Guest guest
I didn't have the problem with losing my taste, Meaghan, but my wife has always insisted that I have poor taste anyway so that may not mean much. ;<) Virg > I was implanted a week ago and almost feel back to normal. Guest guest
Hi, Meaghan: Taste disruptions are a common (temporary) side effect of cochlear implant surgery. I didn't have it, but the two other people I was implanted with did. For them, it lasted 2-3 weeks. Anne losing taste after CI surgery Hey all... I was implanted a week ago and almost feel back to normal. Still have to take some pain meds and anti-nausea meds, but I'm up and about. My biggest problem is losing my taste. At first half of my tongue felt numb and food just tasted " weird " . Then everything in the numb half tasted like milk while the other half of my tongue tasted super salty. Now everything I eat tastes really really spicy! Did anyone else have this problem? And how long did it last? Its driving me nuts. I get cravings for certain foods, but when I eat them, I am disapointed by how awful they taste. So I've spent a week trying a ton of food and probably gaining a ton of weight in search of my taste buds.
Guest guest
My taste was affected both times I had surgery and on the side the surgery was performed. It gradually came back and I had " weird " things happen too. I could pull out different flavors or spices that no one else could taste and then some things I couldn't really taste at all. Spicy foods did not bother me at all where before my tongue will feel like it was on fire. For me, for the most part, things tasted bland. I think it took about 4 months for it all to return but like I said it was a gradual return. It was at its worst the first month and then slowly got better. It also changed as it got better. Hang in there. It's worth it! Hey all... I was implanted a week ago and almost feel back to normal. Still have to take some pain meds and anti-nausea meds, but I'm up and about. Guest guest
Meaghan, I did have that for a long time. Try eating on the opposite side from the implant. It helped me. Happy Hearing! Guest guest
Post surgery (both times) did NOT bring any side effects. My smell and taste were not changed. I did have to remember to NOT blow my nose hard. Neely, Dallas Texas > > Hey all... > I was implanted a week ago and almost feel back to normal. Guest guest
Hi , I did have that problem and it lasted longer for me than the others who responded to you. I was implanted in May 2007, and my taste buds only started to get normal around March this year. For me everythinng tasted sour, including sweets. Suddenly in March, everything started to taste salty, even sweets, and I could still taste salt after several hours. That's when I knew something was changing. It's still not normal, but sweet things taste sweet again. It was an unexpected side effect of the surgery for me, so at first I really felt put out. But I can't bear the thought of going back, and would give up taste forever in exchange for the benefits I get from the implant. Guest guest
Taste? What's taste? Just kidding!! My CI surgery was April 14. Almost immediately afterward, I noticed that water seemed to taste a bit salty. It still does. My tongue isn't numb anywhere, but feels sort of puckered...almost like I've had alum in my mouth. Really can't taste much of anything except something VERY hot and spicy like jalapeno pepper. This hasn't stopped me from eating, but I'm not enjoying cooking as much as I usually do...strange, isn't it?
Guest guest
Muriel, your taste buds will most likely return. Mine did. Unfortunately, I gained 15 pounds just trying things to see if they tasted good yet. Happy Hearing! Guest guest
Uh-oh! I think I'm heading to that 15 pound mark. I keep eating hoping to find something that tastes good. Guess I better get used to it since it sounds like it will go away on its own. Oh well. I can't wait to get turned on! 2 more weeks!!!! Meaghan > > Muriel, your taste buds will most likely return.
