How long was it from fill to food? Everytime I've gotten a fill I have

been " strongly advised " to stay on liquids for 24-48 hours to give

myself a chance to heal. 72 hours if possible. Don't forget, a fill

DOES irritate the stomach.

Sorry you had trouble! Most band eating trouble comes from poor

chewing, and not starting with a pea-sized bite. Things rarely get

STUCK IN the stoma, but they easily scratch and irritate the stoma on

the way through, and that causes swelling that makes it hard to

swallow for a couple days.

When this happens, go back to fluyids only for a meal or two, to give

the stoma a rest and chance to heal. Eat and drink nothginbg at all

for a couple hours, to let the food get thropugh. It's never an

emergency, unless you are vomitting continual;l;y and violently, then

you must go to the ER after contacting your doc. Some trul;y STUCK

pieces of things have had to be removed by urgent endoscopy.

I

m afraid There is no evidence at all that papaya works - none of the

docs believe it does, and there is really no way it can, since the

enzyme takes hours to work even on fresh meat. This rumour has been

around for a long time, and it not based in fact. Papaya also can be

very harmful, and I know several people who got a bad gastritis after

using it. After all, your stomach tissue is MEAT too! So I sure don't

advise it. I think that what worked for you is simply TIME. It's wise

never to eat or drink ANYthing soon after a " stuck " episode - adding

anytghing else to a hurting and/or swollen stoma will only make

things worse.

You clearly DO have some restriction if yoiu goyt " stuck " . It's

impossible to get " stuck " without any restriction, even if it's not

much. Good luck figuring out what is going on.

Why do you feel you have a leak? (Sorry if you've exp[lained before -

I've been away for a month). It's common to have 0.5 cc or so in the

small bands " unaccounted for " since all the fluid cannot be withdrawn

without creating a harmful suction.

my band the last time I was there about 2 weeks ago I should have had

3.5cc he said I might have a leak. He put 1.5cc back in and I go back

in one week to see how it is. Well the funny thing is I feel a small

restriction with this fill not able to eat as much and staying

fuller. So maybe I don't have a leak that would be good. So I cooked

dinner for the family ribs and all the fixings. I didn't eat all

morning cause I was cooking and busy. So we are plating the ribs and

food and putting it on the table. My DD grabbed a bite of rib that

was on the pan to see how they turned out and I grabbed one also.

Well I guess I didn't chew it up good. Now I am stuck big time. I

have never had this before, have only PB a few time and what ever was

stuck came up. This time it will not. I could not and can not eat a

bite. We sat at the table and I put two teaspoons of food on my plate

and could not eat them had to go to PB and still stuck. Couldn't

really get much water down. Went to bed and was able to sleep at

least. But I am still stuck this morning. I went to the health store

and got some papaya Enzyme hopefully that will work. I can't believe

after not having any restriction that I got so stuck. Wow now I know

what to tight is for sure.

Thanks Sandi,

I don't know if it was time or the Papaya but it had been almost 24 hours

and nothing was budging and then when I took the papaya in less than an hour

everything was fine. I am just glad its gone.

I do feel I have some restriction now just need a little more.

I have had about 6 fills every time I went the Dr check to see if the

previous fill was still there and it always was. The Dr had filled me from 3cc

when he checked it was there and he fill to 3.5cc. When I went home I really

felt less restriction than before the fill. The next time I went back when he

checked there was nothing in the band at all he could get no fluid out. He said

no wonder you don't feel any restriction you may have a leak. He then put 1.5cc

back in the band. That was April 26. Since I have been home I do feel some

restriction and it has stayed so I don't really think I have a leak but where

that 3.5cc went who knows. Ever heard of that happening to anyone or am I really

just the lucky one lol. I go back May 21 to be checked.

In my case, if I ever get anything stuck, it irritates my stoma. Even

though the food comes up or goes through, I am left with a sore

stoma. The papaya has always helped me out. knock on wood. Hot tea,

as much as I can drink, and most importantly, go back to liquids,

then mushies and then solids. just as if you are newly banded. That

is what works for me anyway. Oh, and take the fish oil capsules.

Fish oil relieves inflamation. On really tight days, I cant eat

anything till I have had my fish oil caps. I take 3 two times a day.

Hi, CaTHY - If there was something stuck in and blocking the small

stoma, you would be totally unable to swallow a thing, and would be

violently barfing and having bad pain from the esophageal spasms.

This is an emergency.

I think it's much more likely that you just badly irritated the stoma

and it swelled as usual, making it harder to swallow but not blocking

the openbing altogether. A true BLOCKAGE is very rare, and gives

severe pain and trouble. When things are truly too big to ge through,

they don'

t even start to go through, but sit against the stoma and make us

barf, so it comes up.

You may have a leak, from what you describe. Small leaks take several

weeks or even months to leak out completely. The only way to tell ius

with a dye test. A safe dye is injected into the port, as if it were

a fill, and then serial fluoros are done. A big leak can be seen

almost immediately, but a small one can take several fluoros over

several days, anhd a lot of skill, to see. I know of several small

leaks that did not become evident until the 6th or 7th daily fluoro,

but was finally seen by the very skilled doc and experienced (with

bands) radiologist.

It'sd also common not to feel the fiull effects of a fill for 1-2

weeks. It can taek this long for the fill to settle in, and this is

described in the Inamed literature. so we can never tell how a fill

will be (unless it is clearly too mucha nd needs some removed

quickly) for at least 1-2 weeks. Also, there ius often some initial

swelling of the stoma for 1-2 days after a fill. This mimics

restriction, but is not restriction, only temporary swelling that

will resolve. This swelling is the reasion it's wise to have fluids

only for 24 hrs after a fill - to allow the stoma to rest and heal

from the normal irritation of the fill.

That full 3.5 cc missing does sound suspicious, I'm afraid - I'd

suggest asking for a dye test when you see the doc next. Schedule the

visit on a monday, so you can have daily fluoros if needed through

the week. Missing them over a weekend would mess the detective work

up. Leaks can be hard to see. Please let us know how you are..

Good luck with all this!

Hi, mila - It's very common to have a swollen and irritated sroma

with ANY trouble. The GI mucous is extremely sensitive, and bleeds

and swells with the slightest irritation.

Do be careful of fish oil capsules. Most are too large to safely

swallow. All meds should be aspirin-sized or smaller. This becomes

more and more impt as we get tighter and tighter fills. If capsules

and other meds do not safely get thru the stoma, they will sit there

against it, and cause problems sooner or later. Many people don't

understand how impt this is, especially with irritating meds like

antibiotics, iron, and a few others.

If you'd like to try something smaller, the Omega 3 oils are also in

flax seed oil, and these come in 500 mcg caps. These are what I use

to get the Omega 3 oils. I don't know the dose of fish oil you're

taking, but 6 a day sounds pretty excessive.

What dose dose your doc have you on? Excess causes as much trouble as

too little - it prevents absorption of vitamins, gives extra

calories, and there is no benefit to excess that I know of. ONE gram

a day is the dose recommended for people with known cardiac disease,

and less for those with no known cardiac disease. The caps are often

1 gram each, so if you take 6 a day, you may be taking 6x the

recommended dose. Large doses of fish oil supplements have potential

side effects that include nausea, diarrhea, belching, and more.

Large doses of fish oil can also increase the risk of hemorrhagic

stroke, suppress the immune system, and decrease glucose control in

people with diabetes.

As with all supplements, there are many risks and dangers with

excesses.

Also, be sure that any you take is stated to be FREE OF MERCURY. The

ocean fish that the oils are derived from can have high mercury

levels, and that is very unsafe.

Here is more info on fish oil and the doses safe:

http://www.berkeleywellness.com/html/ds/dsFishOil.php

Just some things to consider re fish oil that your doc may not have

gone over with you.

You're right that the manipulation from a fill does cause some

temporary swelling, and it's very wise to go onto fluids only for 24

hrs after a fill. some docs then also want a day of soft foods before

we return to regular foods.

But we should be able to eat a decent small meal of solid protein and

veggies within 3-5 days of a new fill, or the fill is too much.

Remember, we need to be avoiding all liquid calories most of the

time, so 3-4 days of liquids after every fill adds extra calories and

sabotages band loss. We need to get back to solid foods within a few

days, becuase they are the only foods that make the band WORK for us,

keep us SATISFIED, and promote loss.
