Thanks, Sharon. I had forgotten that iodine deficiency can result in low stomach acid.

This website is by Flechas, one of the people working with Abraham and Brownstein, as well as the person who runs the lab for the iodine loading test. He has a nice article on clinical issues that I've just added to the Clinical Pearls section.

Orthoiodosupplementation in a Primary Care Practice By Flechas. Doses for different situations. "The nutritional status of the patient will determine its response to orthoiodosupplementation. It is crucial that the thyroid gland has plenty of antioxidants in its cells and many other nutrients. We have found that giving a multivitamin for women with PMS (Optiviteâ ) improves the response to orthoiodosupplementation....We often see patients’ breast pain disappear in a 1 to 30 days at a dose of 50 mg. At lower doses, the pain persisted for a much longer time....Once FBD is gone, a patient may opt to drop iodine intake to 12.5 to 25 mg per day. There is a chance that the cysts will return....To this date these patients continue to have excellent control of their Type II diabetes. The range of daily iodine intake was from 50 mg to 100 mg per day. All diabetic patients were able to lower the total amount of medications necessary to control their diabetes....Once she started on iodine for FDB we noticed that her GI bleeding stopped and the varicose veins of her stomach and esophagus disappeared....Patients have noticed a loss of weight. One patient after taking four pills of iodine lost eight pounds of fluid weight in 24 hours. We have had patients note better bowel function. Patients who have been constipated for over ten years have now noted daily bowel movements. We have also had patients noted relief from leg cramps at night. In less than 1% of all the patients treated with I, have we seen an allergic reaction. More often than not, the allergic reaction is hives. After treating over 1,000 patients with iodine, I have at no time seen the Wolff-Chaikoff Effect." http://www.optimox.com/pics/Iodine/IOD-10/IOD_10.htm

Re: interesting painting experience

Very interesting, Elaine. I recall reading that iodine was necessary for the production of stomach acid which I believe fits with your experience. Unfortunately I cannot recall where I read that, but I did a quick search and found this from a doctor's website, "Iodine can also be concentrated in the stomach tissue, and the lack of iodine in the stomach manifests as achlorhydria (lack of digestive acid production). Iodine is used by the stomach cells, also known as parietal cells, to concentrate chloride which is necessary to produce hydrochloric acid (digestive acid). With the prolonged presence of achlorhydria, there is a much higher incidence of stomach cancer." http://www.helpmythyroid.com/iodine.htmHe sounds like a good doctor to investigate for anyone in the NC area.
