? Why are you falling so much? I hope you've mentioned this to your

doctor and gotten yourself checked out. You don't strike me as the " clutz "

type, so I hope there is nothing medically wrong. Get checked, Sweety! Jackie

She did mention it was BLACK ice, and there is no walking on black ice. I

remember it well when we lived in Kentucky over 20 years ago. I hope I never

see black ice again.

I don't like walking on any ice, but I can navigate regular ice if I walk

carefully and slowly. Black ice always seem so greasy and I can't stand on

it without falling, much less walk on it.

Hey ,

Thanks for the advice on how to take a fall. In both cases, it was

quite sudden, slipping on ice I didn't realize was there. Apparently I'm

good at falling, since I do tend to land on arms, etc. Maybe it was all

my dance lessons when I was a kid. Graceful when she falls as an adult.

Trying to keep my posture good. Physical therapist is always harping

at me about how bad my posture is. So try to do that, which doesn't

include bending at the knees.

Thanks,

One thing I was taught by my childhood mobility (indoor/outdoor travel

for the blind) instructor is to walk with my knees slightly bent. When

walking, she recommends that you walk with your body leaning slightly

forward so that if you do fall, you can twist your body to the side and

fall on your arms and legs instead of your head and back.

Hi Jackie,

Thanks for being worried. I mentioned it to the physical therapist.

Is this MS, Parkinsons, some other dread disease? She said, NO, it's

ICE, and everyone is falling. Just be careful.

So it has been checked out. Also put ice on my recently injured

shoulder, and it feels 100% better today. Go figure. Little " hair of

the dog what bit me " .

If you saw how many times I ALMOST fell but didn't, you'd know I have

good coordination and fairly good balance.

Glad you are feeling better, . I somehow missed the " black ice " part

when I read your first post. I certainly know what it is and am always warning

my hubby of it when he insists on going out for late night snacks on a cold

icy night! LOL Jackie :o)

Hey Jackie, and ,

A hubby who will go out in foul weather to get snacks is a keeper for

sure. I try to run all my errands at once, so I don't have to go out

late at night. Make sure I have the basics (soda, potato chips,

pretzels, dip) before the big storms. You can't find milk in the stores

when they predict a snowstorm around here. You'd think we lived in

Little house on the Prairie. I personally have a stash of powdered milk,

worse comes to worse.

As for falling and breaking your ankle and lying in an alley for 6

hours, , couldn't your dad have crawled closer to where people were

and asked for help? I've walked on broken ankles more than once. Hurts

like the dickens, but beats frostbitten butt. And alleys have close

walls to hang onto.

I was walking my dog at 1 AM when I fell. She didn't even mosey over

to see if I was hurt because I immediately started cussin and swearing.

She figured, " Mom's OK, she's cussin " But the past few nights, she

walks very slowly, and stops every few feet to make sure I'm still on my

feet. What a sweet dog. You'd almost think she understood what I tell

her about " no running, Mom is old. " Worth brewing her coffee every now

and again as a treat, even though I don't drink it myself.

Snowing outside again. Who needs this? Not I, not my pooch.

when I was a child, and my dad was walking down an alley to come home one

night, slipped on ice, fell, and broke his ankle. No one else came along

in the alley, and he wasn't found until the next morning, about 6 hours

later. He had frostbitten his rear end, plus the ankle, so he was in a

lot of pain for a long time.
