Guest guest
I normally don't respond to anything, but I can't stop myself on this one. I agree completely with Ralph. I also believe it was a very noble thing for the family to do to donate her organs. Judy Ralph Chiaradia <ralph.chiaradia@...> wrote: This is the ugliest, cruelest posting I have ever seen. Guest guest
This is VERY ugly as you said and completely unnecessary to scare people. If anything, this should scare people into getting the vaccines and not taking no for an answer. The CI is a marvelous piece of technology and has been a blessing to so many individuals and families. One thing that should be brought to everyone's attention is this: although it is an awful thing that this little girl died (and my heart so goes out to her family), just think of the people she has helped through her organ donations. She may have made the lives of some other people so complete and that is the other message here. One little girl can help so many people. Yes, it is a terrible thing that she died, but there is a plan for all of us, and maybe the plan for this little girl was to help others in the most unselfish beautiful way a person can and that is through organ donation. ________________________________ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Ralph Chiaradia Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2008 11:47 AM Subject: Re: Another CI child dies This is the ugliest, cruelest posting I have ever seen. Guest guest
Hello Kat. Yes, the post was cruel, but it is just another reminder to those of us who have and are happy with our CI's that there are people in the deaf community that are spreading misinformation. The point is, as was said in the article, that this tragedy could have been prevented with an innoculation. The writer of the E-Mail that was sent by (on top) conveniently left out that important fact and blamed everything on CI's in general. If someone in the deaf community is considering a CI, they must do research and believe their doctors and Audies, not just blythly believe what predjudiced people say out of anger without the true facts. Also, I thought surgeons would not do the surgery unless the patient was vaccinated. Of that, I'm not sure. To me, the fact that the poster bad mouthed such an unselfish act as donating Kathy's organs should show readers what kind of person wrote the post " ksalkin@... " <ksalkin@...> wrote: Ugh - please - why did you post this? This was unnecessarily cruel. Kat Original Message: ----------------- From: wdywms@... Guest guest
What I don't understand is why everyone is being so passive about this ridiculous post?? It is a truly sad day for the family and I feel for them, but WHY must it turn into a political tool to further the narrow-minded view of the " D " community? And what is with the doctor that is supposedly quoted in the story... saying " They believe it may have been caused by 's cochlear implant " ?? What is that? Her CI didn't cause any disease! While its true that certain models of certain devices have been involved in Meningitis cases in the past, the CI itself DOES NOT cause Meningitis! If there is Meningitis present, it is true that having a CI can provide a more direct path to the brain, but she wasn't killed by her Cochlear Implant. Most likely, until that point, her life was enriched and blessed by having her Implant. It was incredibly rude and inaccurate to post this story in this way. Guest guest
Hi- I recently went bilateral with AB---My doctor and the hospital both provided me with literature stating that I should get an inoculation just in case. They were very upfront about it. I can tell you the second CI-bilateral has made all the difference in the world-I can now understand television without captioning and can talk with almost everyone--it's like you get your life back. I don't understand why the D community is so against hearing.I mean why wouldn't you want to hear???? Guest guest
I must jump in here because is being attacked over a post she sent about a child who died a year ago because her parents did not get her the necessary innoculations as a cochlear implant recipient. A reminder to us all is good because if you have an upcoming implant surgery - seeing this should make you realize the necessity of the meningitis shot. It's not an ugly, mean post. What is ugly is that the parents were either ill informed or didn't think getting the shot was important enough to take the time to have their child innoculated. If this is circulating among the Dear lists, it will be scary but if anyone on those lists is preparing to have the implant, hopefully the message will make them take the necessary medical precautions. If you have not had the meningitis innoculation - hopefully you'll see the need too. By the way - not only does have a CI - she is a warm and wonderful active member of this list. Her message was an important one. Thank you, ! Guest guest
I apologise for overreacting but I have to say my first reaction was repulsion - then after I sent my response I realised that's exactly what the writer intended. You might have added that this has been making the rounds and is a propaganda effort to turn parents against CIs. Guest guest
And if you read the DATE of the story, it was February of last year. So this news has been out for more than a year. Giving a child hearing was the right thing to do; not getting her vaccinated was a huge mistake on the part of the parents. I believe the child had the implant with the positioner, that has since been withdrawn from the market because of the incident of meningitis associated with it. But there was NO excuse for her parents not getting her vaccinated. This is the ugliest, cruelest posting I have ever seen. Down below I left on where it said it could have been prevented with a vaccination. Shouldn't that be the real message? Guest guest
If you read the date on this story, it was Feb of LAST YEAR. The child was implanted years earlier, and had the implant with the positioner, that was and still is associated with an increased risk of meningitis. I believe she had the implant for something like 5 years, and even after the particular device was recalled because of the increased risk of meningitis, and letters were sent to all people who had implants regardless of brand to GET A VACCINATION, her parents never got around to it. They are to blame for this needless death. Not the implant. Also, I thought surgeons would not do the surgery unless the patient was vaccinated. Of that, I'm not sure
Guest guest
The bias in your post is so obvious, , that I will NOT respond to anything else that you write here. The meningitis could have probably been prevented with a vaccination to the child. Surely thats a more positive message to be passing on, rather than the bile you wrote. Guest guest
, DIDNT say at that time, that she was just passing something on that was in another group. Why are you surprised at how quickly people react to MISINFORMATION? Ted F. > > Ted, > simply shared the post, she did not write that. Guest guest
Ted, Take another good look at the post that has you so riled up. If you dont see it, well, sorry Ted, but you, as well as others, have grossly over reacted. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* I replaced the headlights on my car with strobe lights. Guest guest
I agree with you 100 per cent about the vaccination, but the message should have been posted saying it was something that was being spread by anti- CI advocates. That would have made me angry at the right people and for the right reasons. Kat From: M Jansen Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2008 10:03 PM Subject: Re: Another CI child dies And if you read the DATE of the story, it was February of last year. Guest guest
has always been very supportive on this group, I think she was sharing something she saw elsewhere to reinforce the importance of being vaccinated and to show how inflammatory the subject of CIs is in the Deaf community. I strongly feel for that family who lost their child, and I hope that such a tragedy will prevent another one from occurring...Jodi > > > > I agree with you 100 per cent about the vaccination, but the message > should have been posted saying it was something that was being spread > by anti- CI advocates. Guest guest
I commend for taking the effort to spread the word about the importance of vaccinations. My daughter, now 4.5 contracted bacterial meningitis twice in her short life. Even with the vaccination, she was still susceptible. It is extremely important for us to know the dangers of this illness and work towards preventing it every way we can. Michela was fortunate both times, the first time, we did in fact almost lose her...but she has a strong will and came out of it with very little regression. My heart goes out to the family that did lose their little girl a year ago. Nothing can make that pain go away, let's be supportive and not so eager to stir up unnecessary battles.
