Guest guest
Hi . I got mine at Walgreen's also for about $10 nearly three years ago. On it I have: My Name Hearing Impaired Cochlear Implant No MRI Understand that this is not like the Medic Alert where they take and keep your historical medical data on file. but a lot cheaper. <stblood@...> wrote: Hi, I'm just curious if anyone has emergency ID bracelets for their CI(s). If so, what did you have put on yours? I hadn't really thought about it until my sister said, " you should have something that identifies the CI in case you're in an emergency situation and no one is with you and you're unconscious. They might not notice it and/or they could fly off if you're in a car accident or something like that. " At first, I was just thinking, " she's right because of the MRI's and such " They might be quick to use that instead of find an alternative if possible. Then I started thinking about them trying to awaken me by yelling my name or something and obviously I wouldn't be able to hear them if the CI's were off. I have the cards the company gave me in my wallet but something could happen to that as well depending on the situation. Anyway, let me know your thoughts. Where did you get yours? Is it an ugly old thing or what? I just picture this thing that my great-grandmother wore years ago so you can imagine. Guest guest
Oh my dear , medic alert bracelets have come a long way since your grandma's day! ) _http://www.ebiz.netopia.com/aboutme/_ (http://www.ebiz.netopia.com/aboutme/) _http://www.beadin-beagle.com/_ (http://www.beadin-beagle.com/) These are just two websites - if you google medical ID bracelets there are lots more sites for you to look at. Most do not have service where you pay each year. I believe the official site for that is Medicalert.com - I don't have that. My bracelet says: Cochlear Implants - L & R NO MRI Diabetic - Type 2 On the front side I have my name - Jackie Hope this helps. Jackie ) **************Get fantasy football with free live scoring. Guest guest
I just had my second implant surgery and I want to get myself something special in a medical bracelet. _www.americanmedical-id.com_ (http://www.americanmedical-id.com) has something called the Lynx collection and one of the bracelets is made from titanium! I love the style of it and I figure if there is titanium in my head, why not on my wrist! If you read up on the metal it is really amazing. Pricey though. OH! And I decided to get vanity plates for my car! LVMY2CI. Cool huh?! **************Get fantasy football with free live scoring. Sign up for FanHouse Fantasy Football today. Guest guest
, I wear one that has my name on it, says " cochlear implant " , " No MRI " . I have a larger one that adds another sentence that says, " no monopolar cautery in head & neck area. " It is a good idea to have one, especially if the CI falls off during an accident or something. Hope this helps! -- Laurie in TN Severe/Profound Hearing Loss since 1957 Implanted with Freedom 8/30/05 (left ear) Activated 9/20/05 Implanted with Freedom 1/30/07 (right ear) Activated 03/01/07 " As long as I live, I'll hear waterfalls, birds, and winds sing. Guest guest
Hi Laurie, I am another MediAlert Dog Tag with more information to be added. May I asks what do you mean when you said " " no monopolar cautery in head & neck area. " that you are thinking of adding to yours? Thank you in advance. Guest guest
Dolly, The " no monopolar cautery in head & neck area " message for my bracelet was given to me by my CI doctor. Once a patient has a CI, there is a special " knife " that surgeons cannot use because it will affect the internal processor. Don't ask me how but I know that he had to use a different knife for my second implant, which took longer and was probably responsible for my longer recovery time the second time around. Every time I am near medical equipment or need a procedure done in an office, I always ASK if it will affect my CI. Better safe than sorry! Hope this information helps. - Laurie in TN Severe/Profound Hearing Loss since 1957 Implanted with Freedom 8/30/05 (left ear) Activated 9/20/05 Implanted with Freedom 1/30/07 (right ear) Activated 03/01/07 " As long as I live, I'll hear waterfalls, birds, and winds sing. Guest guest
Interesting. I had no idea what monopolar cautery might be other than I think cauterization is stopping bleeding via heat. I found this: " Cauterization using high frequency electrical current passed from a single electrode where cauterization occurs; the patient's body serves as a ground " That makes sense but I don't understand about the knife. Guest guest
It is my understanding that once you have a cochlear implant, the " grounding " of the knife will affect the internal processor but I'm not sure how. My doctor had to use a regular knife or scalpel for my 2nd CI surgery, which involved more manipulation, tugging, etc. than what he would have done with the monopolar cautery knife. It resulted in more vertigo for me and a longer recovery. . . Guest guest
Thanks, Laurie. I had no idea that a knife could serve for both cutting and cauterizing. Guest guest
Thank you all for your numerous replies. So thankful that I don't have to get the " great-grandmother " looking bracelet. I called my doc to confirm what should be put on it so all I need to do is get something ordered! I appreciate all your help. Guest guest
He said to have them put the following No MRI Cochlear Implants (left and right ears) No Bovie Cautery - I asked if this was just to the neck and head area and the nurse said, anywhere in the body.
