Guest guest
I am on the 2nd day of drops of Lugol's and am noticing a funny, sort of metallic taste in my mouth. Has anyone else experienced this?Missy================== I had that with Iodoral. I just noticed today that the prickly feeling in my neck and the heavy under the jaw feeling is gone - along with that weird taste. They are known "side effects" of iodine supplementation. Guest guest
I don't taste the iodine that I take in my orange juice at breakfast. But today, I have noticed just a pervasive taste. I don't think a mouthwash would take it away because it seems to be in my saliva?? Missy > > I gargle with Lugol's diluted, 3 times a day. Guest guest
Thanks, . So it is normal and will go away with time? Feels like I am having more saliva too.. But I am only taking 2 drops (12.5 mg)so it should be okay. Missy > I had that with Iodoral. Guest guest
I have more saliva too. It's a good thing though because I was low after RAI. It is also a known reaction to iodine. Buist
Guest guest
Very interesting, ! I have read Dr. Brownstein's Iodine book, but don't remember seeing anything about those things. Guest guest
Missy, my understanding is that a metallic taste is one of the classic signs of "iodism", or too much iodine. I would probably reduce the dose. I found this quote in Brownstein. "Rarely, have I observed iodism (metallic taste in mouth, frontal sinus pressure/pain, and increased salivation). Iodism is easily rectified by adjusting the dose of iodine down or simply telling the patient to await the resolution of these symptoms which takes approximately 1-3 weeks." Clinical Experience with Inorganic Non-radioactive Iodine/Iodide Article by Brownstein, M.D. Includes his history with iodine, as well as the section on Clinical Pearls http://www.optimox.com/pics/Iodine/IOD-09/IOD_09.htm Zoe I am on the 2nd day of drops of Lugol's and am noticing a funny, sort of metallic taste in my mouth. Guest guest
Very interesting, ! I have read Dr. Brownstein's Iodine book, but don't remember seeing anything about those things. Missy ========================================= Ok, now I wonder. I just re-read the article. I read it quickly this morning and didn't catch that it was "too high". Hmmm..... now what do I do? But actually my increased salivation is to a normal level again and the metallic taste is gone. http://www.vrp.com/newsletter.asp?c=1144023657015 & k=/index.asp & m=/includes/vrp.css & p=no & s=0 Iodism Iodism occurs when the dose of iodine is too high and results in a metallic taste in the mouth, increased salivation, sneezing, headache, and acne. Also, sinus headache, especially headache in the frontal area, and a sense of fever may be present. Iodism occurs in a small minority of patients and is easily rectified by adjusting the dosage of iodine used. I have also been very tired since I started on Iodoral. I upped my Armour 1/2 grain to compensate but I wonder if this has something to do with it. I am using the magnesium, vitamin C and a Detox shake from my ND. Detoxification Reactions Iodine can cause a detoxification reaction in the body by facilitating the body’s release of the toxic halides fluoride and bromide. If the body’s detoxification pathways are overloaded when the toxic halides are being released, a detoxification reaction can be triggered. A detoxification reaction can take the form of fatigue, muscle aches, fever, diarrhea, and brain fog, skin rashes, etc. Though a detoxification reaction to iodine usage is rare, it has happened. A detoxification reaction can be minimized with using nutritional support (vitamins and minerals), balancing the hormonal system, getting the body’s pH balanced, eating healthy foods, and other holistic treatments. This will be discussed more at the end of this article. Things that make you go hmmmmm............... Buist

Guest guest
Thanks, Zoe. I think I will go back to 1 drop instead of 2. Seems strange that 2 drops would be too much for me. Guest guest
Nope, but that's supposed to be one of the signs of too much. Maybe cut back to 2 drops on even days, 1 on odd?-- prrsewmissy2 <sewmissy2@...> wrote: I am on the 2nd day of drops of Lugol's and am noticing a funny, sort of metallic taste in my mouth. Guest guest
Yes, Missy, it does seem strange. Iodine seems to be something that has big differences in how much an individual person needs. You might want to look through the Brownstein case studies (under Brownstein under Clinical Pearls). He sometimes has to use very tiny amounts. It is important for all of us to remember how unique each of us is, in so many ways.... Zoe Thanks, Zoe. I think I will go back to 1 drop instead of 2. Guest guest
I am seeing that Dr. Brownstein sees Iodism as not a big deal: Iodism is easily rectified by adjusting the dose of iodine down or simply telling the patient to await the resolution of these symptoms which takes approximately 1-3 weeks. And I am also seeing that Dr. Brownstein does not see many improvements with low dose supplementation: After testing individuals and finding low iodine levels, I began to use smaller milligram amounts of iodine/iodide (6.25mg/day). Upon retesting these individuals 1-2 months later, little progress was made. I therefore began using higher milligram doses (6.25-50mg) to increase the serum levels of iodine. It was only with these higher doses that I began to see clinical improvement as well as positive changes in the laboratory tests. I am going to do a little more thinking on this and may go back to the 2 drops (12.5 mg) of Lugol's that I was taking. It does not look to be life threatening to have the metallic taste and increased salivation. I did not have the frontal sinus problem that was described. Guest guest
This is interestng to me. I am currently not taking iodine because the side effects just got too intense -- metallic taste, extra salivation, insomnia and the awful smell of bromide detox. I may try painting for a while to ease back into it.
