Hi, Carol...

I am sue you have tried most of these, but just in case you haven't, I

will run down the list of things that I have used...

Cortisone cream (OTC)

Cornstarch powder

some hand creams....Keri Original works best for me

J & J Baby lotion

Skin So Soft

Benadryl Anti-Itch Cream

Triple Antibiotic ointment!!

Desitin (messy, but sometimes works well)

and....Miconazole cream in a tube (which is really a vaginal yeast

infection treatment) but I find it works well, especially if some of the

itching is in or near skin folds, but I have used it elsewhere with good

success

I hope that you can soon alleviate this problem for your husband.

Remember, no matter what you put on, it will take 5-20 minutes before

the itching stops and if you scratch it during that time, the itching

just starts again.... sometimes putting something on and covering the

area with cotton clothing helps...

Hi Carol (and Merill),

Pat has used many of the same things for itching, but

has found the Miconazole (Monistat)cream to work the

best for him.

Please, please, please beg your hubby not to scratch.

Rub if necessary, but don't scratch. Pat scratched

his legs (even in his sleep) so bad that he got an

infection in one of them that went into the chin bone.

He was hospitalized for several days while undergoing

intervaneous antibiotics

Along with all of the creams that were mentioned,

sometimes just icing the itchy area helps. Pat would

sometimes put on the cream and then lay a bag of

frozen peas or corn (which can then be put back in the

freezer when finished)across his legs until the

itching let up.

Hi Carol,

I forgot to mention that Pat is also taking

prescription strength Tavist for his itching. It is

actually a decongestant, but it does provides him some

relief. Your hubby will have to check with his doctor

to see how he feels about it as any oral meds have to

go through the liver.

Dear Twinkletoes,

I have had Harrington surgery and afterwards revision for flatback. After

the first surgery I had the same problem with an area on my back that was

numb and itched: I couldn't relieve the itch either. This has persisted

even since the revision surgery so I guess there was some permanent

" skin-nerve " damage. It's a very wierd and also frustrating situation. I

guess we can be grateful that the itch is on our backs and not someplace

more embarrassing.....

I am also having trouble with itching. I was just trying to explain it to my

husband tonight. I had an anterior approach surgery done, so my scar is on my

ribs. The last few days I have been " itching " over my rib cage area. I just had

the surgery in June, so it is still tender, but I really want to scratch away.

However, when I do lightly scratch, it just feels wierd. Now I can tell my

husband that other people experince the itching and I am not crazy

I can remember having 'the itch'! For me it was near the top of my scar which

radiated out to the left around my shoulder blade. Some times the itch was so

intense that I would describe it as more of a burning feeling under the skin. I

used to hold an ice pack there when it got so bad. That was about the only thing

that seemed to help. I was told it was nerves knitting together again. It

disappeared completely after 3 years, although the numbness is still there

I've had several surgeries in addition to my spine surgery. I think the

itching thing happened after each surgery. I still, on rare occasions,

have the itch that can't be relieved on my abdomen. Luckily, it never

lasts long.

your reply about the itching! It's great to know I'm not crazy about

this itch that can't be scratched! And, yes, , we can be very

grateful that the itch is in a socially acceptable place! And, it's

good to know that I may get feeling back in my numb spots. Bonnie, I

have had two children. The first one was born when my largest curve was

50, the second when it was 55 degrees. My COPD has claimed 50% of my

lungs for more than thirty years. So, I'd say, want to get pregnant, I

can see no reason why not to. You are very young. After you have all

the kids you want, right up to age 53 (as I am 53) you can have

surgery. OR, you can have the curve(s) corrected now and get a MUCH

better correction and wait a few years to have a baby. Pregnancy and

delivery will go fine.

Der , hour child had scoli surgery for a 50 degree THIS MONTH and is

going back to school THIS SOON?! That is amazing!

Dear Dunlap, I am fused T2 to L5, with only one disc left in

the lumbar area. My surgery was 7/26/02 and really can't tell you

anything about fusion disease (pseudoarthosis). I was told I would need

to have the last disc fused in about 10 years, or at least eventually.

For me, scratching doesn't really do anything, it feels weird to scratch and

not have surface feeling, I have found that pressure on the area rather than

scratching helps, having someone push on the area, or standing against a

corner and pressing against it.

That's awful that you have had to undergo the itching for so long. I

wouldn't be nervous to try the Lexapro, it's a relatively safe drug. It does

take a while to get the optimal effects, so give it a chance. Best of luck to

That's really interesting. I have itching. And I feel I have mild OCD of the

obssessive thoughts variety. They think my itching is actually anxiety but I

don't and haven't really felt all that anxious. Depressed and didn't realise

it but not all that anxious this last time around. The itching is terrible.

Not dry skin though that can make it worse. I start to itch and break out in

these patches of itty bitty hives.

It seems to slowly be getting better. I'm having to use less Atarax as the

weeks go by. I'm down to, at the most, twice a week now.

For some, Lex is a great drug. For others...not so great. These kinds of

drugs are the try it and see variety. And if Lex *doesn't* work there are

others in the family of AD's that will. At this point you have little to

lose and everything to gain. :-)

Ya know I am a very clean woman...years ago I itched for six months and it about

drove me crazy...after dermatologist, doctors.....one doctor told me I had

scabes...I did not know what that was....the itching was worse at night after

hot shower and getting in warm covers....he told me it is from dirty places like

even touching a grocery cart......O man, he gave me lotion that I put on for 2

nights and had to was everthing I owned....I did this on 2 seperate occasions in

a year..I don't think I got rid of them after the first few applications and

washing everything i owned so I retreated myself because I had the lotion left

over.....then it all went away.....ya might want to do some research on

that....just an option....but my friend itched everynight before her lexaspro

kicked in.....she took one valium every night for a month and that made the

itching stop and and she told me she would sleep great. So those are 2 ideas to

check on....good luck let us know...Debbie

i have been on lexapro for almost two years and i have a big problen with my

back itching, i have tried lotions and everything. sometimes if i take a

claritin it will stop for a week or so.

I, too, have been experiencing crazy itching on the Lexapro (I'm on 10 mg and

then 200

mg Wellbutrin). It usually happens at night and often prevents me from

sleeping. I have

tried anti-itch lotions, none of them work. The only thing that does work is

1/2 mg

Klonopin. Of course, it makes me fall asleep about 30 minutes later, but I do

notice that

right before I go to sleep, the itching has ceased. Maybe it's just nerves?

I've told my

psychiatrist and general practitioner, but neither had any answers. I might ask

my new

doctor about Claritin, thanks for the advice. If anyone knows any other " quick

fixes " to the

itching, please let me know. I can't keep on taking Klonopins as they seem to

make me

even sleepier the next day.

I am by no means an expert, but my husband, Hugs, just finished

treatment. He had a really bad stage of iching, he looked like a

monkey walking around the house scratching all the time. His doctor

prescribed some pills for it .. It made him more ill, so he stopped

taking them, but 4 you they might work....I could not tell you what

there called as he tossed them. So in the mean time he used a lotion

high in vitamin E and also took the vitamin E capsuls. He also use a

mild soap. This does pass in time. His legs were so raw, they looked

like a sun burn. Eventually the iching passed, and his legs healed.

I'm sure some one here can offer some relief to you problem....

WHen my husband was actually on the treatment, he used coconut oil

(food grade)- he used it up to 3 times a day and always used it at

least once a day. He said it helped tremendously. Also he always

drank at least a gallon-many times more- of water a day He also

took and still takes fish oil (we got ours thru Nordic Naturals),

milk thistle, vit C and a multivit without iron. I watched labels to

find foods that had the least amount of iron in them so it wouldn't

build up for him. He also ate salads (a BIG change-which

unfortunately hasn't lasted) and fruit and more fresh vegs). Hope

HI ,

I too have that awful itching that sends me over the

edge! It is terrible. I stay up at night itching!

I scratch in meetings at work. My doctor gave me a

prescription for a steroid creme. .05% which helps,

and .1% which is really strong and helps a lot! (twice

as strong as the .05%)

Gosh, I could not live without that oitment! I

scratched myself raw!

My skin is awful looking. That itch is quite

painful! and it is on most of my body! The itch

started with my first injection and has not let up. I

have done 15 injections.

I was going to get a steroid shot, (instant relieve),

but my white blood count is too low so I cannot take

steroids.

I had horrrrrible itching too! I'm telling you the only

relief I found was an 'inside-out job' meaning - starting to

clean up the liver / gallbladder & colon with supplements and

herbs. The liver filers all the blood - and toxins/poisons

build up and if they have nowhere to go/exit they literally

come out your skin = itching! I started with Antioxidants to

clean up the liver / added fresh lemon to my drinking water /

and then Artichoke Clusters pushed the bile out've my

Gallbladder -

and Digestive Enzymes w/ Probiotics took the stress off my liver

and started to clean up my bowels - and there's a products

called

" Super Colon Cleanse " you can find in most Health Food Stores

and its a fantastic colon cleanse. It takes acouple weeks to

really kick in but the itching will clear up and NOT come back

if you then continue with the antioxidants & digestive Enzymes.

In the meantim I would wet some MSM (organic sulpher) and dab

it on the open red spots on my legs = RELIEF from the itching so

I could sleep.

Insane Itching,

You could soak or apply a paste with baking soda in it mixed with oatmeal flour. Make oatmeal flour by blending half cup at a time in your blender plain oatmeal. If you either soak in a tub with that or put paste on the itchy spots, then it should relieve it.

I have used oatmeal flour with mosquito bites, poison ivy and chicken pox with happy results. They sell it in $5 packages and call it aveeno. Soaking in tub for 25-30 minutes seems to work the best.

I was reading the recent thread on itching/fungus with a great deal of interest.
