Guest guest
Before I got my CI, I hadn't used a phone since 1997. Now I make all the phone calls I wish because I hear everything. Guest guest
I used the phone, but didn't like to, because I only heard about 50%, at best. Now I hear everything...and am gaining confidence every time I make a phone call...it's so easy! http://stereophonicbionic.blogspot.com/ On Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 8:42 PM, Carol <carol@...> wrote: > Before I got my CI, I hadn't used a phone since 1997. Guest guest
Hi Dan, Before my CI, I hated the phone. It was such an ordeal to hear on it. I really didn't have the speech distinction needed for the phone so I only talked to close friends or family members when I had to so not very often. I would grip the receiver with a death grip as if that would help me hear and understand the other person on the phone. My siblings used to get a kick out of how sweaty the receiver and I would become after a short phone call. Since hook up day, 6 years ago, I've come a long way with the phone. It took me a long time to pick up the phone and talk to someone once my CI was hooked up. The Fall after my hook up, I decided I was going to start conquering the phone and I called each of my 8 siblings on their birtdays and surprised them with a happy birthday greeting. My dad got such a kick out of my first phone call to one of my brothers. I was sooo proud when I hung up. He said to me, " You know, Patti, most people don't call long distance just to say hi and then spend the rest of the time in silence with a happy look on their face. " I couldn't help it. I had blown my brother away by calling him and it was just sooo good to hear his voice on the phone. I'm still not a phone person but I can answer it and do very well with those who know me and last week I was very surprised to find out that I also do very well with total strangers on the phone even calling the oil company to order a refill with no problems at all. Have a great day! Patti Surgery Day 11/25/02 (What A Day!) Guest guest
Dan, I was using the phone prior to getting the CI, but should not have been. I missed quite a bit and it was very frustrating (and this was with 2 ears using the Phonak Microlink FM system). After getting the CI, I was able to use the phone right away with my t-coil. In fact, I listened to some voice messages the night of activation. I was talking on the phone during the first week. Guest guest
Hello, Prior to getting my CI about 2 years ago, I used my VERY poweful hearing aid on the other ear to use the phone. It was a HUGE struggle. I now use my " CI ear " for the phone and it is no longer a struggle. Prior to getting the CI, my " CI ear " was unable to ever use the phone. It did take several months for the " CI ear " to gain the understanding to use the phone, but now it is fine. Guest guest
I hated the phone as a teenager. I guessed at most of what was being said. My washing machine broke yesterday and I called a stranger to get it repaired. That is something I would never have done before. No problem. I am now 51 years old. I still have problems with someone speaking too fast. Guest guest
I couldn't use the phone before I received my CI. I depended on a CapTel phone. Now I use the regular phone. However, some days are better than others. I was implanted in September 2007 and turned on in October 2007. Guest guest
I used the regular phone with my hearing aid for years...but with very little success...I preferred to only talk to people I knew, and even then my success rate wasn't very high. With the CI I can pretty much talk to anyone and I get nearly all of what is said....and that's just at three months after activation (implanted Nov. 5th, activated Nov. 20th, 2007 ) Bilateral AB User On Tue, Mar 4, 2008 at 7:02 AM, Nina <cipalm@...> wrote: > I couldn't use the phone before I received my CI. Guest guest
Before CIs, I used a (two line) Captel at home and a chair pad loop at the office. That allowed me to use both induction coils in my hearing aids. I got to the point where the " stereo " did not work at the office and I got the two line captel for the office as well. That was a sign I needed a CI as my comprehension had been gradually dropping as I got older - some would say my warranty had " expired " like when I had to start using reading glasses! <G> The Captel at the office was a big help after my first implant while waiting for activation/rehab last summer. I had the analog lines on a month to month contract, so I had flexibility. I did use some real time transcription for some conference calls I had to participate in. After 4 or 5 months, I got rid of the two line captel and use the regular phone at the office. I think somewhere else you asked about time btwn implant and activation - one week for me.
