I am new to this group and am shocked and appalled that a doctor would put an 8

year old on an anti depressant. Depression at 6? maybe its the parents that need

to be on the drug, this is the saddest thing I ever read, Im sorry. I know I am

new but this is just terrible. I think in cases like this the parents need the

therapy and drugs, NOT the child! Kim

My son has had depression his whole little life (6 years), so after a

consult last week, we decided to give meds a shot. The doc put him on

lex at 5mg, although I cut it to 2.5mg. Within a couple of days, his

behavior was a bit manic, and he had a couple episodes of hitting

himself. He said he looked in the mirror and punched himself 20 times.

He also had a bloody lip, and he told me he punched himself in the mouth

at school after getting in trouble. He also had a very vivid dream of

me killing our 1 year old daughter with nails etc (!!!!) needless to

say, we have stopped lexapro completely. I understand this is not

approved for children, and Im very confused if I should have my daughter

wean from the meds, switch to something else, I just don't know.

Anyways, thanks for " listening " . Im struggling with the meds, and just

wish there was a successful natural approach to all this!

I will admit I'm a little sensitive right now (watching the death of a

20 year dream), but I'm not sure whom I'm most disappointed with...

I suggested some " coping skills " for a child with anxiety on post

#13285 if you are truly interested in " natural " alternatives.

But...I also don't believe in blaming the parent. There is a strong

genetic predisposition for these tendencies and also my son was

traumatized at age 4 that I was not aware of until 10 years later

(despite counseling for every one of those 10 years).

It is wonderful that your daughter could find success so easily, but

learning coping skills would still help in the long run...now that she

can know the difference between anxious feelings and feeling " normal " .

But the potential for a manic episode is quite possible in the case of

your son because there are so few dosing options for this potent drug.

" It's just that you don't have many dosage options with Lexapro. The

same goes with its use in bipolar, making it way too easy to trigger

mania. Although to be fair, fewer people in the bipolar community

reported manias when starting Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) than with

other SSRIs. " ~ http://www.crazymeds.org/lexapro.html

I know antidepressants are highly discouraged these days, but while my

son was struggling through his issues, he had been on desipramine,

immipramine, Zoloft, Trazodone, and Welbutrin. No big benefits, but

no disadvantages either...except some heart concerns on Trazodone.

Well...enough said...if it gets read anyway :P

I have a couple of questions: Why are two of your children having these kinds of

problems? Is this secondary to another condition? I know some of these meds are

not and should not be given to kids. There are others that carry warnings which

you heeded.

I have a real hard time with a doc DX a 6 yr old and an 8 yr old with depression

and/or anxiety. I feel like I'm missing a big chunk of the picture here. Perhaps

more details would help?

Sure it's possible for a 6 year old to be depressed, keeping in mind that

depression is a medical condition, just like diabetes, arthritis, etc., are

medical conditions. There's a genetic element and there's also the possibility

of not enough seratonin in the brain.

I wish SSRI antidepressants had been available when I was a child. I was born

to 2 alcoholic parents who abused me in every way possible because I was born

with a severe skin disease that my parents couldn't cope with. I've been

depressed for about 50 years. I wish I could have been on something for my

depression that started as a child. My parents could have benefitted from

antidepressants too. Today, I have Bi-polar-2 and acute anxiety from the chronic

physical pain I suffered from my skin disease. I've been relative ly depression

free since going on Lex 2 years ago. I honor your courage to face your

childrens' problems and to find solutions. I think that kids can be just as

depressed as adults, either born with the depression or having it be the result

of abuse, neglect or other factors. Kids can be subject to chemical imbalances

the way adults are. Good luck Marie. Sue C From: Marie [mailto:

I dont know, but my step son talked to me about being worried about

death and he was @ 9 at the time I worry about the same thing but im

40 so maybe its just a parent that is " talking " to her child about

whats going on with her and the doctor isnt the right one. I would

maybe go and talk to someone first before meds My 8 yo daughter started
