In response to Anne's question about this forum:

I've only been on this forum for just about a year so I'm probably

considered a newbie. Here's what I do know...it is for people to ask any CI

related questions they have. We're here for CI related questions, to offer

some support, and share our experiences with CI's. However, and I'm not

trying to be rude here but sometimes, it seems like some people are using

the forum more for psychological counseling.

There's a huge amount of great information and varied experiences on this

board. It's up to the individual to discern what applies to them and not

assume everything that happens to everyone here will happen to them...good

or bad.

Hi ,

Actually the backwards compatability of newer processors to older

implants has only been true with Cochlear brand. I know the Harmony and

HiRes are not compatable with the older Advanced Bionics brands. And I'm

not sure about Med-el, whether their new processor work with the older

implants.

In the case of Cochlear americas, they will make new processors

compatable with older implants as far as that is doable. The Freedom

processor is available for the Nucleus 24 and Nucleus 22 users, but it

cannot run Hi ACE and HI CIS on either, and cannot run anything but SPEAK

on the Nucleus 22, because of the design of the internal array.

Still the Nucleus 22 and Nucleus 24 users get the advantage of 4 program

slots, disposable as well as rechargeable batteries and so forth.

You made the comment " If a better processor is imminent why go with an

obsolete one? " in one of your posts. The really great thing about the CI

is

that as the newest processors come out, they are always compatible with

the

implant in your head so you can take advantage of the latest technology.

So

why would you wait hoping something better will come along when you are

so unhappy with your hearing as it is now. Who knows when the next

processor will be available and why lose any more time when you could be

hearing so much better with the CI now and will be able to take advantage

of any of the newest technology down the road. I wouldn't give up one

minute of what I have now with my CI just to have a few more bells and

whistles later. Life is much easier and much more fun now that I can hear

again.

,

Everyone in my organization received reduced assignments.  My boss who is the

administrator had an administrative assistant and secretary.  Now he does it all

himself. The mail clerk weighed  a capacity shredded bag at 7 pounds 8 12

ounces.  That is under the ten pound ban.  I told some people that I may go for

surgery in three weeks and I am willing to do the work before then.

My surgeon email me today at 5 PM.  I replied and expressed confidence in his

judgment to make the minimum tests since the use of the equipment is paid for by

insurance but the radiologist may bill me. Strange my home caller ID got a 11:30

AM call after I set up an appointment with my hearing aid audiologist for new

tubing.  But there is Wednesday and Thursday too.

The most important thing to ask at the evaluation is I have sufficient residual

hearing in both ears and if I really need the total hearing loss in both ears.

But the audiologist will probably tell me that first.

I want to be early for the Friday appointment so I will retire early Thursday.

So I do not want people to think that I am ignoring them then.

In reply to Larry  whose message  I deleted some topics on this list should be

private since a lot of personal  chit chat is really off topic.  Yes some of my

problems are psychological.  I am not looking forward to having my head sliced

open if it is not a medical necessity.

Gerald - my doctor, upon hearing that I work at a desk on the computer, said I

could return to work the following Monday.  My surgery was on Thursday, and I

went to work the next Monday.  But, it is not only lifting you can't be doing,

but pulling on heavy doors, and the like.  That is the problem I encountered

when I went to the office.  I felt completely normal when I went to work, and

forgot that the door to the building was very heavy and pulled on it.  I still

felt fine afterwards, but wondered about the weight of the door, knowing I was

not to be lifting.  I did end up having minor complications, and had to take

another week off from work.  So, to be on the safe side, plan on at least a week

if not two.  It sounds like you have devised a plan - stocking up on groceries

before, and eating fast food for awhile.  That will work!!

Best of luck!

Hi All,

My work is not heavy lifting.  Actually, bringing back groceries is heavier.

But what is the usual amount of recovery time.  If I hear " forever " the cochlear

implant process is OFF.

, you posted erroneous information about Advanced Bionics. The AB

Harmony processor *is* compatible with all but the oldest implant versions,

and that is coming soon. I personally upgraded to the Harmony from an

older implant, and it works beautifully.

With regard to Med-El backward-compatibility, here's a clip from a press

release last month (May, 2009) on their latest Opus series processors and

the early Combi 40+ implant:

" In less than 12 months we were able to make the latest technology available

to all of MED-EL's users in the U.S., even those implanted a decade ago, "

said Dick Collette, President and CEO of MED-EL North America. " This is a

great example of MED-EL's commitment to our legacy patients. In most

technology applications, this level of backward-compatibility is unheard

of. "

To those interested in accurate information,

Even tho most of us only have one brand implanted in our heads, some

still like to know what the other brands are doing. Its hard enough to know

what one's own brand is doing let alone all 3 companies.

I think its only fair to present corrected info without the need to

attack anyone. Yes I know, who cares about the other brands? That really

is not relevant. So lets just stick ro making corrections when necessary in

a respectful manner.
