Guest guest
hi Amy I don't know if I have any antibodies. well I think I have had the tests and they always come out zero. I think for a long time my immune system wasn't working well anyway. I never got sick but I was severely hypo. I had a partial thyroidectomy at age 22 and no meds for 30 years. Supposedly I was hyper but all my symptoms were severe hypo (like constipation for weeks, lived on exlax, brainfog and I was a senior in college in the honors program OMG). I guess I was Dxed by TSH alone and I trusted the docs. I have been on cortef for a few years. I was taking Iosol but now I realize it just wasn't doing much, decided to try Iodoral partly b/c of MD writing favorably about it. I was just curious and my usual approach is to experiment since most tests haven't been too helpful. When I started Iodoral I was having hypo symptoms of tiredness, brainfog at times. Seems like you would need more Armour. On cortef and Armour I do feel that I get more out of what I eat, I don't feel starved all the time, but I do eat like a truck driver I love good food. I don't think I have lost or gained weight on Iodoral. Gracia Gracia, I am interested in your experience. Do you have the TPO antibodies or any other antibodies? Were you still having hypo symptoms when you began iodine. OR had you already had adrenals supported for a while? Do you take l-tyrosine & when did you begin that? Thanks for whatever you share. Your theory about nutritional deficiencies being caused by low thyroid is shared by many. If this is true, then it seems that thyroid needs strong support to help correct any deficiencies. Just in your opinion, do you think that is true? I am on Cortef & 2 grains & stilll have bad fatigue. I am interested in improving deficiencies I can find & I recently began taking ConcenTrace. I take selenium with E, and well rounded cal/mag zinc, & balanced minerals. I read that part about fat, carb, protein metabolism in Dr. Shames book. My experience with Cortef was rather miraculous WRT food cravings (I was stage 7). I haven't had the iodine loading test.AmyGracia wrote: my theory is that nutriional deficiencies are caused by low thyroid low adrenals! Everything gets messed up. Guest guest
Wow, to be hypo & then get a part t-dectomy. Thank you for sharing your experience, Gracia. I'm glad you found help with the iodine. Based on your experience, iodine might help hypo symptoms or more Armour might be needed (or both). Do you plan to go off Cortef? If not, why not? I really liked how I felt on Lugol's.. that means I will probably try it again (lol). It would be nice if the trace minerals & more Armour support will help me with tolerance. It's fantaxtic that iodine is known to help breast cancer & cysts. As a recap, I stopped Lugols after my neck became a little fuller & when I noticed a stinging in thyroid. One interesting thing about my stopping Lugol's is that I seem to gotten more hypo. Just a perception... I felf much colder, more constipation & fatigue. My experience with Cortef is like yours... I'm not starving all the time any more. I crave meat & sandwiches.... not much interest in sugar. More than anything, the Cortef has stopped weight gain. Guest guest
but how much Lugols were you on? I forget. I have felt fullness in my neck too, as well as other hypo symptoms, but I just thought the iodine was doing it's thing. Going off of Iodoral or reducing dose was worse than symptoms on Iodoral. I never thought of taking more Armour for hypo symptoms! Right now I have achey legs/knees which I have never had b4 so I am wondering if iodine is doing it's thing there? will be interesting to see if that symptom passes. I am on my feet all the time at work, worked 46 hours last week. Right after partial T I developed a cyst in my salivary gland. Of course docs operated on that and now I am numb in that area. I have been on 50mg Iodoral since mid February. I thought that and I started at same time, but she says she started mid March. Gracia Wow, to be hypo & then get a part t-dectomy. Guest guest
That was my experience with the iodine too. After 5 weeks at 50mg, I felt a mild soreness/stinging in my thyroid & felt like I had pressure on my throat or maybe a sore throat. I went off it for 4 days. The pressure went away. I resumed at 1 drop/day (6.25mg). My energy is slightly less & my feet feel colder. I'm not constipated. My hands are still warm. BUT, I ran out of my thyroid glandulars around the same time. My Nature-throid is due for delivery soon (if my NP doesn't get me Armour first), so I haven't re-ordered it. It has also turned a lot colder here. I can not say for sure if my slight worsening of symptoms is due to the reduction of the Lugol's, the glandulars or the colder temps. The glandulars also had adrenal cortex, as well as thyroid glandulars. I'm still on my Isocort. I noticed the same lack of cravings with the Isocort. Carb cravings are gone. So is caffeine, for the most part. I easily stopped my 2 cups/day of am coffee & went back to green tea right after I started it. The last two mornings I did have a 1/2 cup of coffee as I felt a little less perky than usual. Still haven't figured out if that's the iodine reduction or the thyroid/adrenal glandular reduction. I added 1 extra Isocort to my a.m. dose to try compensating for the elimination of the glandular complex & will see what that does. > I really liked how I felt on Lugol's.. that means I will probably try it again (lol). Guest guest
I cut back to 25 mgs of iodoral because my neck/thyroid was swelling up. Plus I was getting large cyst-like pimples on my neck, chest and face. Since cutting back the above symptoms have stopped. But now I am trying to firgure out why I have dizzy spells and light-headiness. Also, while I was on 50 mgs of iodoral (approx. 2 months) I developed a nodule in my thyroid. And twice I had a lymph node on the side of my neck ballon out to golf ball size... wierd uh?. Since cutting back no problems. Guest guest
I was only on 2 drops/day of Lugol's for 3-4 wks. The fullness in neck came first, but I didn't stop Lugols until I experienced a stinging in thyroid. This sounds weird, but about the time I was getting the stinging, the energy/brain lift that I had gotten from Lugol's was fading ... as though perhaps I needed more to support the awakeness that I want. I wonder if others have had a waning 'lift' from their doses. I can't help but wonder if iodine back then might've avoided or reduced your thyroid & salivary gland issues. As a side note, I've read many who consider 'achey' as one basis for determining when to increase Armour dosing. Apparently, the aches subside with each increase & then eventually stay away. This however is beyond my experience, as I am on meds that control fibro pain ( & I would love to get off). A book by Dr. Young says there is a feedback loop in thyroid so that the body adjusts to Armour... and this is why many docs believe that you have to eventually meet or exceed normal output of thyroid gland (3-5 grains). Keep on trying Gracia. Amy Gracia wrote: but how much Lugols were you on? I forget. Guest guest
Well, to me your symptoms (light headedness) sound like hypoglycemia... which is linked to adrenals. This is speculation of course... but in case this is true, adrenal support stopped hypoglycemia for me. I perceive that iodine interplays with the adrenals or cortisol... but don't understand it. I'm glad you've found a way to take the iodine. I hope your lymph & neck swellings don't come back. Please keep us posted. Guest guest
Yes, I have considered hypoglycemia. But for years now I hve eaten very little sugar... my diet is mostly protein, vegetables and a little fruit. I've had horrible candida problems in the past... been through that whole route. Studied candida cures now for many years and that seems to be under control. I took isocort for a while eventhough my doctor said I didn't need it (not really sure she knows that much about the thyroid/adernal connection eventhough she is an endocrinologist). My energy level is quite good these days... compared to 2 years ago when I was falling asleep at 10 am in morning at my desk. If I do take isocort, I seem to swell up with edema... I hate that feeling. Tho... I do take isocort before I work out and this seems to acceptable to my body. I have reduced my armour from 3 grains to 1.5, per doctor suggestion because my T3 and T4 are in range but my TSH is way below range (.01)and does not seem to be responding. But lately I have noticed that I am getting more hypo symptoms again.... I take a whole bunch of bio-identical hormones since my body was producing none! Not sure yet how I feel about them yet accept it is costing me about $120/month!! Not sure how long I'll keep that up! I had the lymph nodes ultrasound and they appear to be ok. I am going to have a needle biopsy done on the nodule in Dec. Suzanne > > > I cut back to 25 mgs of iodoral because my neck/thyroid was swelling > > up. Guest guest
I really think that 50mg Iodoral works better. That may be why it's recommended. Fibro is on the list of low iodine symptoms. I am thinking at this point that MAYBE I will try again to stop HC. It's really hard for me to do! I think my adrenals have healed a bit. I am on 240mg Armour. Gracia I was only on 2 drops/day of Lugol's for 3-4 wks. The fullness in neck came first, but I didn't stop Lugols until I experienced a stinging in thyroid. Guest guest
If you wean from the HC, do it slowly. I hope you can wean off of it! I was on cortef for a year and weaned off of it.
