hi tom in pa

i guess we do think alike. ill be starting to stain and waterproof my

deck on tuesday. id start tomorrow but mon wed and fri i have a sixty

mile round trip to the hospital for the cardiac rehab.

by the way ill be 59 on the 14th of dec.

i am on 400mgs of amioderone. one side effect i have noticed is

occasional lightheadedness, and not very severe or longlasting. and one

other is the feeling of panic in my gut, only at rest and mostly when

watching tv. and damn, i hate that.

this morning i was down at our marina for cleanup day. most are aware of

my problem so they let me be in charge of the fire. the men and women cut

up the logs and branches, and gathered up the leaves and brought them up to

the parking lot for me to burn. i had the best job in the house. and i

parked my truck about 100 feet away and all morning i walked back and forth

between my truck and the fire as often as i could.

thurs i done what i thought was good. i did over 6/10ths of a mile and

included a few hills while at it. i was proud of myself doing that. i

plan to be able to do a mile by june 1 and i hope to jog a bit to one

day. i plan to go out kicking and screaming, not meaning to repeat myself.

i am amazed at what the people in the zapper club know about their

illnesses and medicines. im beginning to think my docs sent me home to

die. nobody seems to want to take the time and explain things to me. i

was told i have congestive heart failure and i just about had to pull teeth

or punch someone to find out that my e f is down to 10. if that is in

fact what they did, they are in for one heck of surprise [i HOPE]

hahahahaaaa. i still dont know what the diagnosis of my arrythmias are

and i have no idea when i next see the cardiologist. seems his group

doesnt schedule appointments in advance. they call you when it is time to

come it. i wonder if that is because they dont like the missed

appointments of those of us that dont make it. as you can see, i trust

doctors about as much as i trust lawyers, hahahahaa.

i have noticed that when i left the hospital i could not get a deep

breath. now i can for most of the day and it is only in the evening that

i have trouble with a deep breath. i suspect that will improve if i keep

at it.

guess ive bored you long enough. i might also mention that being alone

dealing with this and being a long way from the hospital was terrifying at

first. but like someone else in the club said. ive had it and not going

to let this damn problem slow me down. i even hesitated to put my boat in

the water this year but it is going in the end of next week.

your birthday is what day in dec???? and you are right i do think we

are thinking along the same lines here. ill fall over if you tell me you

are a retired police officer.

HI Zach

How old is Dallas now?? And his sister??

Ladies:

Dallas was 17 months when he walked. Interestingly, he did not acknowledge

his younger sister as being a " person " until she walked.

Hey this one was easy! I've done 's tapes and I mentioned before I am a klutz! I trip all over the living room doing those dance steps. I used the same tape for an entire month and never got the steps down right. LOL! The Sansone tape was very easy to follow, eventually I'll get to the one mile mark. This might be something I can stick with. I bought the set at Wal Mart last weekend, it came with the ball weights. I didn't think it did because the box wasn't big enough, but they are flat and you fill them with water. My sister bought the same set off of Ebay for $25 + shipping, mine was $19.95.

Goal for now is to get to where the scale can read my weight!

That's awesome woman! Hey, we have to start somewhere and you should be

proud of yourself for taking the first step. Did you like the tape? I

haven't seen one of hers yet and the library doesn't carry them.

It is so true that age of walking has nothing to do with cognitive

development. was much slower with sitting up and walking than with many

other things. Before he sat up he would lie on his stomach and turn the

pages of a book with his thumb. Actually hold the pages back with his thumb and

release them one at a time. He read words on cards before he walked.

He walked around things for a long time and took a step or two between

people but didn't seem to have any idea about really walking. Then one day

he stood up in the middle of the floor and walked away. You just never know.

Like any kids, ours can surprise you. Jessie

My Bethany is 15 months old and is so on the verge of walking. She was

maybe a little further than you describe Abbie when she was 12 months as

she was pulling up on the furniture before then. However her PT said

she was using her arms to pull herself up rather than her arms to

balance and her legs to push her to stand. (hope that makes sense)

Sounds like Abbie just needs more practice - does she have a push toy to

walk behind? If you don't have one yet I recommend the little tykes one

that has a brake on it. You can set a brake on the front wheels so the

toy doesn't go so fast that the child falls on their face. What we did

with Bethany was to have her pull up on the push toy and then we'd move

it an inch or two at a time - let her feel when she's leaning forward -

then when she feels she is leaning a little too far she will move a

foot. Now Bethany walks all over the room with her push toy - she even

turns it a bit to get around stuff. It'll come in time. I know I have

been anxious for months as our son Tyler was walking the day he turned 9

months.

Oh - and to help her learn to walk sideways along the couch (or cruise)

find something she really loves and put it just out of her reach. For

us it was the real phone - or one of the remote controls. Toys just

didn't do it. If she started to bend down to crawl we'd actually put it

within reach till she stood up again - then once she stood up we'd put

it a hair closer than it was before. Make sense?

Just in case you're interested in that walker I linked it from

Amazon.com...just so you can see what they look like. I got Bethany's

at Toys R US.

Hope all this helps!

Walking

~Sigh~ Grandma addicted to norms here....

When could a child with DS expected to walk, more or less, given the

abilities described below?

Abbie is a week shy of 12 months old. For a couple months, she has been

able to stand with support, e.g. at the coffee table playing with toys.

She will let go of the table with one hand and turn around to look at

someone coming into the room. She will even let go with both hands and

bang her toys together, still leaning against the table with her belly,

but not holding on. She pulls herself to standing if she holds your

hands, but doesn't do it on furniture. If you hold her hands while she

stands, she likes it a lot but has no clue about moving her legs. She

can stand that way even if you hold her hands only very lightly, like

she's using them just for a little balance, not support.

~Sigh again~ It's a good thing I'm her grandma and not her mom because

if I were with her all the time I'd probably be always pushing, pushing,

pushing... or maybe not pushing, but urging, urging, urging....

Her Early Intervention therapist has set as one of her goals in the next

6 months, walking sideways holding onto furniture. That means, I guess,

that she doesn't expect that Abbie might walk alone by 18 months. I

don't know what the expectation is for independent steps. Her dad (our

son) walked at 11 months, his 2 sisters at 9 and 10 months. Her cousin

(dad's sister's daughter), non-DS, didn't walk till 15 months (she's 5

now and runs, roller-skates, etc., and it doesn't matter a bit when she

walked). 12-15 months is considered " average " for the " average " child,

but as we know, Abbie is not " average. "

OTOH, what child is?

Do you really want her to walk so soon? LOL...once our kids walk, there is no

stopping them ;) Some kids with DS to walk much earlier and some walk much

later (this is in no way related to cognitive development).

The average age for a child to walk with DS is about 24 months. pulled

himself up to a standing position right before he turned one. It was still

another 10 months before he took independent steps

Do you have Pat Winders book, Gross Motor Skills and Children with Down

syndrome? Pat is the expert in this area ( was one of her patients) and

she stressed using the natural environment for physical therapy equipment (i.e.

the couch). is on page 147 of that book - instead of walking on a

balance beam, we worked on walking on landscaping timber at his school.

Gross motor was 's strength. He's my only ch ild who climbed out of

their crib and he did that at 19 months! Fine motor was his biggest weakness.

I remember working so hard on pincer grasp and that remained a goal for a long

time. I'm proud to say that he can pick up a tiny ant between his thumb and

finger with no problem (he also chases me with the squashed bugs) now.

How is the weather up in the mountains tonight?

Hi,

My son didn't walk until he was 3. I was sure it was all my fault and I just

wasn't trying hard enough to teach him. looking back I saw that he was not

ready to walk (physically wise). When he was ready off he went.

he learned to walk just before he started preschool.

actually the norm for " typical " children can be up to 18 months without a

problem being worried about...... though it sounds like your little

granddaughter is well on her way.... as to the actual time frame who knows

I think the fact that Abbie is pulling herself up and standing at 12 months

is remarkable. Micah walked at about 2 and the PT said this was very good,

that she foun on " average " downs children begin at about two and a half. So I

would say Abbie is doing amazingly well!!!
