Guest guest
Hello everyone, I often hear of CI users changing or adjusting the programming levels according to the environment. But do some of you CI users sometime also change the volume level? And what might be some good example settings whereas you might raise or lower the volume in your CI? I'm wondering cause in my 2 years I've had the CI thus far, I've often looked at it from a " adjusting the programming level's perspective " . That it occurred to me that I ought to look into the possibility when adjusting its volume could also be beneficial at times. I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance! Guest guest
Hi Dan My Nucleus 5 has a remote control and i can raise the volume and lower it. I can also change it to other programs. there is also a setting for the phone. But to date the only time I ahve done anything differently is when having dinner at my daughters Red robin restaurant where she was my waitress I turned the whole thing off altogether and just smiled and ate my soup and salad. It was ridiculously loud in there with so many little kids running around. If ever I ahve been allergic to little kids it's when in that restaurant. the noise was jsut unbearable. I ahve my volume and programs locked to one setting. It's like one setting fits all occasions. Have a great day! Debbie Cole
Guest guest
Hi Debbie, Smile. Ok, cause there's one scenario I'm kind of wondering whereas it might be helpful if I raise the volume. For instance, let's say I'd be driving or walking around outside and perhaps have it set at a lower volume. And then to perhaps show up in a meeting whereas there might be a presentation going on or something to that sort, would it be helpful if I raise the volume in that setting? Thanks! Guest guest
Dan If I were you I would raise the volume in that setting, yes. Have a great day! Guest guest
I change everything depending on where I am. For example, loud restaurants get Beam/Auto sensitivity with the bubble on close and the volume on middle. If it's a really loud restaurant/venue, I'll lower the volume just to get the people closest to me. If the crowd sounds disperse, then I'll increase the bubble and the volume. Whatever it takes to get the most out of what I want to hear. The same goes with whatever situation I'm in. Everything's changeable - program, volume and sensitivity and I use it all. Only thing on my processor I don't use is the T switch. I can hear just fine without it on my cell phone (again, changing the bubble or volume depending on the surrounding sounds). Guest guest
Hi Dan - when I'm in the car on a long road trip I switch to program 2 which is Autosensitivity and BEAM. This cuts out the car noise, and allows me to hear the radio or other people speaking easily. Program 1 is a basic program that I use 99% of the time. When I'm in a noisy restaurant I use BEAM with ADRO and will play around with the sensitivity more than I would with the volume. My normal volume is set at 5, while normal sensitivity is 10. When I go for a walk outside, I use my regular program, and if I want to hear the little birds singing in the trees, I would raise my sensitivity so that it would pick up more of the softer sounds. I find this more helpful than raising the volume. When I'm in meetings, it will depend on how noisy the room is. If it is before the meeting starts and several people, or groups of people are visiting, then I would use the BEAM with ADRO to hear the people I'm visiting, and reduce the sensitivity to cut out the background noise. If the room is quiet, and it is only the speaker that is speaking and difficult to hear, I would increase the sensitivity to pick up the speaker's voice better (reaching out farther to pick up his/her voice). I like to think of normal hearing in that they don't increase the volume when they can't hear something, the brain will reach out and focus more on the sounds it wants to hear, perhaps zeroing in on those sounds, much like the sensitivity does with the CI. I think of sensitivity a little like standing in a middle of a bullseye, with the first circle around me a 1, and the farthest circle away a 20. If I only want to hear the sounds closest to me, I will select a smaller number, but if I want to hear the sounds from the outer circle, then I will increase the sensitivity to 20. I don't necessarily want more volume (like you do with a HA), I just want to hear sounds farther away. If you find that you are needing more volume, to me, this may mean that you need a new map.  But that is just my experience. Have fun experimenting and finding what works for you!  ________________________________ From: <HHIssues@...> Sent: Sat, May 22, 2010 8:58:08 AM Subject: Re: Volume Adjustment in CI's  Hi Debbie, Smile. Guest guest
Hi , This gets me thinking that I ought to get the Nucleus 5, this way it'll be easier to test the different programming levels at different settings, etc. Thanks for your post! Guest guest
Dan, did a good job explaining sensitivity. Another way of looking at this is a window. A closed window is zero sensitivity, meaning no sound gets in. The more you open the window, the more sound you are letting in. Volume is the perception of loudness. Generally, this does not need to be adjusted on a regular basis. If you need to max it out, you may need to have your t and c levels adjusted by the audi. The Nucleus 5 upgrade is an awfully expensive solution to tweaking your programs. You have 4 programs. What you may want to do is note the default volues (volume and sensitivity) for each one, note which program does what, then, in the appropriate environment, tweak the sensitivity. The goal is to get the best speech comprehension you can while reducing the background noise. Adjust the sensitivity up or down and see what works best. Quote of the nanosecond. . . (With loud music playing in the background) " Hello... HELLO?? I can't hear you! What? Oh.. we're not home, leave a message. " & Dreamer Doll ke7nwn E-mail- rclark0276@...
