Re: Another CI child dies

If nothing else, the post acted to remind us of exactly how the Deaf

Culture feels about implants. When I was doing a rebuttal on a

presentation by a nurse who said NO child should be implanted, because it

didn't work with HER child (who had no language, spoken or signed until 8

years of age when he was implanted, and then did no follow up with speech

pathologists or AV therapy), Several people in the group mentioned that

" PEOPLE DIE FROM CIs " . No , they didn't have the facts, and when I gave

them the facts, (that it was ONE implant manufacturer, and one STYLE of

implant that has since been withdrawn from the market) they didn't want

to know about it. So the damage was done by ONE woman who failed to get

her child the inoculation that was recommended. NOW many in the Deaf

community think it's a question of hearing or death. And all because of

the failure of one person to take the precautions she was told to do.

Seems if they were " always out " of the vaccine, she should have been a

stronger advocate for her child and her child's health. But she figured

it wasn't going to happen to her or her family, and as a result a child

died who certainly didn't need to. It was tragic then, it is tragic now.

What is almost as bad is the backlash against cochlear implants that is

still among the culturally Deaf people. They believe that getting an

implant will cause them to die.

Good point, .

I received a strongly-worded recommendation from my doctor and audiologist back

in December urging me to get vaccinated - I believe that the medical profession

is more aware of the issues now and are letting parents know that their children

must be vaccinated if they receive implants.

I still think the scare tactics by those who are ASL-only oriented are

needlessly cruel - I do apologise for assuming that herself had written

the message and I'm sorry I offended people. Obviously I haven't been a member

of long enough.

Kat,

You said " I still think the scare tactics by those who are ASL-only

oriented are needlessly cruel "

No doubt about that. But I think we need to also remember that there is

that side to life and we must always be ready to counter it. Sometimes it

has to be done indirectly.

To be honest, your reaction to 's was not that off the wall. We do

not always see the whole picture, be it via emails, or TV news, etc. And we

do not always stop to consider that and try to find out more.

Youth would be an ideal state if it came a little later in life.

has been on this list, which I'm pretty sure, a long time...

People should know better than this from . I mean why would she

bash against CIs all of a sudden... if she has been on the group for a

long time and has CI...

I don't even know that well and I already knew it wasn't her who

wrote the article... doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that

one either.
