Thank you ,  that is the appropriate phraseology.  I comprehend much face

to face in a normal voles. However,  I do not comprehend the interview programs

on TV.  This is a major concern.

Jum and others,

" Will I hear people speaking softly and a few yards away? Maybe. "

We should be aware that there is a huge difference between " hearing " and

" conprehending " .

I hear the Russians and Chinese etc talking. No problem whatsoever.

On the other hand, I cannot comprehend what they are saying.

Oh, and, Gerald? In case nobody tells you - do NOT blow your nose after

surgery! That seems to be one thing people forget about.

If you must sneeze - keep your mouth open - that lessens the pressure on

your ear. HTH Jackie

Gerald - the surgeon will not gloss over details in order to " get your

business " . You said yourself how he is going out of his way for you. He is

very busy and doesn't need your business, or anybody else's, bad enough to skip

the important things every patient needs to know, including drawbacks. If

he is a good doctor he will tell you what to expect, and that everyone's

recovery is different - but mostly that this surgery is relatively straight

forward for most. Good luck at your appointment. Jackie

A belated thank you from me Jim.  BTW I am saving these responses in a

file folder for future reference.  The speech comprehension question is the only

topic left at the evaluation but the audiologist will understand my need better

since she will have the test result.

Gerald,

I had the surgery I do not need any information I was giving it to you.

If you have good low freq residual you should look into this or don't.

No offense but you appear to enjoy generating a lot of drama with all your

pronouncements...

Everyone responding has already been through this already, we are here to help

but come on already.

Hi Gerald,

You are welcome. As others have mentioned one's success with a CI depends on a

lot of variables. Hearing and conprehending soft speech, and enjoying a

performance at the theater without an ALD with a CI are certainly possible for

some, but not all CI users. A lot has to do with your hearing loss history,

your determination, and how much you work at listening with the CI.

Best regards,

Hi Gerald,

This is Suzanne and I'm going to add a bit to Jim's answer's to your questions

you listed for your Audi. (mine are in Cap's) You have a great list started and

I'm sure you will add more before your appointment. Even though you are getting

answers here, your Audi will have more to add and I hope you will share that

with us.

I can answer most of those questions.

Right now I have to ask the audiologist these questions:

* Do all your patients develop tinnitus after surgery? No. ALLOT OF US THAT

HAD TINNITUS AFTER SURGERY FOUND IT WENT AWAY WITH ACTIVATION OR WAS BARELY

NOTICEABLE. MINE WAS VERY LOUD FOR ABOUT THREE DAYS AFTER SURGERY BUT ONCE I GOT

RESTED UP IT MELLOWED OUT SOME. SINCE MY ACTIVATION, I DO NOT HAVE TINNITUS WHEN

I HAVE MY PROCESSOR ON BUT DO HEAR IT WHEN I HAVE MY HEARING AID AND PROCESSOR

OFF -- IT IS NOT AS BAD AS IT WAS PRE-CI, THO. VERY MINOR INCONVENIENCE TO

DEAL WITH TO BE ABLE TO HEAR AGAIN.

* Will a CI enable me to hear the consonants too? Most likely if you are

postlingually deaf. EVERY ONE IS DIFFERENT BUT THE ODDS ARE SURE IN YOUR FAVOR.

* Will I hear people speaking softly and a few yards away? Maybe. THERE IS A

PROGRAM CALLED WHISPER THAT YOUR AUDI CAN PUT IN YOUR PROCESSOR TO HELP WITH

THAT. THE BEAUTY OF THE CI IS YOUR PROCESSOR HAS FOUR SLOTS FOR PROGRAMS .

THOSE PROGRAMS WILL BE PROGRAMMED FOR YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS AND YOU CAN CHANGE

FROM ONE TO ANTHER OF THEM FOR DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS BY THE PUSH OF A BUTTON.

VERY EASY.

* Is going to the theater without infrared a reasonable expectation? May or may

not work for you. YOU HAVE TO GIVE IT A TRY TO SEE IF IT WORKS FOR YOU AND IF IT

DOESN'T, GIVE IT SOME TIME AND TRY LATER. AS YOUR PROGRESS IN YOUR CI JOURNEY,

THE BRAIN HAS TO ADAPT TO HEARING AGAIN AND TO THE DIFFERENT SOUNDS AND

SITUATIONS AND THIS TAKES AWHILE. YOU WILL LEARN TO CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT

PROGRAM ON YOUR PROCESSOR TO GET THE BEST HEARING FOR YOURSELF.

* When is activation? Why short or long waiting period? THAT IS SOMETHING YOUR

SURGEON AND AUDI WILL DISCUSS WITH YOU. MY SURGEON WANTED A MONTH SO I WAS

COMPLETELY HEALED UP - OTHERS DO IT WITHIN DAYS. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING

WHAT YOUR SURGEON RECOMMENDS.

* Will Audiology train me on how to work the processor? Yes. THEY ARE GREAT

ABOUT THAT AND WILL TAKE ALL THE TIME YOU NEED.

* In most patients is vertigo permanent? No.

* Do most patients feel a stigma with the CI? No. HECK NO AND - AS LONG AS YOU

CAN HEAR WHO CARES WHAT ANYBODY THINKS! WITH ALL THE NEW CEL PHONES HANGING ON

PEOPLES EARS THESE DAYS, PEOPLE PROBABLY THINK OUR PROCESSORS ARE THE NEWEST

VERSION OF ONE. LOL

Suzanne,

Whisper is just the thing that I want and need.  I do not travel by car often

and I do not drive.  So a back noise program is not essential to me.  I am not

sure what program 1 is but I believe it is for normal use.  Therefore,  I need

program 1, Whisper, face to face and music.

Whisper can take the place to face to face but it may be the same program.

Thank you so much.  Whisper may be the solution for my hearing need.

Gerald,

Again, you are getting way ahead of yourself. Way ahead. We are given

many programming options because each of us are different. What works for

one may not work for another even in the same environment. This process of

mapping will take months. Its good to collect all this information, but its

not good to make decisions prematurely. One step at a time, Gerald, one

step at a time.

Hi Suzanne,

Great answers!

I was in the Anchorage & Noble a few months ago and a guy noticed my CI.

He was wearing a cell phone in his ear. He actually came up to me and asked

" What kind of cell phone is that? "

Hi ,

Actually the mapping process takes years. I'm three and a half years out from

surgery for my original CI and I'm still getting mappings.

Jim,

I am hearing echoes today. LOL Oh just about everyone will continue to

get new maps. They are farther and farther apart and usually just touchups.

Its been some time and I am needing one now.

Do you find you need major changes or just minor adjustments now?

Whisper is just one of several programs that can be put in our processor

slots. I just wanted you to be aware that it is available because of your

concern of not hearing soft voices. Some people like it and other's don't

so it is one of those things you have to try out and see how it works. The

CI processor is not limited to just a few programs (like our HA's) Your Audi

can combine different programs and settings so you can get the very best

hearing. But, that is a ways down the road after surgery and activation.

Once you get the go-ahead, then is a good time to start learning about the

programming of the processor.

You made the comment " If a better processor is imminent why go with an

obsolete one? " in one of your posts. The really great thing about the CI is

that as the newest processors come out, they are always compatible with the

implant in your head so you can take advantage of the latest technology. So

why would you wait hoping something better will come along when you are so

unhappy with your hearing as it is now. Who knows when the next processor

will be available and why lose any more time when you could be hearing so

much better with the CI now and will be able to take advantage of any of the

newest technology down the road. I wouldn't give up one minute of what I

have now with my CI just to have a few more bells and whistles later. Life

is much easier and much more fun now that I can hear again.

Gerald - my doctor, upon hearing that I work at a desk on the computer, said I

could return to work the following Monday.  My surgery was on Thursday, and I

went to work the next Monday.  But, it is not only lifting you can't be doing,

but pulling on heavy doors, and the like.  That is the problem I encountered

when I went to the office.  I felt completely normal when I went to work, and

forgot that the door to the building was very heavy and pulled on it.  I still

felt fine afterwards, but wondered about the weight of the door, knowing I was

not to be lifting.  I did end up having minor complications, and had to take

another week off from work.  So, to be on the safe side, plan on at least a week

if not two.  It sounds like you have devised a plan - stocking up on groceries

before, and eating fast food for awhile.  That will work!!

Best of luck!

Hi All,

My work is not heavy lifting.  Actually, bringing back groceries is heavier.

But what is the usual amount of recovery time.  If I hear " forever " the cochlear

implant process is OFF.

Every CI recipient should be mapped once a year. I just went to get my

mapping this week and my T levels were not audible. It didn't take much to

make the audible again, but I had been missing out on sounds the way I was.

We just had a CI meeting in Michigan. We always try to have an audiologist

attend to answer questions as they come up even if they are not the speaker.

There were people talking to the audiologist about problems they were

having. Some of the individuals hadn't been back for programming since the

initial activation programming, that happened years before. They didn't

understand why they couldn't hear, yet their implants were on 20 for

sensitivity. The audiologist said that one time a year at a minimum for

programming if you want to have maximum hearing with your CI. For 22 years

I have always gone back for my once a year appointment, and I always walk

away hearing better than I did when I came in for the appointment. Ruth
