Well, I don't know about whether its good for you or not but I gave up

drinking about 5 years ago. I used to drink lager but I got to the

stage where 1 or 2 pints and I would have a hangover and feel terrible

for days after. I worked out that my metabolism was so slow that i was

not processing and getting rid of the alcohol so I stopped drinking

altogether. Now I only have to have one small glass of wine and I feel

ill! Might be psychological.

I only used to go out about one Saturday a month.

Hi Jen,

Working on the basis that hyperthyroidism is probably well able to

cope with some alcohol (it by-passes some of the glucose-using

circuits in the mitochondria) and produces pyruvate directly, perhaps

it's true that being hypothyroid doesn't benefit it (the

mitochondrion) in the same way; indeed it may clog up at least one

the metabolic pathways (with acetaldehyde).

In either case, the need for sufficient B vitamins is paramount.

Maybe, vit B1 and folic acid, could help ease the way.

....always worth a judicious try out.

best wishes

Bob

That would account for the hangover I had last month after a friends party. I'd been fine that night no signs of being drunk but the hangover the next morning. I was sitting in church praying that I wouldn't have to run out.

I'd better be careful then. I had noticed some effects from just having a glass of wine with dinner but thought it was all in my head but maybe it was this delightful condition that I didn't know I had.

Well - I take B12, Vitamin B complex daily, and partake hefty glass or two of wine in the evenings to wind down from what is usually a very busy day. I do not have any adverse affects - and very much look forward to such a break.

Luv - Sheila

Just one sip of anything alcoholic will make me feel dizzy and give me

a headache. I got the Bach rescue remedy and didn't realise it has

alcohol in it to start with, I used it for a day and I was drunk (I'm

not kidding) on a few drops of it! Ruth x

Hi,

Just like Sheila, I wind down at night with a couple of large glasses

of wine, no problems at all. My sister who is also hypo is the same.

I guess it depends on the individual.

Hi Jen,

As our whole metabolism is out

of whack then it obviously affects tolerance. Me, I could drink like a fish- I

have to be careful now I’m well again. Others have the opposite effect-

get tiddly on only a drop before treatment.

Isn’t this hypo thing fun eh? ;-)
