The Bypass is for patients who are 100+ pounds overweight and eat a

lot of high calorie foods, or sweets that may not work for weight

loss with the Band. If you dont have self control over what you

eat, the Bypass may be a better option. Otherwise the Band is a

great option, one that I actually prefer.

I am cc'ing our DPG secretary from whom you can get a copy of the article. It does address the vitamin supplementation -- you still need to give the B12 and Calcium with the PNV. If her iron stores are low or trending down (serum iron and TIBC) then additional iron is recommended. Let me know if you need additional help. PNV + adult or children's chewables is not advisable as it exceeds the upper limit on folate.

The Women's Health and Reproductive Nutrition (WHRN) DPG is a perfect match for those of us working in bariatrics since 80% of our patients are women. It is worth the membership! I am not sure if you are in any groups, but I really recommend this one!

Hi Jeanne,

I saw on the bariatric RD listserve there is a way to access an article re: Pregnancy and Lactation after Gastric Bypass. Can you let me know how to access it. I work with bariatric pts and have my first pregnant woman coming in 2 weeks. Also any words of wisdom you can give me re vitamins for pregnancy and lactation would be great. I'm really worried about that component. Her OB took her off all of her g.b. vitamins and just put her on PNV only. I recommended to her and her OB continue all g.b vits/min and add PNV in addititon too. Not sure about continuing the additional iron we recc Vitron C about 66 mg elemental iron with add'l from MVI and PNV goes over UL for pregnancy of 45mg. Any thoughts, the article probably addresses my concerns. I have only talked to her on the phone

Thanks,

Ellen

I am scheduling the gastric bypass for August. I have seen very few comments

about the bypass. What are your experiences and what should I expect?

Thanks,

Hi ,

Can I ask why bypass surgery and not the sleeve? I hope that there are people on here who can answer your questions because I have only had the sleeves, so I have no knowledge of the bypass surgery.

I wish you great success.

Bypass is a good procedure for some folks.  There are some people with GERD sooo bad that the only way to resolve it is with bypass.  If they get a Nisson Fundoplication to fix the GERD then they can't have WLS.  If they get WLS they can't have the fundoplication.   For some folks the only way to fix GERD and lose weight is bypass.

That's just one example, not sure why is choosing bypass. On Sun, Jun 7, 2009 at 3:19 PM, SuzanneSH <SuzanneSH@...> wrote:

Hi Suzanne, I am having the bypass because my daughter had it and my sister had it. They have done extremely well and I want to do well too. I hope there are some people who will give me some suggestions. I have found all the messages helpful so far and know it will continue. What was it that made you decide on the sleeve versus the other options? N Powery

Suzanne, Thank you for your reply. Both my daughter and sister have had the bypass and have been very successful. I want that success. What was it that made you choose the sleeve over the other options? Powery

Hi ,

My main reason was because I felt I would get better nutrition from my food with the sleeve vs the bypass. My neighbor had bypass surgery and she had a lot of problems with getting any nutrition from her food. I understand that Bypass is better now. The sleeve just seemed like the perfect answer to what I was looking for and I have lost 75 pounds in 7 months, so I am very happy with it. My doctor said I haven't been this healthy in many years. For me it was about being in good health first and losing the weight 2nd.

Take care,

Suzanne

Yes, Suzanne, Health is # 1 for me too. Others think that a 65 yo should just be fat., I do disagree and am not willing to live with my body like this for another 50 years as I have the last 50.

I am having difficulty with my family about the idea of Mexico. I am sold, but they have so many misconceptions. Have others encountered this and what did they do to get around it. I am looking for help in this area. Many thanks in advance. Powery

Hi ,

First I would point out to them the number of RN's who have gone to Dr. Aceves and had this surgery--they are a great judge of what this hospital is like and the care we all received for a medical stand point--it is amazing. Yes, most of us have had people look at us like we are nuts when we say Mexicali--they think of what they see in "Movies,". This isn't the movies, this is real life and I would go to the CDC Center for Disease Control and look up the hospital and Dr. Aceves. I believe there are some great stats there. Bipley is one of the people on this board who has all kinds of stats for the hospital and Dr. Aceves. Send her and E-mail. She is a RN and knows all about explaining to family about going to this hospital vs a US hospital. I believe their infection rate in Mexicali is about 1%. In the US it is much higher.

And there are some people you will NEVER admit that this is an exceptionally clean and very nice and modern hospital for the wealthy people of Mexico--it is a private hospital with all the latest equipment. These people want to bring you down and they aren't adult enough to see the whole picture. I am 63 and hear what you are saying about we have lived too long as being fat--NOT ANY MORE. So I wish you nothing but good health and a great success. You will never regret making the choice to have Dr. Aceves do this surgery. We all wished we had him for our own personal doctor here in the US. Most of us say we would go back in a heart beat if we needed medical care. Do what is right for you and NO ONE ELSE. This is your journey and adventure in life. It will be a life changing event for you and you will never have a regret. The only regret we all have is why didn't we do it sooner.

Hugs,

Suzanne
