AIDS Organizations Interested in US Global AIDS Activities

RE: Request For Your Perspective on Role of US Groups in Global AIDS

Activities

Date: January 22, 2001

Colleagues-

For some months a small group of organizations have been wrestling with the

question of how, or if, US AIDS groups could effectively involve themselves

in global AIDS activities. This discussion consists of an in-depth dialog

among a diverse group of US institutions, half being ASOs and half being

potential funding/facilitator organizations. We have also sought input from

southern nation ASOs and have been able to consult in-depth with

approximately twenty organizations.

The dialog has been quite passionate and resulted in unusual preliminary

conclusions. We think it would be of interest not only to US institutions,

but also to organizations in other nations that are grappling with the

challenge of international AIDS work and relationships. The dialog to-date

is

reflected in two reports, each about 15 pages in length.

The Global AIDS Action Network would very much value the observations of

other organizations, particularly those working on international linkages or

advocacy on global AIDS policy. We will incorporate your perspective into

the

final report. We will also send everyone who is interested the final

consultation report. (No one is quoted by name in the report as we hope to

encourage groups that have strong opinions to feel free in expressing their

comments.) We attach a summary of the preliminary conclusions as well as

some

quotations of participants to give you a feel of the dialog.

To receive a copy of the first two reports simply email GAAN at

globalaids@... or phone us at 510-601-8901. The formal title of the

project is: " The Role of US AIDS Groups in Global AIDS Issues and

Activities-An In-depth Stakeholder Consultation "

Thank you for your attention to this request and we hope to hear from you.
