Processor Forward Compatibility

Hi,

I know that the Nucleus Speech Processors can be made compatible to newer

internal implants. I know a lady who received her Nucleus Freedom implant in

2008 and since she could not afford the whole ammount and her health insurance

and savings only contributed a small amount our CI centre issued her a

refurbished 3G and she is happy that she can hear again.

I would think that if a person who has a N5 implant needs their N5 processor

repaired and their CI centre only has a Freddom loaner, they will be able to MAP

that and the N5 recipient will be able to hear with it. I think it is the Speech

Coding Strategies that makes a Speech Processor compatible with the internal

implant and since the Nucleus 24M, Nucleus 24C, Nucleus 24CA, Nucleus Freedom

and Nucleus 5 run the same 3 speech coding strategies then the processors will

be backwards and forwards compatible. I know that the Nucleus Freedom and

Nucleus 5 can run at a higher processing speed, meaning they can run at the same

rate as the Nucleus 24M, Nucleus 24C, Nucleus 24CA and also higher processing

rates.

I have the CI24M using 3G with my 1st CI and Nucleus Freedom using Freedom SP as

my 2nd CI. My audi said she can MAP my 3G for my Nucleus Freedom ear and she can

MAP my Freedom SP for my CI24M ear. If she MAPs my 3G for my Nucleus Freedom ear

she will disable 2 electrodes then using 20 electrodes. If she MAPs my Freedom

SP for my CI24M ear, she will activate all 22 electrodes.

Regards

Ilana
