The federal budget process briefly works like this:

Budget Process Step

Deadline

President submits proposed budget

1st Monday in February

Congress prepares Budget Resolution

April 1st

Congress approves Budget Resolution

April 15th

Congress develops, debates and approves 13 Appropriations Bills

June 30th

President signs all 13 Appropriations Bills to complete the federal budget process

October 1st
