Gerald,

I had mild tinnitus in my left ear pre-CI. After CI, I now have mild to moderate

tinnitus in both ears. I'm afraid now is not the time to ask me how I feel about

that because my tinnitus has been bothering me all day.

As for voices and delusions, I have them too, but they are due to my bipolar

disorder -- not my CIs.

Gerald,

I understand and can relate. I used to do the same thing after I lost my hearing

in 1995. In fact, when I was hospitalized for severe depression, I had to be

restrained because I started screaming at one of the nurses after she told me to

turn the stereo (located in the lounge area) down. What made me even more

frustrated was the fact that there was a Deaf patient there who used an

interpreter and could understand everything that was being said in group therapy

while I could not. That was too much for me to take, so I took out my anger on

the nursing staff. I told my psychiatrist how I felt about it too and she agreed

that I had every right to be upset.

Noisy places cause me problems as well. When I'm around crowds or alot of

background noise, it makes me very nervous and manic (a symptom of my bipolar).

That in turn causes stress which then results in me hearing voices, becoming

delusional and extremely paranoid.

However, I've just been put on a new med regimen and I'm doing better. I've also

found that the softer maps my audi put on my CIs helps calm me down whenever I

feel hypomanic (mild mania) or have a headache.

I've had tinnitus for most of my life, before and after implantation. I

don't notice it (unless I really look for it) when I'm hooked up and hearing.

Gerald, my tinnitus prior to my CI could be described as a bell curve I

used to experience it frequently. It has decreased tremendously since I

had my CI surgery. I am bilateral, and do not hear sounds as mechanical now.

When first activated, yes there is the chip monk or duck sound

effect but once my brain got used to the incoming sounds, sounds became clear

and enjoyable.

poor but natural hearing in one ear for the mechanical sound but

acute sensitive hearing.

I can still get tinnitus if I go without my processors on for more than a

day or so. Then it becomes so bad I have to pop them back on to mask the

sound.

I remember on the very day I was to be activated for my second (bilateral)

implant, a horrible incessant buzz started in my head - it was so loud and

insistent that I nearly went crazy. It was a very frazzled patient that

showed up at the audiologist's office that day!

Gerald,

I think I had mild tinnitus pre CI. I still have mild tinnitus and

sometimes it gets quite annoying. The worst was the day of surgery. I had

coffee afterwards and oh boy did I find myself inside the waterfall. I

drank decaf for a week and it went back to the usual.

There are so many factors that contribute to tinnitus. Fever, weather,

medications, moods, diet, you name it.

Hi Gerald,

I had one episode of severe vertigo around 1966. I thought it was from a viral

infection. The tinnitis came in 1969. The Meniere's came in 1970 and the

diagnosis of Meniere's came in 1972.

Hi Gerald,

My tinnits came from the Meniere's disease. I didn't get the cochlear implants

(CI) until 2005 and 2009. They have actually helped with the tinnitis. My

tinnitis is less severe since the surgeries and when the CIs are on they mask

tinnitis. One of the possible complications of ear surgery is increased

tinnitis though.

Best regards,

Hi ,

I had episodes of very loud tinnitis for a few days after both CI surgeries. I

think that is pretty common with the surgery with or without coffee.

Hi Gerald,

Yes, the tinnitis in my left ear started in 1969 and that ear was implanted in

2005. The tinnitis in my right ear started around 1990 and that ear was just

implanted on April 15, 2009.

I heard a fire alarm right in my head 24/7 for a few days after surgery before

it finally subsided. Drove me nuts (short trip) Once I was activated the

tinnitis pretty much went away unless I'm tired, have to much caffeine (dang,

there goes my chocolate) or get and overload of salt. I find keeping busy so I'm

not concentrating just on the noise in my ears helps when the tinnitis starts up

again.

Oh my gosh, Gerald - I just got reminded (by rereading posts) that you are

in NY! My goodness, you have your pick of places! They are all so

wonderful. If you click on " Stories " on the web page - you will see mine - I go

to

NYU. on this forum goes to - um - I forget! LOL But she loves her

surgeon and CI center, too. As to tinnitus - I've had it forever - before

and after - but the CI does " mask " it a lot better than the hearing aid did.

My dear Gerald - if you are going to NYU - have no fear - if you are

anywhere close to being able to benefit from a CI, you can be sure they will see

to it that you get one! LOL Don't tell them you know me, or they may charge

you double. LOL Good luck! who is your audi and surgeon? Jackie :o)

Yes. I had a high pitch ringing in both ears before my CI like a choir singing

seemed to deal with it okay.

Does the tinnitus that results from surgery go away after a day or a few days?

Or can it last a long time, months or years?

Hi Yaegr,

Normally it goes away after a few days, but it can persist. That is one of the

possible complications from the surgery I had to sign off on.

Hi Larry,

Congratulations! I just went bilateral on April 15th and I'm loving it! The

second CI has made a huge difference for me. I'm finally over the post surgical

and anesthesia recovery. I now have directivity and stereo hearing is

wonderful.

Best regards and wishes,

Hi Gerald,

I am very pleased with the performance of my CIs for TV and stereo. I do not

need to use captioning or an assistive hearing device on the TV. The stereo

sounds very clear like before I came down with Meniere's disease. I'm sure

regular normal hearing is better, but I'm very pleased with what I have now. It

is head and shoulders above anything I ever had with hearing aids. The

distortion, hyperacusis and recruitment are gone.

Best luck with the CI workup.
