Guest guest
Hi Melisa, I think it would be fabulous to combine Life Lift with a Pilates workout. You can combine Life Lift with any exercise, but I really like the Pilates exercises. Some would be easier to do if you do the Life Lift breathing first and then the exercises, but some would be great to combine each stretch with the Life Lift breaths. Guest guest
Melisa, I not sure what book you are referring to but I love Pilates and think it combines very nicely with LifeLift. I was doing Pilates before I found LL. I had tried BF and O. I KNEW getting oxygen was important. My big problem was my back. BF sent my back into spasms, so did O but I never really could master O anyhow. That's why I turned to the protected supine workout on a performer. But it was not a problem with LL. I have said before that I think the exhale is as important if not more so than the inhale. If you don't really empty you can't get a full inhale. I think that is one of the benefits of the LL pause before inhale. You get really empty, pause then you just have to go for broke on the refill. I have just been reading Pilates, Return to Life Through Contrology. Here's a quote that backs that up: " Lazy breathing converts the lungs, figuratively speaking, into a cemetery for the deposition of diseased, dying, and dead germs as well as supplying an ideal haven for the multiplication of other harmful germs. Therefore, above all, learn how to breathe correctly. " SQUEEZE " EVERY ATOM OF AIR FROM YOUR LUNGS UNTIL THEY ARE ALMOST AS FREE OF AIR AS IS A VACUUM. Stand erect and observe how your lungs will automatically completely refill themselves with fresh air. " Pilates also teaching you to use your breath with your body movements. That is use the abs instead of stressing the back as I was. They say your muscles create a memory so that you just naturally begin to use them correctly in conjunction with one another. Hope this helps, Kate :~) pilates > Hey guys- > I was just wondering if any of you have read the Pilates Body. I saw it > in B and N and wondered if anybody had tried it. Guest guest
Pliates IS a fad, and unfortunately is seems as though it's here to stay for a while. Don't get me wrong - doing Pilates beats the hell out of doing nothing, and I'm sure there are a few exercises unique to Pilates that might be pretty good. Just like yoga has some unique exercises that are pretty good. The question to ask is what Pilates exercises beat free weights in strength development. Like I said, there might be a couple unique exercises, but if you had to choose one method over another (Pilates vs. free weights) I'd like to hear the argument for Pilates. The fact that Rosemary is seeing Pilates studios all over West L.A. isn't surprising. In L.A., the latest exercise trend is always more desirable than the most productive method. BTW, I gotta say I'm a little embarrassed that there was a Pilates article in Milo Burkhardt Strength and Conditioning Coach UC Irvine Rosemary Wedderburn wrote... I'd like the list's " take " on this technique. I've sort of dismissed it because it seems to be the latest fad. If you drive up Wilshire Blvd through Santa and Brentwood, you'll see a " Pilates " practioner every couple of blocks. This sort of thing always makes me wonder if those who are offering their services really know what they're doing or they're just getting on the latest bandwagon. It reminds me of each cardio craze, like Tae Bo, that blow in and out of gyms on a constant basis. Then lo and behold, there was an article in the December 2000 MILO written by a man who is a serious trainer who said that Pilates has helped him immensely. He talks about body balance, such as a chiropractor or PT would notice. He does state in the last paragraph that ph Pilates, the developer, didn't believe in weight training because he thought it made people musclebound. But the author feels that the two compliment one another. Since this article appeared in MILO, it got my attention. Any comments? If you think it's worth doing, then how does one go about finding a decent instructor? Rosemary
Guest guest
Pilates is a great form of exercise, strengthens the core muscles in the trunk of the body. I don't see any reason why you couldn't do it as well as the BFL workouts. Bill P. always says that anyone who is already active (plays sports recreationally) should continue whatever activity they are already doing. Just be careful not to overtrain. Guest guest
Kim, I haven't done Pilates in awhile, but I really like the results I got from it when I was doing it. I've heard a lot of positive comments about the Winsor Pilates. I find Pilates not only good for core strength but it's a good relaxing type of exercise for me also. It also helps get me to stretch which I don't do enough of anyway. I'm supposed to stretch 5-10 minutes a day for my neck and I'm often just too darn lazy! Guest guest
Regarding being singled out in class - I thoroughly enjoy my water walking/water aerobics class. I go to the AM session and am probably the youngest (at 55) in the group. Most of the women have had knee and/or hip replacements. One woman has had both hips and both knees replaced but she comes to every session. Anyway, we all have scars it's just that mine is all the way down my back. Also, the daughter of our instructor has scoliosis and went to the same doctor I did before he retired so we had a lot to talk about. Yes, I get the same goofy questions about setting off alarms in airports and I do set them off. I just tell people of my experiences and how the people in some airports and much nicer than others. On days when my legs are really bothering me I will walk with a cane when I go shopping. It's interesting to observe the different reactions you get from people. I have found that most people are much nicer when I am walking with the cane. And yes, shopping carts are just wonderful for support. I have no trouble grocery shopping or Target shopping. Whenever I go to the bookstore or library it seems like the books I'm looking for are usually on the bottom shelf. That's when I'm glad I have my cane for support in getting up and down. Take care everybody and have a good day. Barbara

Guest guest
You are so sweet . Thank you... Correction though - I only have 2 little ones (unless you count dh) This group is the only one that " understands " exercise. I so wish my husband would just say " boy you sure work hard to look the way you do " ... or just some recognition for my commitment.... I'm glad I have you guys......... tonight, was a bad night. I have pink eye so my eyes are killing me.. I'm just wore out and frustrated. I was going to just go to bed, but I knew I had my 21 day challenge so I thought I'd do 30 minutes at least.... WELL, I am happy to report and an hour and 20 minutes later I completed my workout fully This challenge has helped a lot. I am just trying to unwind and get my butt to bed. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.. I can spend some time w/ my boys AND get my workout in at a decent time. Darcy day 7/21 dc completed.. (wow, 33% done already!) I bought the elevator stand for my model, and I find it easier being off floor level. I haven't done any videos that demo floor exercises..I've only used a machine. I haven't weighed myself nor have I taken my measurements yet...something is always happening. But today I put on a pair of jeans and didn't have to do the wiggle to pull them up..they went over my hips easier. On the sleeping again... I had started taking melatonin supplements many months back to try and help me sleep (worked midnites for 31 years and my internal clock was so messed up.) It shouldn't be taken nitely, more for like jet lag, to get yourself back on track. Well, it got so I couldn't sleep without it at all. I'm happy to say I haven't had melatonin all week (started doing the LLs a week ago) and I have been sleeping quite well. Despite some very stressful times. (Iraq) One nite I was tossing and turning, and didn't want to take the supplement, so I did about 15 LL instead. And I went to sleep shortly afterwards and woke rested. Guest guest
Similarly, yoga can be useful exercise. I do about 5 mins every morning after I irrigate and it really helps drain my sinuses for the day plus it keeps me more limber. I find if I skip it I am stuffier. I wish I had time to do more, but I figure 5 mins daily is better than nothing! K. pilates Pilates sounds like a good idea - the photos I've downloaded of some of the exercises off the net look daunting though. :-) I think I really need to have an instructor induct me slowly! I have no excuse because a local lady started a pilates class down the road from where I live once a week... Any kind of weight bearing exercise also helps avoid and fix osteoarthritis, another inflammatory disease. Seems like exercise is the answer to most of life's ills, doesn't it.
