Hi,

Tammy is someone who had a lot of pressure from her family about going to Mexico, and they wanted her to go to a doctor in the US--a doctor they didn't know either. Nina from Dr. Aceves office suggested she talk to me, because I had some opposition from my family about having the surgery and going to Mexico. Mostly just about having the surgery. They didn't understand it and had the wrong information.

I have since sent a personal E-mail to Tammy, and I am waiting to hear from her. I expressed the fact that there are soooooooooooooo many people on this board who will be here to support and help her.

If anyone else wants to reassure her that this is a safe and excellent place to have this surgery, please say something. I am sure she reads this board.

Thanks for responding.

Suzanne

I second everything Suzanne says here. My insurance would have paid for

this surgery (I'm pretty sure), but I wanted to go out of network to the

best surgeon for sleeve surgery I could find, and for me that was Dr.

Aceves in Mexicali. I sent another person my husband worked with to him,

as well. This other person happens to be Mexican, too, and he had

concerns, so he had his Kaiser doctor check out Dr. Aceves. His doctor

agreed that Dr. Aceves would be the best choice. (Suzanna, who is Tammy?

I don't see any context for your response here.) In any case, everything

worked out fine. I've lost 130 pounds, below goal, and am healthy and

" cured " of eating the wrong things like I used to do. Don't let your

family dictate your medical decisions, and don't use them as an excuse

if you're worried. A lot of people from the US seek health care in

Mexico because of the quality and the price. Don't be afraid.

talk to you. I had some of the same oppositions that you have had when

it comes to family and going to Mexico. My son was really worried about

me going to Mexicali and having a doctor that he knew nothing about do

this surgery. Well, I have to tell you, that there were two people on

this board who helped me see and understand that this had nothing to do

with what anyone in my family thought. I learned this was ALL ABOUT ME

and NO one else. I am a smart and intelligent lady who had done a lot of

research before I made this choice to go to Mexico and have Dr. Aceves

do the surgery. I just didn't wake up one morning and say " oh I am going

to pick someone randomly in Mexico and go have them remove 85% of my

stomach. I knew what I wanted and did my research. Mexicali is so safe

and there aren't the issues that some of the board towns have. The

hospital is exceptional clean and modern and has all the latest and best

equipment. They have less of an infection rate at this hospital than

most US hospitals.

where I live that had been there before me for surgery with Dr. Aceves.

I respected her professional opinion and I must have asked her a million

questions before I ever said a word to anyone in my family. I checked

various places on the Internet and Dr. Aceves name was always the name

that came up as being the MOST knowledgeable about performing sleeve

surgery. He had been more successful and than doctor (and preformed more

sleeve surgeries than any doctor) in the US and has NEVER had one leak.

He and his staff takes excellent care of you and would never let you go

home until he is satisfied that you are going to be ok to travel. He is

fabulous and as you can tell we all adore him!!!

successful and have the VERY best doctor in the entire world to do this

surgery, why isn't Dr. Aceves the one they want for you—it doesn't

make sense to me that they wouldn't want the very best for you?? Is this

more about they want to control you or do they want you to have the

best? This surgery should have NOTHING to do with the location of the

doctor, but wanting the VERY BEST you can have. If they are not on board

with you—tough this is NOT ABOUT THEM, this is all about YOU. This

is the best choice you could have made for yourself. You will never

receive the kind of care in a hospital in the good old United States as

you will get in Mexicali. If I could make Dr. Aceves my primary care

doctor I would do it in a heart beat—I just don't live close enough

to do that.

I agree with everything that Suzanne said. 100%.I don't think that there are many people out there at all who didn't have someone in their life be skeptical and/or concerned about them going to MX for this surgery. There are so many stigmas and horror stories out there, but guess what? They exist in the US as well.In 1990 my mom had the VGB done in a hospital in ville, FL. The physician knicked her spleen. She lost so much blood, had to have a transfusion and almost died. A month later she found out that the doc was stripped of his hospital priveledges for drinking while doing surgeries.I won't lie and say that I didn't have my own concerns about going to MX for the surgery, but with the help of this board, the obesityhelp.com forum and the hundreds of stories and tesimonials, I knew that I had made

a good, solid choice. Trust yourself. I challenge you to try and find 1 negative review about Dr. Aceves or his staff. I know I couldn't. Now that I have been there, I know why.Educate your family. Show them the research that you have done. Show them Dr. A's stats and credentials. Get on obesityhelp.com, locate his profile and show them page after page after page of raving reviews. When people argued with me about my decision to go to MX and have surgery with Dr. A, I simply said "Wow! You must really be distrustful about my ability to think for myself and make good decisions! Do you really think that low of me?". That typically shut them up! Suzanne is right. This is about YOU and so long as you are comfortable and confident about your decision, they should respect you. Yes, they are concerned and I totally get that, but they

should have a little faith in you that you haven't made a hasty decision.I'm 12 weeks out, down 51.2lbs and would not change a thing about going to Dr. A. If I had to do it all over, I would. If and of my beloved friends or family wanted to have surgery, I would recommend Dr. A without hesitation. (I wouldn't send the people I love to just anyone!) I have total confidence in Dr. A and his staff.Best of luck to you!Sent from my iPhoneOn Nov 19, 2010, at 3:07 PM, "SuzanneH" <SuzanneSH@...> wrote:

My 2 cents:

Dr. Aceves was my surgeon for my lap band. I believe in him and trust he and his staff very much. I have/had a friend who was willing to GIVE me the money for my revision surgery that I'm getting done on Nov. 27th, IF I would go to a U.S. surgeon. I lost the gift of the money and the friendship because I'm so determined to go back to Dr. Aceves, but going to Dr. A is worth it. I trust them completely. BTW, I don't need people in my life who don't trust my judgement whether they have money or not!!! Just my opinion.

I really appreciate everyone's support!! I have a profile on the Obesity Help website in which I've written about my trouble deciding. I'm "Farewell2fat" in case you want to request me. Anyways, I was originally scheduled w/Dr. Aceves for Dec 10th, but cancelled because of family pressure. I found a Dr. in Tx that I'm currently scheduled with, but now having 2nd thoughts. I live in Orlando, so I'd be traveling for surgery either way. This is all so overwhelming, but hearing about everyone's good experience is comforting. I hope to make my final decision by this weekend as I'm suppose to start a 2 w/ liquid Optifast diet onMonday if I choose the Dr. in Tx. I'd be out the $200 for the Optifast if I go back with Dr. A. & I already purchased plane tickets to Tx or my sister (my travel buddy). But I guess I could just as easily change them, even though I'd be paying a $75 fee for changing. All in all, it's just money & I'd rather go with the best of the best at the end of the day.Tammy Tammy please read this

Tammy:

I had a lot of family pressure about going to Mexicali,I felt confident in my decision to stick with Dr Aceves. My surgery

was Dec 2009 and would highly recommend him. The whole experience was very positive so glad I didn't let other peoples fears change my decision.

Tammy,I believe that you and I are friends on OH already and I also live in the Orlando area! Small world! If your family needs living proof, I'm right around the corner!KristaSent from my iPhoneOn Nov 20, 2010, at 11:09 AM, tammy akel <taakel@...> wrote:

Hi Tammy,

If you are Tammy and you are scheduled for surgery on December 10, 2010 this is directed at you.

Hi Tammy, Nina called me and said she gave you my E-mail address. I haven't seen an E-mail from you yet. I think I am the perfect person to talk to you. I had some of the same oppositions that you have had when it comes to family and going to Mexico. My son was really worried about me going to Mexicali and having a doctor that he knew nothing about do this surgery. Well, I have to tell you, that there were two people on this board who helped me see and understand that this had nothing to do with what anyone in my family thought. I learned this was ALL ABOUT ME and NO one else. I am a smart and intelligent lady who had done a lot of research before I made this choice to go to Mexico and have Dr. Aceves do the surgery. I just didn't wake up one morning and say "oh I am going to pick someone randomly in Mexico and go have them remove 85% of my stomach. I knew what I wanted and did my research. Mexicali is so safe and there aren't the issues that

some of the board towns have. The hospital is exceptional clean and modern and has all the latest and best equipment. They have less of an infection rate at this hospital than most US hospitals.

I had the good fortune to have worked with a Nurse here in Oregon where I live that had been there before me for surgery with Dr. Aceves. I respected her professional opinion and I must have asked her a million questions before I ever said a word to anyone in my family. I checked various places on the Internet and Dr. Aceves name was always the name that came up as being the MOST knowledgeable about performing sleeve surgery. He had been more successful and than doctor (and preformed more sleeve surgeries than any doctor) in the US and has NEVER had one leak. He and his staff takes excellent care of you and would never let you go home until he is satisfied that you are going to be ok to travel. He is fabulous and as you can tell we all adore him!!!

So my big question to your family is that if they want you to be successful and have the VERY best doctor in the entire world to do this surgery, why isn't Dr. Aceves the one they want for you—it doesn't make sense to me that they wouldn't want the very best for you?? Is this more about they want to control you or do they want you to have the best? This surgery should have NOTHING to do with the location of the doctor, but wanting the VERY BEST you can have. If they are not on board with you—tough this is NOT ABOUT THEM, this is all about YOU. This is the best choice you could have made for yourself. You will never receive the kind of care in a hospital in the good old United States as you will get in Mexicali. If I could make Dr. Aceves my primary care doctor I would do it in a heart beat—I just don't live close enough to do that.

There is a point in time that you have to take control over your life and say to your family that sometimes we just have to agree to disagree about things. This is your body, not theirs and you are the ADULT who has the RIGHT to make life saving decisions for yourself. PLEASE do not allow your family to take control over this situation. You are on the right track, and you are a big girl and can go there all by yourself. I did and it was just fine. I had excellent care, and they called someone in my family right after surgery and let them know how great I was doing.

You know you want this, you made your choice, so stand up for YOUR RIGHTS. There are so many people on this board, who will support and help you. I promise you that once you are home and your family knows you are OK and then you start to lose the weight, they will come around. My son did and everything is ok now between the two of us. And if they don't then you really don't need that kind of person in your life. They are NOT good for you health or life, it is about controlling you. This is ALL about you being healthy and happy and having the life that you deserve to have. PLEASE do not go to the doctor in the US, you will not have the kind of care that you need and want. Dr. Aceves is the BEST and when you are going through something like this you do want the best for yourself.

Please contact my personal E-mail Suzannesh@... I will answer any questions that you have and I would be happy to talk with you on the phone as many times as you need.

Hey if there is anyone else out that that had problems with their family and they went to Dr. Aceves please chime in and let Tammy know that we all were successful and this is the best place she could have her surgery!

I also live here in Central Florida and I don't know the dr. you are going to in Texas but I can tell you I was Blessed the day I came across Dr.Aceves. I went to Mexico weighing 325 pounds in March 2010 and I now weigh 215 and I now live a real life and love every minute of it. I researched 3 doctors 1 in Tampa 1in Celebration and 1 in Ocala. I went to their seminars twice and was not impressed by any of them. They all told you what you want to hear and make it sound easy. They do not do leak tests and they send you home the next day. I will say traveling to San Diego was great I went with my 17 year old daughter 2 days early and loved it there. The flight home was not very fun but either way you'll be traveling from Texas or California. By the time I left the hospital I was feeling pretty good it's just 4hours on any flight pretty much sucks especially a few days after surgery. There's not a lot more to say than I was a little nervous on my way to Mexico but by the time I got there I felt like a Princess! They wait on you hand and foot. Everyone is so appreciative that you come to their country for the surgery. They explain to you in detail this is not a cure but a tool and you have to work at it. I will never regret my decision I wish I had the money to just go visit all the staff I feel so close them. Dr. A his staff saved my life. I will forever remember them all, even the cleaning lady who was in my room numerous times a day. Thanks I hope this helps you some! My one last statement is that you deserve the best there is when it comes to your life. So STAND up and tell everyone that you are going to go have your surgery with Dr. Aceves. You only have one chance to do it right and he is the RIGHT Choice. Take care and I hope you make the best choice you can for yourself.

Hi Tammy, I am from Canada and I thought I would put in my 2cents. I had my

surgery Sept 28/10 and have lost 51 lbs so far...I will tell you I researched

this surgery till I had to finally stop. My husband also researched this surgery

as well. Both of our research led us directly to Dr Aceves. He is the best.

Every surgeon does this surgery different and not all of there patients have the

success like Dr A's patients. As you can see from the many people on this board

how well everyone has done. Dr A takes the time and you feel like apart of a

unique family of people. He is a very caring and compassionate man who does this

surgery the best...You are nuts not going to Mexicali sorry but I think you are

making a big mistake by not going to the person who is the best at what he does

and does care about you and what he performs on you. I have talked to many

people that have had problems with leaks because they have gone to different

Dr's in the US and Mexico and it's not pretty they become very sick, and is this

something you are willing to live with? It is worth every penny to go see Dr A.

From a very cold Canada..

Oh Tammy,

If I could reach though this damn computer and HUG you I would. You will never ever regret what you are doing. Yeah for you--the one person in life that you need to make happy is yourself! And for a change you are doing this. I want you to know that I worked in education for 24 years and worked around many people who had Master's Degree's and it didn't make them smart or give them one bit of common sense at all. And you are an educated lady who is finally going to do something for herself for the first time in a long time. Remember my phone numbers if you get scared and just want to talk. I am so PROUD of you. I am glad that Nina called me and asked me to talk with you.

THANK you for the many comments for my "sister sleeve" ladies. I appreciate every last word that you took the time to write and let Tammy know about your experience. So I say we have had a great success! Yeah for Tammy you make me very proud that you used your "thinking brain" and made the right choice. I was about ready to volunteer to come along with you.

Hugs to my new best friend!

OMG, I'm SO overwhelmed by all the love!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for each & every response, as they are ALL appreciated! I have had a very tough time at making this decision. It's getting down to the wire & I started to regret the fact that I had cancelled w/Dr. Aceves. I feel the only reason I caved was pressure from my family. I'm a grown woman, I've been married almost 17 yrs years & am a mom to 3 kids, I think I'm COMPLETELY capable of making good decisions. My problem is that I'm too much of a people pleaser. For ONCE in my life I'm going to make a decision despite what anyone else thinks. I'm going with my gut feeling. Dr. A was always my 1st choice. I have researched the HECK out of this surgery & of Dr. Aceves. I feel good about this. If my sister gets upset with me & decides not to travel with me, then oh well! My Mom actually said she'd request off from work to accompany me. Strangely enough, my own parents have NO problem w/me going to Mexico, it's just my two sisters. They happen to be the outspoken & educated ones in the family. Not that I'm a dummy by any means, but my youngest sister happens to have 2 Masters Degrees & is a Speech Pathologist. And, on a side note, she is a sleeve patient herself. She had it done in the US last year & had great results. She keeps trying to convince me to use her Dr, one small problem though, it costs approx $18,000!!! She is single & may be able to juggle that expense, I however cannot!! It's FINAL, I'm going to Mexico. Will email Nina to reschedule. Wish me luck & THANKS again!!! :)> > > > I really appreciate everyone's support!! Tammy,

Theres a lot of us here in central Florida I'm in Lakeland. We all have no problem talking with you and sharing our experiences. I have been so happy with my decision to go to Dr A it has been the best thing to ever happen to me. I agree with everything said, its a wonderful, experience, clean, moderen, the staff is so caring its amazing. The US could learn a thing or three from DR A and his staff. I remember the day I sat my mom down to tell her what I was considering. She stared at me for a second not saying a word, I slid her the wed site address to research for herself. She did for about three days then asked me "When do you want to do this?" I did not have the issue of family, my mom is my family and I told no one else till the day I left. Matter of fact I FB'ed sitting in the Dallas airport. Opps to late. lol You do what you need to, support is important and I support you in your journey no matter what. But I am telling you you can not go

wrong with DR A and his staff. I would do it again in a heart beat and give them a A plus in being the best.

There's not a lot more to say than I was a little nervous on my way to

Mexico but by the time I got there I felt like a Princess! All in all, it's just money & I'd rather go with the best of the best at the end of the day.

Hi Tammy,If you are Tammy and you are scheduled for surgery on December 10, 2010 this is directed at you.Hi Tammy, Nina called me and said she gave you my E-mail address. I haven't seen an E-mail from you yet. I think I am the perfect person to talk to you. I had some of the same oppositions that you have had when it comes to family and going to Mexico. My son was really worried about me going to Mexicali and having a doctor that he knew nothing about do this surgery. Is this more about they want to control you or do they want you to have the best? This surgery should have NOTHING to do with the location of the doctor, but wanting the VERY BEST you can have. You really won't be out the Optifast money because you will be able to eat that after the first 10 days. OMG, I'm SO overwhelmed by all the love!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart

for each & every response, as they are ALL appreciated! I have had a very tough

time at making this decision. It's getting down to the wire & I started to

regret the fact that I had cancelled w/Dr. Aceves. I feel the only reason I

caved was pressure from my family. I'm a grown woman, I've been married almost

17 yrs years & am a mom to 3 kids, I think I'm COMPLETELY capable of making good

decisions. My problem is that I'm too much of a people pleaser. For ONCE in my

life I'm going to make a decision despite what anyone else thinks. I'm going

with my gut feeling. Dr. A was always my 1st choice. I have researched the HECK

out of this surgery & of Dr. Aceves. I feel good about this. If my sister gets

upset with me & decides not to travel with me, then oh well! My Mom actually

said she'd request off from work to accompany me. Strangely enough, my own

parents have NO problem w/me going to Mexico, it's just my two sisters. They

happen to be the outspoken & educated ones in the family. Not that I'm a dummy

by any means, but my youngest sister happens to have 2 Masters Degrees & is a

Speech Pathologist. And, on a side note, she is a sleeve patient herself. She

had it done in the US last year & had great results. She keeps trying to

convince me to use her Dr, one small problem though, it costs approx $18,000!!!

She is single & may be able to juggle that expense, I however cannot!! It's

FINAL, I'm going to Mexico. Will email Nina to reschedule. Wish me luck & THANKS

again!!! :)

Good for you Tammy! I am a little over 2 months out and down 42 pounds - I

couldn't be happier! Dr. Aceves is a wonderful doctor and really cares - you

have made a wise choice, not only financially but overall. Even if Dr. Aceves

was more money, I would have chosen him because of his outstanding surgery

record and glowing recommendations from former patients. You will do great!

Good Luck!!

I maybe a little late joining this conversation but I just HAD to add my two cents. I had lapband done with Dr. A 1/19/07, I got the same opposition you did. My family was up in arms. My sister-in-law who I asked to accompany me said, "no, I do have to consider that I'm a mom of 3 and can't risk my life". Ohhhhh, so frustrating! I'm the mom of two and apparently I was willing to risk my life. UGH!!! Anyway, what I wanted to say about Dr. A... I have had many many many complications from my lap-band. I'm on an only liquid diet and last Sunday ended up in the ER because I couldn't keep water down and was dehydrated. I have talked to Dr. Aceves office SOOO many times, Dr. Campos has called me personally, I have talked to the nurses and been walked through

many horrible times where the US surgeons just wanted to cut me open, Dr. Aceves has worked with me and given me answers that the Dr.'s here in the US have had NO KNOWLEDGE of what I was going through or how to help me, other than to cut me open. Make sure that whatever Dr. you have surgery with is willing to work with you AFTER the surgery. Dr. A's office has received nothing more than the money I paid when I had surgery. Yet they have continued to support me, read my X-ray's and fluoroscopes when I have had them done, answer my emails and endless questions. They haven't ever said "sorry, you are out of luck, our part is done". They really have the BEST care for each patient. This WLS will change your life and it is only for the better!! Even with all the problems I have had, I wouldn't give it up to get that 100+ lbs back on this body!!Blessings, Cyrena

Strangely enough, my own

parents have NO problem w/me going to Mexico, it's just my two sisters. :)

Just because the phone rings, doesn't mean that you have to answer it and put up with this stress. If you have caller ID let it ring. You can make the choice to talk or not talk. YOU are so RIGHT, you do not need this stress right now, and you may need to tell them.

What they don't understand is ok, sometimes you just can't make them understand. But, you know in your heart and head that you are doing the right thing for YOU. Remember this is ALL about you and NOT them. They are not living with your body you are. So you have the right to do what is right for you. You have earned this right and they do NOT have the right to do this to you!

It is very normal to be scared, nervous, excited and all the other feeling and emotions that are going on. I want you to get out a catalog with clothes in it. Pick out an outfit that you want to wear a year from now. Keep that thought in your mind and remember you are going to look so darn cute in that new outfit a year from now.

Hugs and good thoughts coming your way.

Hi Tammy,

I'm new here but I am also going to have my VSG with Dr Aceves very soon. My Cardiologist would not give me clearance until I had a Mibi Lexiscan Stress Test done 1st which took some time to schedule and I just got the results last week...it's perfect! So now I have to fax it to Nina tomorrow and see about getting a date scheduled...the sooner, the better. I want you to know that I know how you feel about lack of family support...it feels awful...so lonely...and like no one respects my judgement for my own body. The man I have lived with for over 30 years has not been supportive either of me going to Mexico. He even offered to give me $15,000 towards the surgery if I would have it done here in the US. We have a "Bariatric Center of Excellence" hospital about 25 min from my house. They even have the latest technology using the DaVinci Robot to assist in the Laparoscopic surgery. However, after doing quite a bit of research, none of the Dr's there have anywhere near the experience that Aceves has for VSG. So, I'm going to Mexico alone.

I have only told two people, my significant other and my sister, and they both think I'm crazy! I have them sworn to secrecy though because I do not want to tell my adult son (lives about one and 1/2hrs away) until I return. My sister had a Laparoscopic RNY in Aug 2010 here in the US and suffered a terrible incisional infection that went about 4-5" deep. She had to have a visiting nurse come to her house everyday for several weeks to clean out the wound and pack it (very painful I hear), so the US Surgeon and US hospital (also a Bariatric Center of Excellence) didn't end up being any better for her.

I see you are leaving on Dec 8th from FL. Is your surgery still scheduled on the 1oth? Are you going alone? What date do you plan to fly back home? I'm trying to make sense of all the traveling and what I'll be able to handle. I prefer not to stay in a hotel at all after my surgery before returning home since it would probably be difficult to prepare /store the clear post op liquids we need. I live in northern New England so it will be at least a 7 or 8 hr flight for me depending on how many stops. I wish I could go at the same time as you so that we could support each other there thru this, but I still have to get a surgery date and probably couldn't get one that quickly anyway. I really want to get it over with too, before Christmas if at all possible.

Have you started the Pre-Op Diet yet? Does Nina E-mail that to you? I would like to have all the post op info (copy of diet, required follow up care, etc) before I even leave to go there so I can purchase the necessary items. Did Nina send it in advance?

Sorry for all the questions but I'd love to hear from you and hear how you are doing. You can E-mail me direct if you prefer.

Hi Tammy,

Great news on your surgery date with Dr. Aceves. I just got home last night from having the Revision from the band to the sleeve. I will not pretend like this is the easiest thing I have ever done but I'm hoping it's going to prove to be the most productive. I'm only 4 days out post op. Drove from MX to Phoenix last night, so feeling a little weak and tired today.

I too went alone but by the time you go through all the necessary procedures with your group sleevers, you will feel like you have been friends forever and develop meaningful relationships that you will always cherish. You don't feel along. I am a very social person. So just be social and realize you are all in this together. Don't be afraid about going alone.

I also had a friend who was willing to pay for the entire cost of the surgery if I would have it done in the US. Believe me, finances are difficult for me, I have been on disability since 9/11/01 as I was injured in the World Trade Center towers during the attacks on that day in NYC. Although the cost is great and I had to take out a loan, it's worth it to me to be able to go back to Dr. Aceves. Words cannot express my gratitude the Dr. A & his team. I wouldn't go to any other Dr. now matter how cheap I could get it done.

You will have no worries my dear and you will love them even more after this surgery. I wish you the very best on your journey!!!
