Subject: Silicone Super Bowl ...

This is really the Super Bowl of the silicone gel implant world ... unfortunately, it's their money against the health of millions of women worldwide that is at stake.

Because FDA safety approval is considered the "gold standard" of safety ... whether or not Inamed (who I consider to be the Dow's stepson ... remember, Don McGhan worked for years at Dow) wins approval will affect the international community of women too.

Today's papers carried a press release from Dow itself ... which contained perhaps the most unsettling truth for them:

http://www.detnews.com/2003/business/0310/13/business-296088.htmDow Corning could gain if breast implants OK'd

EXCERPT: Should the FDA allow reintroduction of the implants, a Dow Corning spokesman says it would become difficult for people to win lawsuits over them, said Dow Corning spokesman Wiggins.

Under the plan, Dow Corning set aside $400 million to manage claims for people who chose to sue instead of settle. "If the device is brought back on the market and FDA changes (its) position, I would think it would be very difficult to litigate," Wiggins told the Midland Daily News.

New Data Responds to FDA Concerns About Breast Implant Patients; ASAPS Releases Findings to be Presented in Testimony at FDA Hearings

EXCERPT:Dr. Young's surveys, which were funded by the nonprofit Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF), were conducted via the independent web site, ImplantInfo.com.

Note from Ilena: implantinfo.com is NOT independent ... it is a front for the PS's and the Manufacturers ... in fact, just this week I posted the press release from Dr. Zuckerman (below) ... and it was immediately expunged from their webpage.

If you wish to vote on their poll about whether to give FDA approval ... please go to:

http://www.implantinfo.com/pollcenter

You might wish to visit their Q & A board ... be careful tho ... they often send viruses to posters there. These women who come there for help get sales pitches.

EXCERPT: An FDA advisory committee will hold a two-day hearing, starting Tuesday, on an application by Inamed Corp. of Santa Barbara, Calif., to sell a new silicone-gel-filled breast implant.

"Basically, it's the same implant we've had on the market since the late `70s," says JoAnn Kuhne, the company's senior director of clinical and regulatory affairs. "There have been some manufacturing efficiencies and minor improvements, but the silicone chemistry is the same."

Some groups are outraged that doctors and breast implant manufacturers are adopting "a woman's choice" as almost a slogan for getting the silicone devices back on the market.

Note from Ilena: This I read all over the newsgroups where I post factual information ... the silicone makers have borried this highly successful campaign from their cousins, the Tobacco Barons ... who used it years ago to hook millions of women on tobacco.

More excerpts: "By 10 years, most women are going to have at least one broken implant and they are going to have to have at least one more surgery," says Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Policy Research for Women & Families, a Washington-based advocacy group that has questioned the safety of implants.

If you have not yet signed the very important petition to tell the FDA that it is premature to get safety approval, please do so now. It has been wonderful to see so many women from our support group and their families express their deep concerns:

Best news article yet, in my opinion, is this one from Dr. Zuckerman:

If you could forward it to your local newspapers with your own story, that would be excellent!

I wish the very best to the brave women speaking this week on behalf of women everywhere ... and the doctors and scientists on our side willing to step forward. Bravo to them all.

With love from Ilena
