Changing from Xanax to Lexapro <<Re: Paxil question

I would advise EXTREME caution here....Paxil is a different breed

although still an SSRI. I had a real problem switching from Paxil

and also from Effexor....(Had lots of sides!!!) both of which I

believe should be banned! The withdrawal can take as long as 8 weeks

in some cases and is NOT pleasant! ie: when I switched from Effexor,

I thought I had contracted some rare disease and it lasted 6 weeks

even though I started Lex at the same time!

I would get a second opinion about weaning from Paxil!!!! Lex on the

other hand is relative gentle (for me anyway) and although I still

weaned myself off, It was easy and I was off in 3-4 weeks! Now SSRI

free for about 4 months!

A valuable site for Paxil info is

http://www.quitpaxil.info/

paxil is the ONLY ssri , other than celexa that I have not tried(although my doc

just added some celexa to my lexapro for complicated reasons). One can be on 2

SRRI'S AT ONCE. Many shrinks who are very knowledgeable and at the forefront of

medical literature lower one med, and at the same time raise the other, until

one is off of one drug and then completely on the other. I have done it this way

with all my SSRI'S.

So your friend would lower the paxil, as she adds in lexapro, very gradually

over weeks, until she is off one and on another. I know that paxil is the MOST

DIFFICULT med to get off.I won't LET ANY doctor SWITCH ME FROM ONE MED TO

another without lowering one and raising the other gradually. Luckily my shrink

is a FAN of this method! But one must work with the doc. I doubt dropping paxil

and going straight to lexapro is a good idea. Paxil has far too many scary

withdrawal effects to just drop off of it!

Excellent advice !!!!

Weaning was the only way I would let my doc make a switch!!!! Even

with the weaning...both Paxil and Effexor did their dirt on me!!!!
