As I mentioned at the meeting, I ratherthink it would be good to have some more international representation, perhaps somebody from South or Southeast Asia? Or somebody with that background? Has anybody looked into asking Abraham Verghese, for instance, to serve on the board? It may not work out, but it's just a suggestion. Sandhya Physicians for Human Rights

This is a great list! I have 3 comments. 1. I would caution you against too large a board as it takes a great deal of staff time to service a board and the larger it is the more work it is. 2. Secondly, I can't speak about others on the list, but in regards to the artists you included, at least as recently as a few weeks ago, it seems they have never had any contact with GAA or its key leaders. So to start by asking them to sit on the board is kinda like asking someone to marry you before you have even been out on a date. Maybe someone out there would do that, but not generally folks who are substantive activists or seasoned philanthropists, which are the only artists who would really add value. Of course it all depends who asks, etc. 3. Think about putting people on the board who have the time and commitment to really work, raise money, etc. Folks who lend credibility but don;t have the time to actually work are better to have on an advisory board. Best of luck, Sharon Gelman Executive Director Artists for a New South Africa

Might Bill Gates or other philanthropists concerned with health issues be invited? Perhaps some US senators from both sides of the aisle? Kerry, Feingold, and Feinstein, of course, are all leaders on global AIDS; I've heard that McCain is becoming interested as well. Helms is concerned but tricky politically. Holbrooke might be another option

Good luck,

I do not think you have tapped into the depth of the US AIDS movement though. Are you open to leaders from other AIDS groups like NAPWA, NMAC, AAAPTI, etc.? Boneberg
