Primary and secondary - and others

My insurance company, UHC and Blue Cross, informed me that once I became

eligible for Medicare, they would sign me up for it and Medicare would then be

my primary insurance. I had no option for this. My insurance company told me

that Medicare MUST be primary. Once I received the Medicare letter, my private

insurance then became secondary. They did reduce the cost of my private

insurance dollar for dollar, for the amount Medicare charges.

I only have Medicare but may look into getting supplemental coverage.

What I am curious about is, how or who determines which is primary and which

is secondary. And if its an option, what is the best way to go?

Also, how does one find out if a potential supplemental plan will cover

a 2nd CI?
