Just have to tell someone--I took my Anatomy and Physiology final today,

over 27 chapters...and I got a B!!!!! I'm sooooo relieved. If I hadn't

passed this final or gotten at least a C in this class, I'd be out of

the OTA program. With my marriage dissolving, I need to finish my degree

so I can support my girls. What a relief to be finished with A & P!!!

Thanks for listening!!

Colleen:

These are typical of many of the questions my soap students ask. This is

what I tell them.

1. There are no true HP recipes. They are just CP recipes that are cooked.

Some people find that they design special recipes to HP, but you will find

that these specially designed recipes will CP just as well.

You did not get mashed potatoes (lumps etc.) because the recipe was not

correct. You got mashed potatoes because you cooked the soap for too long!

You went past the point of no return. That batch could be saved, but I'm

afraid that you'd need a few more batches under your belt to get a soap you

could give or sell to others. Just my opinion.

2. Most HP will cook in a preheated crock pot within one hour on low. Be

sure the pot is preheated for 10 or 15 minutes. The traced soap will begin

to get vaseline like around the outer edges in another 15 or so minutes. Do

not stir, just wait for the whole pot to turn to gel. THEN stir and test.

If you let the soap go past vaseline you've cooked too much.

3. HPing allows me to fill orders within a shorter timeframe. I also can

keep a steadier inventory if I don't need to wait 4 weeks to place a

fragrance into stock.

4. I do not make handmilled or rebatched soaps. I hate the process, I can

only

make shrunken head bars and they look gross!

I hope you take these remarks in the friendly tone they are intended. Many

of us do CPHP and have differing opinions. We all are telling what works for

us.

Enjoy the weekend! We are going to Clifton Park for a wedding - friend of DD

. I'll be gone for two days but will catch up on what's going on Friday

night.

Hugs,

Lizz

I think I know..... DON'T DISCOUNT THE WATER! You are going to cook off the

water anyway and you need the water molecules to interact with the sodium

hydroxide molecules and to carry them to all the acid molecules to form soap.

The water makes it possible for the lye to reach the oils and turn them into

soap. Not enough water and the lye doesn't reach the acids. You may or may

not get lye pieces in the soap, but you will surely not get the same high

quality soap that you would get if all the lye was able to reach the oils.

Of course, any oils that do not bind with the lye/water will remain oils that

we refer to as superfat.

Does this make any sense???

Hey Colleen, what happened to batch #1? You know, thats where the stick

blender comes in handy, just about the time you get sick of standing over

the sink stirring soap. I'll try and help you out with your questions...

The recipes can be the same, but I believe you discount the water for cphp.

I forget off top of my head how much tho, cphp has been much talked about

lately on the lists im on.

Question #2... for CPHP Some say at 200 degree for an hour, some say less

than that for two hours give or take.

Question #3... I havnt seen one good reason to do a hp over cp. I believe

it will still need a cure time to become milder. Sure it may harden faster

cuz youve cooked off the water or whatever but then you have to fight to

make it look almost smooth.

Question #4... Im my first year of soaping I did all rebatch or handmilling.

I finally got tired of spending twice the time on the soap than it had to.

I have a freind who swears by it, so its a personal choice. brb kids are

yelling...

Ok... well good Colleen! Glad you are trying soap from scratch! I know I

totaly love it, but I just do CP with an occasional dabble in hp and mp and

only rebatch if I absolutly have to (can you tell I dont like doing that?

lol)

The whole process is way cool!

ttya!

Shaye

I DID IT!!!

I made soap! Well CPHP soap anyway. I am certainly an mp soaper at

heart. Standing there staring at a soap pot drove me crazy. Especially

since the first batch I tried Wednesday had to go in the trash! But

Thursday's batch, I believe, is going to be just fine. And now I've got

questions!!!

1) Does the recipe you use have to be specifically for hot process? Can

you use a cold process recipe? The first batch I made was a cp recipe,

and that came out looking like a nasty, lumpy, clumpy tapioca. The

second batch was an hp recipe, and so far it's just a little soft, but

it keeps getting harder. (Of course I'm sure it'd be fine if I kept my

fingers off from it!!!!)

2) How long is the actual (average, typical) cook time when making cp

soap? I am very impatient and hate to wait, but there are some recipes

I want to try.

3) For those of you that make hp instead of cp, why? Is it because the

cure time is shorter? I'm just curious.

4) Does anyone make hand-milled soaps? What are the benefits of this

process over the others?

That should keep all of you busy answering me for a little while! At

least I hope I will get some answers. :)

Even though my first batch died, and my second took about 2 hours to

cook, I can see where this can be addictive. There's just some strange

rush you get out of putting oils & such into a pot and having it turn

into soap!

Thanks for the info Shaye!

I don't know what happened to the first batch. I stirred everything together so

it was blended. When I went back to check on it there was " soap " on top and a

layer of liquid on the bottom of the crock. I kept stirring that back

together, but it would keep separating out. I finally got sick of it, turned

the crock off, and when it cooled it was how I described before. Yucky!!!

Garbage man got that batch!

Anyone know how to discount the water from a cp recipe to an hp recipe? Maybe I

had too much water in it. Who knows!

CP is on my list to try next, so be prepared for more questions!!! :)
