I'd say take them when it would be time for your next Effexor to minimize any withdrawal symptoms...

Our son takes Lexapro for his OCD. It has worked very well for

him. He is 12 years old (115 pounds), and currently takes 15 mg.

He started on Paxil when he was 7, and had may negative side

effects. He switched to Celexa (which worked well), and then to

Lexapro when it was first introduced on the market. He does not

have any side effects (that I am aware of)with the Lexapro, and at

this time he does not have any OCD symptoms - a true blessing!

Hi Larissa -

I haven't had any nausea starting up the Lexapro. I am starting on 5 mg,

and I take it at night. I tried once before to get on it, and I had headaches,

and felt a bit jittery, but, this time I have had no problems at all. Maybe

I was just anxious the first time...lol.

Hopefully, it will be smooth sailing for you!

I finally decided to start the Lexapro. I did a lot of research online this

morning and it seems the pros outweigh the cons. I fear the nausea that may come

with it to the point of vomiting, this scares the hell out of me. I can deal

with the other side effects but nausea and vomiting, forget it. On Sept. 1st, Im

going to take 1/4 of a pill for a couple weeks. Baby steps I guess you'd call

it. I think I'll take it in the morning with milk and crackers. If I seem to do

ok with this small dose, I will go to a half, 5mg at the 3rd week and see how I

do on 5. How does this sound to you all? Larissa

Larissa,

This sounds like a good plan for " weaning on " the Lex. One recommendation based

on my experiences though...I too was afraid of nausea, etc. and have done much,

much better taking the Lex right before bed. Any uneasy stomach feelings would

have taken place during the night, for the most part. I have a very weak

stomach but this method has worked great for me!

My doc wanted me to take it too but after doing some research on it and

reading that weight gain, nightmares and puking could be a side effect I

said no. I have wanted to start taking it for my mood swings but after

seeing this post I won't be taking it. LOL I have a MAJOR phobia about

puking. I refuse to do and have not done it in over 20 years now, I am 28

now. It's so bad that I would rather literally die than to puke. That's

pretty bad. My husband tells me that it's not really that bad but for me it

is!

It does not have the same side effects for everyone. I have not gained any

weight, had any nightmares or vomiting. Please consider lex or another drug if

you are seriously unable to handle your mood swings.

The moods have actually improved. I just changed some stressors and through

counceling, I learned how to deal with things better. I've been on

medications since I had my daughter. I was hospitalized for attempted

suicide at 21 weeks of pregnancy. I was diagnosed as being bipolar w/

suicidal tendencies. I was put on Zoloft and stayed on it for little less

than a year. When I got pregnant with my son in 2002, they put me on it

again but it made me too sick. I tried Celexa, no good. Wellbutrin did not

work either too well. It did take the edge off of the moods. My doc wanted

me to try the Lexapro. I just dont know about it.

interesting . I upped my dose only one mg and a barfed that day outta no

place. course could be anxiety as much as anything. I actually have lost

weight.. I am now happy to say. not much but about 5 lbs. Keep on

excersizing is the answer I think. I am forced to make a 2/3 mile walk

everyother day despite agoraphobia.. I think this is helping.

wow ,

I am sorry you have been through so much. Listen, I am terrified of all

these drugs .. and I am highly drug sensitive. .. lexapro ..I really

think it may have the lowest rate of side effects. If you think you need

medication it is worth a try.. I get liquid stuff and I started on one

milligram. now I am up to 5 ..you could go onto that slow and the liquid

gives you total control. - wishing you all the best - hugs ...many hugs-

i have to agree with su,

Now I do not seem to be helped by the lexapro because I cannto get up to

a therapudic dose. ( Sue how many mg are you on?) Yes of course most

people are inclined to post about problems rather than success stories.

The ones that are feeling better are usually out doing something thus

have no need to post . Su thanks for the positive posting. Though I do

not seem to be getting any benifit from the RX at this time ...I keep on

trying to up the dose.. and I want to say AGAIN I am very drug sensitive

but seem to have no side effects ( though when I first went on my anxiety

level went way up..but that may have been my mind more than the drug ) .

WHen things are in a tailspin anythign is worth a try. I think lexapro is

probably a good drug to try if you are going to try any of them. Alison

Hi Sue,

My sentiments exactly. I started on 10 mg of Lexapro, gradually having it

titrated up to 40 mg/day....a massive amount.(the highest that can be

prescribed)

In conjuntion with that I am also on Remeron, 250 mg/day, and Wellbutrin 200 mg

sustained release/ day.

I have not so much as a headache, nausea......nothing. Weight gain, yes.

My feelings is that if one concentrates on the negative POSSIBLE adverse effects

of a med., sure enough you'll have these side effects. That's the way our brain

works.

SO>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> make a decision and either take lexapro or stop whining . I.

personally, cannot afford to be with (or hear) negative people, so I try at all

cost to avoid them.

Lexapro has saved my life.

Oh, I am so glad that you sent in this post, Sue C! I guess I have been a

little frustrated with the recent " I had such a bad reaction that I had to go to

the ER " scare messages. How can a post like that possibly help someone on this

board? There is no way to say that a night of vomiting was even related to the

meds yet countless people are reading it and are being frightened away from the

very real possibility of improving their lives dramatically. I think we owe it

to each other on this board to state our personal experiences in a way that is

sensitive and caring to the new person coming to this board looking for support.

I too am a real worrier when it comes to starting meds and seem to be very

sensitive to the drugs, especially initially. I worried mostly that I would

have GI effects and that I wouldn't be able to continue on with the daily

demands of my life, at least until my body was used to the drug. Yes, I had

some uneasiness in my stomach, kind of like a vague recollection of morning

sickness. No vomiting, no real nausea that made me feel like I needed to stay

home. The worst thing I felt was kind of a spacey, foggy-head sensation for a

few days. Totally tolerable. I have taken several of the SSRI's and Lex, by

far, caused the least amount of side effects. I am forever grateful that I

wasn't scared off by the people who carelessly and insensitively over-state and

over-attribute bodily symptoms to the Lexapro.

Oh, and by the way, mentioned having a real fear of vomiting; I used

to as well until I started taking the Lexapro but now that very phobia is under

control because I started taking the Lex! I never knew that life without the

burdens of fears and constant anxieties could exist for me but I am happier than

I thought possible.
