I'm pretty sure the cautery would be for wounds around the head, near the

implant. Nowhere near your colon. I've had a couple of colonoscopies

and they removed polyps, and I never even asked what kind of cautery they

used. And my implant still works.

Even though I fell yet again on Friday night, and this time I DID hit my

head. Very close to where the implant is. Pooch even came over to see

if I was OK. Or to nibble my nose, I'm never sure with her. But achy

breaky body. Nothing broken, implant is fine. Called the Drs answering

service " physician on call " who said if I didn't have double vision, no

bleeding, wasn't knocked out or lost consciousness, and was able to walk

back home on my own, just put ice on it, take some tylenol and go to

sleep. It was, I kid you not, the ONLY patch of ice on the street, and I

found it.

My big craft show is over and was quite a success, so that's good.

Now, to stay on my feet!

Boy - I have no knowledge of this, but it has gotten me to thinking - what else

is out there that I'm unaware of that may be something I should know about

before having any type of procedure done???  I would have just gone in for a

colonoscopy, totally unaware that it could impact my CI...........

Sometimes ignorance is bliss, but geez, at what cost???  So, bottom line is, how

do I become aware of these things prior to something negative happening???

Whatever made you think about the impact of monopolar vs bipolar cautery during

a colonoscopy on your CI???

Subject: Monopolar Cautery.................

Hi All,

Hope everyone is doing well. Group has been on the quiet side....

I have a question for all: has anyone had any type of cautery done

since implantation?

Upcoming colonoscopy for myself and another member here....

Both gastros are saying they use monopolar, our surgeons recommended

bipolar. AB tells us if the 'head is grounded - not touching any

metal' - monopolar cautery will be OK. This is IF there are polyps, by

the way.

Both of us are on the nervous side about the monopolar and

being 'grounded'.. ...

So we were curious to see if anyone here has experienced a medical

issue like this?

Thanks for ANY info!

Lots of hugs,

Michele

Hiya, it's true. Lots of stuff out there we need to keep informed

of...

As I've stated, I've had polyps in past colonoscopies. The test

itself is unaffected. But if there are polyps, they need to remove

them, thus the cautery comes into play.

I proceed with caution with everything I do - maybe because I'm a CI

newbie (June 2008)??

I've had polyps in a colonoscopy a few years ago, & I knew nothing about

what you are referring to, & I had no problems. Puzzled.

Monopolar Cautery.................

Precautions, that's all.

LOL

I wonder how they removed your polyps!

and all,

The best policy here is, every time you visit a doctor or dentist or

whomever where some sort of tool is used, show them your CI card and ask

that they call Cochlear (or AB or MedEl) and have them get the bottom line

and add the info to your records.

,

I had a colonoscopy in July and never even thought about this. Turned out I

had no polyps and certainly had no problem from the procedure. In fact, I

wore my CI throughout. I actually thought this issue had to do with

procedures done near/around your head. I would never have thought about

something in another part of the body.

Thanks Lynn.  Now I don't feel so bad.  But, I guess I'll have to try to be on

the alert if and when I have procedures done to make sure the surgeon knows

about the CI and takes it into consideration if and when they do something on

me.  :)

Hi - am glad all turned out well after your latest fall.  Hopefully all

the ice is gone in your area.  Now I would advise you to NOT come to North

Dakota as we are starting to thaw out from our deep freeze, and we have ICE

EVERYWHERE!!!  ;)

With that said, when I got your email it didn't show up at the top with my most

recent emails, yet my inbox indicated I had one more email than the new ones at

the top of my list.  So I did some searching, and here yours was, clear at the

very bottom.  A little more looking, and lo and behold, you sent this from the

past!!!!  November 8, 2004 to be exact.  Now, please tell me, how on earth did

you know on 11/8/2004 we were going to be talking about this subject????  Or

could it be that your implant now gives you the ability to go back in time????

And maybe it also has given you something like magnetism toward icy patches???

LOL

Seriously though, be careful out there!!!

A follow-up: Shortly after reading this discussion a few weeks ago, I needed to

schedule my first colonoscopy. The gastroenterologist who will be using the

procedure uses a monopolar device, so I called Cochlear Americas and talked to

an audiologist there. (I have a Nucleus Freedom). What she told me was:

Bipolar cautery is OK.

Monopolar is OK as long as it's not in the head or neck area. An electrode

(called the " neutral " or " indifferent " electrode) is placed on the outside of

the body when using monopolar cautery, and that needs to be in the trunk or

abdominal area or below. The nurse says they will place mine on my hip, just to

be safe.

Hope this helps!

Hi all,

Thanks, Dan. I obtained the same info about being below the head/neck area. We

really need to keep on top of our CIs - lots of things doctors don't know!

Anyway, I had my colonoscopy yesterday - and my doc removed a polyp. Prior to

the procedure, he did a good amount of research. Although he was comfortable

with the grounding pad and below the neck, etc, etc., he opted to take it a step

further and moved my procedure to a hospital - rather than the Surgicenter.

They had this 'bipolar' gold snare instrument which can be used in place of

monopolar. It's not easily found, but is out there. He also had a GI surgical

specialist from the hospital in the room, just in case anything out of the norm

came up. All went well. He really went the extra mile!

Thanks for everyone's input. Hope this info will help others in the

future........

Take care,

Michele
