this. I have never been

one for

artificial sweeteners. I think real sugar in moderation is much healthier. I'm

sure you

already know the standard bandster answer is going to be that you need to be

eating solid

foods at each meal (or every 3-4 hours) or you're not using the band to it's

full potential. I

have a smoothie for b'fast each morning and have done so for years. I don't

plan on

changing that part of my life and don't see how it would help me all that much

to do so.

Even though it goes straight through the band, it fills me up and keeps me full

until

lunchtime. It's healthy and high protein as well. I am not in a position to

disagree with an

MD or experienced band RN or anyone who's been successful with their band for

that

matter, BUT..... I just don't see the big deal about you substituting that

beverage for your

b'fast 3 times per week. hmmmm. Maybe you could add some fat and decrease the

sugar????

Sandy,

Thank you for your input about the low carb thing - I often wondered why my doc

focuses so much on low carb when other doctors don't. You mention stomach

burning with the coffee - coffee has never bothered me. I have never had any

heartburn or anything along those lines.

For the past 8-10 months of banding I have a very difficult time eating in the

morning. The days I do eat breakfast, it's normally a South Beach diet breakfast

bar. On the weekends I sometimes eat eggs with ham and cheese in them. I eat

breakfast at work so cereal would be tough to do! Can you name some high fiber

cereals that actually taste like something?? I will give it a try. I just bought

some South Beach cereal the other day (haven't tried it yet) but I didn't look

at the fiber count. Also, I drink about 6oz of skim milk every night (sometimes

with a scoop of low carb ice cream - Breyer's is really good!).

Another friend suggested that I ask the manager at my Starbucks about other low

carb flavored syrups. Some Starbucks are beginning to offer a wider range of

them.

Thanks again,

Any Kashi cereal is good for fiber, good carbs and protein. I drink a non

fat latte (one ounce of espresso) with about 6oz of steamed skim milk with

sugar free flavored syrups (less than a tsp.) Torani is the brand of the

syrups that Starbucks and other coffee specialty shops use and is available

at any speciality warehouse store (Cost Plus Smart and Final). I also have

had no problem with stomach pains after drinking one latte in the morning

since my LapBand surgery. (so far)

I think carbs are no big deal as long as you eat COMPLEX carbs and that you

combine them

with protein and fat, right? Someone mentioned Kashi and it is TERRIFIC. Good

Friends is

my favorite, but Go Lean Crunch is pretty good too.

I also have a smmothy with prtine in them most mornings. I don't drink coffee

just tea. I use the equal but I am not happy with that because of the health

risks with that. I have difficulty eating chicken though. I can eat beef fine. I

find I eat much less and less often but because I have not been doing hte

exercising I have not been loosing the weight like I should. I am going to get a

trainer to get me going. I feel discouraged because I am not loosing like before

I got the band and lost 50 on my own. Connie6661@...

Theresa's comments remind me of that book " French Women Don't Get Fat " . VERY

good

book and NOT a diet book!

Maybe, if you weigh once a wk, and you have lost, use it as a reward for a

success. It will taste even better then!

I've pretty much stopped responding on the various lists, but your

comment hit one of my pet peeves: doctor's who do bariatric surgery

and still practice the old diet=weight-loss ways.

We're BANDED, dammit. We don't need any cut this, have lots of that

rules. We need to eat so the band works. Beyond that, it is an

individual thing.

I'm one of the folks who is very tight in the morning. My first " meal "

is a Starbucks skim-milk latte, with Splenda. That gives me some

protein, some coffee, and gets me going. A few hours later I eat a cup

of dry crunchy cereal (slowly). Usually something like Kashi Go-Lean

or Cheerios. Lunch is real food (tuna or chili are my favorites, but

any band-friendly food will do). Snack is cottage cheese on a cracker

(or two) and dinner is solid protein and a veggie. I need extra

lubrication with solid foods, so I tend to make things like mashed

squash and use it like katsup.

Calorie counts? carbs? who knows. Better yet, who cares. Weight loss

was steady (now at goal) and >100 lbs.

Come on Steve, tell us how you really feel. LOL! I agree completely. I

don't count calories, fats, carbs, etc. I just follow the bandster way

of eating as reccomended in my Inamed booklet. In 3 years I've lost

116 lbs, but I did take have to take 9 months off with NO fill for

pregnancy. Your choice of meals mirrors mine. I have found that tuna

and cottage cheese are the 2 foods that keep me full the longest. I

can eat tuna mixed with a little light mayo & a kosher dill pickle at

noon and I don't want anything else until dinner 6:00-7:00 p.m. I cut

the pickle into thick slices and flop the tuna on it instead of using

a cracker. (Started doing that while pregnant.) As we get closer to

summer and the produce comes in, I eat cottage cheese over a fresh

tomato or over a fresh peach if I want something sweet. Keeps me full

for about 6 hours.

Isn't that funny? tuna and cottage cheese also are what keep me full

very well - I bet it is the protein in them that's the main reason,

plus easy to eat so we might be able to get just a bit more in. Sandy

Try using a french fry cutter (lots of little S turns in the blade).

The tuna won't slide off so easily.

I also put tuna on those Stacker pickles (designed for burgers and
