Guest guest
My doc told me that Cranberry (don't know about pineapple) is good for infections because it is acidic (I know pineapple is as well, but not sure how it metabolizes out), but not to take it for stones because it makes your system more acid, which is what is causing them in the first place. that's why the lemon juice is what was prescribed for me- to eliminate the CAUSE of the stones instead of just the stones as it metabolizes into an alkaline. He feels the cause of stones is probably related to my body leaching because of actually being too acidic. On this train of thought cranberry (at least) is contraindicated. The harder I try, the confuseder I get! Somehow I feel all this is linked together (thyroid and iodine issues and the other health " stuff " I have going on, etc). The trick is figuring out how without a PhD... E (Ellen in Missouri) > > I know this is OT, so will try to keep it short - I have a condition known as Medullary Sponge Kidney, which means the tubes inside the kidney, instead of being very tiny with fast flowing liquid, they are quite large, with slower flowing, which encourages crystal growth, which in turn leads to kidney stones. We have found that fresh pineapple juice has enzymes in it which can dissolve the kidney stones; cranberry juice, also freshly juiced (honey added for palatability, lol, otherwise it is just too too too sour) also has those great enzymes in it for dissolving the K.S.'s. We have a Green Star juicer, which is an excellent machine; a real workhorse. I try to also drink LOTS of water and also use Redmond's salt; we no longer use table salt (pure poison, that). We are finding ways of dealing with my K.S.'s - A friend just had a 3 INCH kidney stone! He said that pain was quite horrible. My stone was only a bit over 1/4 " and the pain was horrendous! So watch the > acidity/alkalinity, but try to get fresh (not frozen - not as effective) cranberry & pineapple juices if you have trouble with K.S.'s. > > C. >
Guest guest
From what I've read, it is not the ph of cranberry that helps with UTI's, but there is a constituent in it (I've forgotten the name) that is also in blueberries, that prohibits the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. Guest guest
, Health food stores sell no-sugar-added 100% cranberry juice. Trader Joes does too, if you have one in your area, it is much cheaper. Or you can get cranberry supplements - there are lots of those. Take care, Sharon > I've always wondered about how to get the great stuff from cranberries > without the sugar. Anyone have any ideas? Guest guest
You can buy unsweetened cranberry juice at a health food store. Be forwarned thought, it is VERY tart. Or you can take cranberry pills, I use and prefer CranActin brand. 2 pills a day keeps the UTI's away! Guest guest
Look into d-mannose. It is a very concentrated form of the stuff in cranberries that helps UTIs. You can buy it in capsules or powder form. I haven't tried it myself but have heard it works great and a lot better than just plain cranberries, juice, or capsules. Guest guest
Oh yes, I had forgotten! I started to get the early twinges of a UTI 2 weeks ago, and was out of cranberry caps. I had some D-Mannose (tbs in water), chugged down a bunch of water, took homeopathic Cantharis, and no UTI developed. Guest guest
I've heard of cantharis but am not familiar with what is it supposed to do for UTIs. Does it help get rid of the infection or is it more for helping the irritation felt from it? Shelli Re: Re: )T-Kidney Stones Oh yes, I had forgotten! Guest guest
Cranberries are natrurally high in carbs. But they are sour so people tend to add lots of sugar. But adding sugar is not necessary. It takes a bit of getting used to, but fresh or frozen cranberries can be put in a blender with water and then drunked. Tart but doable. Guest guest
Shelli, Cantharis for UTI's is a homeopathic remedy, used according to the laws of Hahnemann. Homeopathy is an energy medicine, and it stimulates your own body to heal itself. Guest guest
I buy cranberry concentrate at the health food store and add Stevia and sparkling water to it! It's very tasty. Judi
Guest guest
We juice cranberries in our Green Star juicer and add raw honey or maple syrup to make it palatable. There are two things that are important in cranberries - it has enzymes that deal with kidney stones/stone formation, and the properties that help with UTI's. DH buys fresh cranberries and juices them just for me, as I am the one that forms stones due to my genetic kidney problems. I also drink fresh pineapple juice - it has enzymes that will dissolve kidney stones, lemonade made with fresh lemons and raw honey is another good one. You don't need to use table sugar, just add raw honey to taste; raw honey has good properties in it also, besides sweetening power! DH is a juicer (mostly green green green stuff that taste pretty awful) but he has read a ton of research on the properties of the juices, as in enzymes, micro nutrients, etc., so when he tells me that a certain juice will help my kidney problems, I believe him, because he HAS done the research.
