From my research on WLS seems like the DS would be the best of all the WLS.

Am I missing something???

Any help and insight into picking the best surgery for losing the weight and

keeping it off over the years.

Thanks

Bands and sleeves are restrictive only.  I don't want DS anymore than I want RNY.  The side effects with DS are pretty extreme and not something I would ever want to deal with.  It's far too drastic for me.  I know I can lose and maintain with restriction alone.  There are folks that can't.

Thing is, we all became obese from eating white carbs.  There is no procedure type that will help you lose weight if you eat white carbs including RNY/DS.  Either way white carbs are typically our demons.  Regardless of surgery type you have to cut down on flour and sugar.  So in my mind, why go the drastic route of DS when the end diet is similar?

A sleeve is the first half of DS.  If one gets a sleeve and later finds they need the malabsorption then it can be revised to DS.  Most doctors will not do DS until your BMI is 50 or greater.  For me, I'd still want a sleeve.  With RNY if you eat white carbs such as sugar you might dump.  With DS you stink.  Pick your poison? ;o)

The first part of the DS is actually the sleeve. The total DS reroutes your intestines for more malabsorbtion. I didn't want the malabsorbtion because of potentially more vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. Additionally, I read on a Website that one of the bariatric doctors said that she can always tell a DS or RnY patient from their skin color - which is due to the malabsorbtion/nutrient issues.

However, as Bipley says, some people need the malabsorbtion and are unable to lose any other way due to food addictions and lifestyle. For me, I would definitely try the VSG first and then go for the DS if you really need it. Many people have been very successful with just the sleeve and not the second part of the DS.

Good luck!
