Guest guest
Carolyn, Yes, I'm on the meds, but the relief is minimal. I'm allergic to the trees, the grass, everything, and it's all growing now. I know better then to go mow, but my husband hurt his knee so I had to do it because he couldn't. So this weekend I got a double dose of allergens between the tree pollen all over everything and cutting the grass. I'll be back to my normal half sick from allergies for the spring instead of feeling like I'm dying in a couple of days. I'm just making sure to take the meds and keep my air purifier in the room with me at all times. (Even have one at work!) Tonya > >I made the mistake of mowing my lawn Saturday morning. Guest guest
I've tried like 5 different things, none of which seem to work for more then a couple of hours at a time. Unfortunately, they say that they are 24 hour meds so I can only take them once a day. So in between I take OTC Claritin and Benedryl. First thing in the morning, its the Zyrtec, about noon its Claritin, and in the evening its Benedryl (it puts me to sleep). I can't do the Nasonex or Flonase as I end up choking on them. Not sure why they go in my nose and out my mouth, but since it's all connected, I guess it makes sense. They just don't stay where they need to in order to bring relief. Oh, and if it gets really bad, I'll use my inhaler for my asthma. That actually works better then the other stuff for clearing up my nose. (and I inhale it through my mouth, go figure!) Guest guest
Yeah, that's what I take first thing in the morning. It's the Claritin D at noon. I don't know what I would do without the Decongestant, probably drown in all this goo! I swear I just have overly active mucus glands. Guest guest
Yeah, but unless I'm in the room with it, it doesn't help. Does work for when I'm sleeping though. Unfortunately, the one I have is too much of a mess to take to work with me. I do have a second air purifier up there though, that does help because it gets the pollen out of the air in the gym. I don't know what I would do without my air purifiers. Guest guest
What do take for allergies? Snoopy Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry OT: Allergies Hi everyone, I currently take a once/day med for allergies. However, I've been miserable lately and am finding that my med is no longer helping me during the afternoon and evening hours. I called my GP to ask if I can raise my dose, but was told by her nurse that it is strictly a once/day med. My GP is out of the office for the weekend, so I was asked to do the best I can until she returns on Monday. Do any of you have suggestions for an OTC med or alternative treatment that can give me some relief? I need to find something that will help me breathe and rest comfortably. Thanks,
Guest guest
Snoopy, I take 180mg Fexofenadine (Allegra generic).
Guest guest
Let me think can you change the time that you take the med so that it would be more effective for you during the afternoon and evening hours? Like maybe changing it to noontime? Snoopy Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry
Guest guest
Snoopy, No, I can't do that because if I wait until noon to take it, I'm symptomatic when I wake up in the morning. My allergies cause congestion, sneezing, a dry cough, dry throat and headaches, so it would be best if I can take something which would give me relief throughout the day. It just occurred to me that Zyrtec is sold OTC. I might give that a try and see if it helps. I've been having trouble sleeping over the past several days, so perhaps I can kill 2 birds with one stone. When I took Zyrtec 2 years ago (when it was prescription only), it worked quite well for me. Unfortunately, I can't take Zyrtec regularly because I'm on a limited income and can't afford the expense. Guest guest
I can't take anything with a decongestant in it (causes blood pressure to go up) so I take Mucinex to clear my sinuses so I can breathe at night. Don't know if this will help you with all of your other symptoms though.  ________________________________ From: " lkozlik@... Guest guest
, Mucinex is another option I could try. Thanks for the suggestion! By the way, I also thought of Clariten as well, so I do have several choices. I think I'll start with Zyrtec and see if that helps. Guest guest
Yes, I thought of Claritin too, but when I tried it, years ago, it dried everything up so much it hurt to breathe for a couple of days. So that stuff was too powerful for me.  ________________________________ From: " lkozlik@... Guest guest
Be careful with those sprays, . You don't want to become too " addicted " to them. I do use a nasal saline spray which helps me a lot. But that may or may not be strong enough for your needs. I once got addicted to Afrin...and had to be weaned off of them. Not a pleasant experience. Best of luck in finding a solution.  ________________________________ From: " lkozlik@... I'm sure that will help. The management of my apartment complex mowed the lawn earlier today. I had the A/C on with the windows closed, but could still smell the grass from inside. Once 7am comes, I'm heading to the drugstore. LOL.

Guest guest
This isn’t immediate relief, but it will help to eliminate your allergies and need for daily medication: local honey. Take a spoonful or two a day. I was on two sprays and a pill before I started doing this and now those prescription meds are in the cabinet getting dusty. It has to be a local to you honey, but you can probably find some at a health food/nature store or a farmer’s market. My favorite is a cup of hot water, 2 spoons honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Taste like tea and it’s great. Rae From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of lkozlik@... Sent: Friday, June 05, 2009 4:02 PM Subject: OT: Allergies Hi everyone, I currently take a once/day med for allergies. Guest guest
- I use a combo of drugs for allergies - When they start bothering me it's Fluticasone (flonese) nasal spray and Albuterol inhaler. If it gets worse we add the Advair inhaler. With that, you must rinse your mouth after inhaling. Over the counter my son uses Clariton D. I don't suggest an over the counter inhaler, as it could be contrary to whatever causes your allergies and cause more problems. Check with your doctor. Hope you feel better. Guest guest
, I went to the drugstore this morning and picked up some Claritin D to help my congestion as well as Vicks to help me breathe. I had coughing fits during my walk because the weather is cooler today, but at least the wind helped remove alot of the pollen that was in the air yesterday after my apartment manager mowed the lawn. I have the windows open and am cold, but at least I'm no longer congested, coughing or sneezing as much as I was yesterday. Long story short, I'm feeling much better now after having taken the Claritin D and Vicks. As far as the nasal spray is concerned, I've used them in the past. To eliminate the problem of becoming addicted, I use them off and on every 3 days.
Guest guest
Rae, I don't like the taste of honey or tea, but I do appreciate the suggestion. Thank you! I decided to buy some Claritin D and Vicks which are both helping my symptoms. I'm no longer congested or sneezing as much as I was yesterday. Vicks is also relieving my dry cough and dry throat. Thank you again for your suggestion Rae. I appreciate it. <smile>
Guest guest
Rae, Thanks for letting me know about Astelin as well as the warning about Flonase. Guest guest
- I don't know the science of it, but I do find that the inhaler helps relieve the cough. It is used " as needed " and it does work immediately. I believe it is known as a " rescue " inhaler. (I use Albuterol) I start using it as soon as I realize I'm coughing or have the feeling of shortness of breath. To describe the feeling, for me - when I laugh hard I start to cough and feel short of breath. So I use it then, as well as when my seasonal allergies kick in - and that can be both Spring and Fall. Super cold can bring it on, too. The Advair is for more severe symptoms and works over time - not immediately.
