Welcome in Dzndef. I don't have that page, but it does exist. I'm sure

someone will chime in and send the link soon. all the of brands are excellent

- it's more a matter of features that will help you make the deciding

factor. Congratulations on failing the only test you really want to! LOL

Hi all, newbie here. Bi-lateral Meniere's for 14 years and I've FINALLY gotten

" deaf enough " to qualify for a CI. Now I have the intimidating task of

selecting a manufacturer/product.

Do any of you have a link to a page that presents un-biased information on the

various CI products out there? Something like an average word recognition score

after 3 months of activation (or 6 months or a year)? The more detailed info

the better. I seem to only be able to find anecdotal stories or marketing

material. I'm hoping to find something more scientific and un-biased. Some

sort of universal testing across all brands. Does such a thing exist? Thanks

for your help.

I'm afraid you won't find alot of information in this regard. Hearing ability

depends on a variety of factors including length of deafness, exposure to

hearing aids, language acquisition, etc. etc.

Thanks, . I'm aware of the complexities which is why I was hoping for some

intelligently designed tests. I figure with a large enough sample-size meeting

a specific criteria (for example, post-lingually-deafened adults might be one

table, pre-lingually deafened another, etc.). Get a sample size of 100 or more

people and a picture should start to emerge, along with all sorts of qualifiers.

I know this data exists (everyone with a CI is tested, right?). I'm just

surprised that no one seems to have collected and published it.

You might find it at the FDA or the NIH sites - implant companies have

to test their devices and file the results with the FDA before they

come on the market.

In the 10+ years I have been tracking information on the 3 brands of

cochlear implants, there have been only comparisons published online, both

now obsolete, citing technical details only.

If any report, such as you are seeking, ever was published (Don't hold your

breath) the " Brand War " that would erupt would make Iraq look like a

birthday party! <G>

Thanks for the welcome, Jackie. And yes, I was ecstatic to finally fail that

test! I texted my friends " Good news! I flunked! " 16% word recognition in the

" good " ear. No idea it had gotten that bad. I am blissfully ignorant of just

how overly-loud I'm talking in public (until my friends put their fingers to

their lips). Looks like a fun, informative group here. I look forward to

learning from your collective wisdom and experience.

Hi,

Since you have residual have you contacted Cochlear and Med El directly to see

if you qualify for the studies they are running on Hybrid/EAS (combined CI &

HA). It is worth the price of the phone call, toll free :-)) or email.

Good Luck,

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

I know the Hybrid is good for some, but I don't think it is a good idea for

those of us with Meniere's Disease.

Best regards,

Jim
