Guest guest
Hi, I am new here and I wanted to comment on this posting. I don't agree with your statement that 15-20 years ago, when we didn't have these meds, people did just fine. I'm a 57 year old woman who was raised by parents who grew up in the depression and went to war. Two big heavy weights. Unfortunately, because of the PTSD that the service men got in combat, the wives and children who had to put up with their angry drunken and abusive tirades. This in turn created dysfunctional, abusive homes. If those meds had been available then my generation wouldn't all be in recovery healing from the depression and dysfunction and the abuse that we all had to contend with while growing up in those homes. Thank God for those meds now. I am on Celexa and a whole assortment of psychotropic drugs to quell my flashbacks, nightmares, and body memories. I would be in an institution now if it weren't for the meds. But the generations before us WERE NOT O.K. I'm living proof of such. I was terribly abused as a child because I had a rare and severe skin disease that couldn't be treated or cured. My parents drank alcoholicly and abused me instead of taking me to a doctor and finding help. So, don't tell me that the previous generations past did well without AD's because they DIDN'T !! Many of us carry the legacy of the abuse and suffer from flashbacks on a daily basis...the legacy left over from the generation of parents who " did just fine " without meds. Sue C - Re: Industry's way to get you hooked in order to take your money barbara, you must have not read all of my post. Please go back and read the post and try answering some of the questions that I listed, besides trying to bash me. Obvioulsy my post did not apply to you if the drugs happend to truely help you. My post was for all those kids and adults whom are being put on these drugs each day just to cope with their daily issues and are being told by their doctors after only a 30 minute office visit that they need these drugs, when in reality they may not, and may only have a case of temporary depression due to issues in their life that we all deal with. Keep in mind that 15-30 years ago, we didnt have them and the general public (not those whom truelly need them did fine without them). TOday, it seems like these are the way of life. Many high school kids are taking them, so on and so on. Like I said before....I am sure these drugs have helped many many people like yourself. I was only refering to the other greater half. I knew my post was gona piss some people off and that was not my intention. I just wanted to make a point that there are lots of people taking these pills that really don't need to. Guest guest
How do you know people don't need to take these meds? do you know what their past was like ?, do you know whether they may have been sexually abused or molested as a child ? What may seem like an everyday common stressor to you might be a serious issue for those who take meds. do you know whether or not they might have been severely emotionally abused as a kid and suffer flashbacks ? In today's complex society with a war going on and general unrest in this country, this generation faces a whole different set of stressors than we did when we were younger. I think these are difficult times for us financially, politically, and socially. People today are facing some difficult challenges and if a white pill is what it takes to cope with life so that they can get thru it in a reasonably functional way, then I say go for it. It's just too bad this stuff wasn't available years ago. Also, I'm getting tired of being around chronically depressed and angry people who don't know they are depressed and don't believe in meds or therapy. They go thru their daily lives raising havoc with those near and dear to them because they won't go for help. Guest guest
Sue, So well put. I have had the same experience. I lived with a mentally abuse spouse for 14 years. If I would have known about these drugs then we could have gotten him some help and may still be together. Instead, it ended in a divorce and he is in and out of mental hospitals to this day. I take Lexapro and feel that it is my lifesaver. Thanks for speaking out. I also took offense to the previous posting. Diann > Hi, I am new here and I wanted to comment on this posting. Guest guest
I'm new. I am 51 and currenty on 20mg of Lexapro. I have Gad. I also have an abusive husband. Emotional and verbal. He started when he got out of the military in 1985 after being in 14 years. I guess he directed his anger towards me. I go to personal counciling. She suggested that I try Lexapro. So far no really bad side affects. I get tired in the evening to the point I just have to go to sleep. My energy just drains from me. I don't feel like the world is caving in on me, like I use to or having crying episodes. Recently I have become itchy. My back has little bumps along my spine. Don't know if that is due to Lexapro or using Tide clothes soap. But I am still have the Gad. Not driving, social anxiety and staying in the house. Guest guest
Debbie, As Dr. Phil would say, you need to get out of that abusive situation. I have been there & I'm a male. Please take someone's advice & save yourself before you wind up in the news. People care about you even though they don't know you. I wish this computer stuff was availible when I was going through it. Life is too short to be treated like a fungus ! Best Wishes, G. I'm new. I am 51 and currenty on 20mg of Lexapro. I have Gad. Guest guest
Depression and anxiety/panic disorders can be caused by severe, prolonged stress. What else would you call an abusive situation? It's very easy for you to sit there and tell everyone what they should be doing. But it's not that simple. Who are you to judge who needs these drugs and who doesn't? As to how we know who needs these kinds of pills? I'd trust my doctor before I'd trust someone like you who has no education in the medical field. Opinions are like a$$holes.....everyone has one. BTW, not everyone on this board is in an abusive relationship. In my judgement and opinion you have no business on this board. Guest guest
I'm not in an abusive relationship, I am the product of one. And the daily stressors are called life, but most people who are on meds are on them because they cannot cope with life because of the emotional baggage they carry inside of them. We cannot see another person's depression. We cannot see their past and know what they've been through. We cannot see into their heads to see what obsessive thoughts one might have. Depression isn't a character flaw or a weak will. Depression is a treatable chemical imbalance. Diabetics have to take insulin on a daily basis to regulate their body chemistries (sugar). It's the same thing with depression. It's a chemical imbalance that can be corrected with daily medication. I really think we need to get off of this thing about who needs meds and who doesn't. It is contributing nothing positive to this board. All we should really need to know is whether WE (individuals..self) need meds. Instead of pointing the finger and deciding who does and doesn't need them, let's just focus on our OWN depression and treatment and talk about that instead. Thanks, Sue C -- Re: Industry's way to get you hooked in order to take your money > Debbie, > > As Dr. Phil would say, you need to get out of that abusive situation. I have been there > & I'm a male. Guest guest
I'm just wondering if certain behaviors are not due to a chemical inbalence but defense mechanisms we learn due to abuse. Lexapro has helped the feelings of hopelessness and crying but the Anxiety issues are still there. Guest guest
I have irritable Bowel Syndrome also and take Celexa which I have been on for several years. I have noticed an improvement in it but I never thought that it could be from the Celexa. I know that Seratonin is manufactured in the gut, but I never made that connectioion but it certainly makes perfect sense to me. Sue C -- Re: Industry's way to get you hooked in order to take your money I dont need to take any drug, but i take lexapro so i can have a life. i take ssri's for irritable bowel syndrome. it's the only drug that works. if i didnt take it i am literally confined to my house, thats how bad it is. it seems i dont have the right amount of seratonin in my gut. i would gladly pay any price for a drug that gave me back my life. colleen
