A Mom Writes to Us After Discovering DVS This came into via email this week, check out the mom's blog for more at <http://www.highway59.blogspot.com/>: Today my 3 year old son and I popped in the Netflix DVD of Toy Story 3 and as I was getting it ready to roll, I noticed the language menu options. I had never heard of the second choice English Descriptive Version so it took me by complete surprise. After choosing that option, my heart filled with gratitude for the work you have done. Our baby was born last June with congenital cataracts and while she has some vision, we know that her outlook on life will be greatly different from that of our own. We have worked very hard and worried a lot concerning giving her every chance for a great start in the learning process. What caught me off guard when the amazing descriptions flowed into my ears, is that it mattered to a group of hard working, obviously dedicated people that my little one could also enjoy some of the good pleasures of life! Thanks a million. --Find a list of all the DVDs that have an optional description track at www.describedmovies.org.-- 4. Take a Survey: Text-to-Speech Delivery of Description of Web-based Video WGBH's Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) is conducting a joint study with IBM-Japan on the feasibility of using text-to-speech software to deliver descriptive narration of Web-based video. No worries— we're not considering uses synthesized voices to describe movies and TV, just video that appears on the Web (and that is proliferating at a rapid pace). A survey is posted now at the URL below. We invite people who are blind or have low vision and who are over 18 years of age to take the survey, which will be posted until Friday, March 4. It is fully accessible with screen readers, and should take between 45-60 minutes (though folks report finishing it in less time). http://www.surveygizmo.com/s/461112/3i40b 5. Captions and Description for Digital Cinema Currently Focus Features, Relativity Entertainment, Summit Entertainment, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox Films, Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures all provide closed captioned digital cinema packages. When a studio offers a closed captioned digital cinema package for the films it releases, we will indicate such on the www.mopix.org site, and add this line to the listing in our weekly update: #cc dcp# Twentieth Century Fox Films, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Walt Disney Studios provide both captioned and audio described digital cinema packages for most of their releases. When a studio provides both closed captioning and audio description in a digital cinema package, we will indicate such on the MoPix site and in our weekly update with: ##cc dvs dcp## Learn more about access features for digital cinema from this resource we maintain: Access to Digital Cinema Systems/Frequently Asked Questions: <http://tinyurl.com/y9h2k9p> 6.
