Just wanted to say that this surgery IS available in Canada - I know there are doctors here in AB who do it, Drs in BC, and Drs in Montreal. It's just that the wait is 2-3 years even if you are very heavy (BMI 45+) - my BMI was about 34.6 at the time of surgery, and I wasn't about to gain more AND wait several years to get it done here. I recently read a study released by our local obesity expert, Dr. Arya Sharma, which called for greater availability of the surgery in Canada after analyzing the cost of care for complications for a handful of patients who had it done abroad. One patient's care ended up costing Alberta $160,000, so hopefully the government will wake up and realize they need to train more bariatric surgeons. There are great surgeons in Mexico, like Dr. Aceves, and then there are others who are not so great and unfortunately, patients don't always pick the best and then our public healthcare has to pay for the consequences.

Hi ,Congrats on booking your surgery! You won't regret it! Just make sure to follow the pre op diet and all doctors instructions to a " T " ! Enjoy the experience and share it with everyone! I tell everyone that asks about it! And we need to share the knowledge with our fellow Canadians so that our country might wake up some day and start offering this surgery in Canada! The chat boards on verticalsleevetalk.com are very helpful. They are very encouraging too! Good luck to you!

Hey ,

Congrats on your 40 pounds that is wonderful! Glad to hear you say it is not a piece of cake. It takes effort and relearning when it comes to eating. But, it is all worth it.

Thanks for saying what you said.

Hugs,

Suzanne

Thanks ,

What would you say is the most difficult for you? Are you getting your protein in? Do you feel like your are suffering from malnutrition? Someone had just said that in one of there posts. Did you have your surgery with Dr A? What other advice can you offer?

Thanks

Words can not express how happy and excited I am for you. I am just past my 3 month mark post-op and have never looked back. It was by far the best thing I have ever done for myself. I'm down 40 ponds since surgery in just 3 months and thats to me just unbelievable. I'm not going to candy coat it for ya its been hard at times but much more in the emotion department then anything else. Believe me you learn really quick how uncomfortable it can be when you eat one to many bits. Ask me anything I'll be happy to answer you about my journey.

Wow the most difficult thing for me has been emotional, the realization this is real and no one or thing can take it away from me. Always feeling its going to fail or I'm going to start failing again like always. Its been hard for me to accept the help I have given myself sometimes. But then I eat a meal and the sleeve will remind me of what I have done and I can not over eat. It will not let me eat more then that 4 oz or so. Its great!! And I have not once felt deprived. I eat what I want, I try new things each week to see if its going to agree with me and I keep a food diary of what works and the foods that bother me. Like I can eat angel hair pasta but egg noddles stick and cause pain. Go figure. * Its been hard for me to not drink with my meals, I'm

getting better with that because I feel better when I do not drink. Have I ever felt that I'm suffering from malnutrition no I have felt great. Have I worried about malnutrition yes, thats why I try hard to eat good foods and take my vitamins. Gummys are working for me now, at first they made me sick. *Protein, yes I get it in as much as possible the full amount they suggest, no. I'm getting in about 40 grams or so between protein shakes, drinks and food. I don't know how I could possible get 70! * Yes I had my surgery on 5/15/2010 with Dr. A and would do it all over again. I'm down 40 pounds since surgery now at 174 and am so excited to be looming near the 160's. I weight every Saturday. *Advice lets see, dont freak out like I did when you dont lose weight every week. My third week I did not lose and thought I was doing something wrong. Its just that my/your body was/is adjusting, its normal. Keep that food journal it

helps, eat slow, small bites trust me on that one. lol And exercise even if its just walking your block for 15 minutes a night. It will help not only your mental state but help tone the body as you lose. Oh and talk to me or friends to work through it, dont suffer alone when it gets hard, we have all been there and we can help. Keep in touch, I'm here for you, many are and I promise I will always tell you about my experience if you ask me I'll be honest.

Oh and look at my pics in the group photos, its under Re's journey. I tried to post pics that would help people become more comfortable with their own up and coming journey.

Hope I helped, write anytime,

Ah thanks Suzanne. My main issues have been emotional that's been much harder for me then anything physical. Now I have been feeling great considering the major surgery I had, the surgery we all had. I have had very few problems and the physical stuff is to be expected with sudden weight loss and major changes of/in the body. I have been just beating myself up with feelings of still being a failure! I'm sure any day its all going to fall apart like every other diet and attempt. Its very tough to change that mind set. Its taken me a few good cries of joy and frustration to get past these last three months. So anyone who reading this its ok to cry, its ok to have these feelings, talk to us and remember its all good. I would never change what I did. Its getting better with each

passing week.

Hey ,

We were all sure that we were going to fail at this. All we had was a history of failure. So it is normal to assume that this will be a failure too. Oh that is SO WRONG to feel that way, but in time you will see and feel and understand that this is a lifestyle change and you are NO longer on a diet. You will one day understand and know that you will not fail at this and that you will NEVER gain this weight back because of the lifestyle changes that you have made in the way you eat and what you eat. Everything that you are feeling are the same things that almost everyone that has had this surgery has already felts. Time will prove to you that this really was you answer. I am almost 2 years out and I stay the same weight with a pound or two. So I know that I can do this for the rest of my life. Yeah for me and having weight loss surgery. It saved my life, I am healthy, happy and will live a lot longer because for me it was the right thing to do. You will come to feel the same way too.

Hugs,

Suzanne

I always feel failure as well. The amount of weight I have lost and gained is unreal along with the amount of money I have spent. I had a dream that they did the vsg backwards and I gained weight instead of losing. That how afraid of failure I am. Its always the unknown. Hi ,

Well, we have ALL spent a lots of $$$$$$$ for various diet and gimmicks and failed. I know without a doubt if you change your lifestyle once you have the VSG you will always be successful. And it is so easy to change your lifestyle, once the first month is over. I never feel deprived and I eat healthy and enjoy all the food that I am now eating. You always have to be aware of carbs--they are your killer. But there are so many thing that you will be able to eat. I am not saying you can't have carbs, I am say in very small amounts and the right ones--there are good carbs and bad carbs. I always try to get my Protein in first and the veggies and some fresh fruit. I will not tell you that you will never have a cookie, pie, ice cream or cake. You will but only in small amounts and pretty soon your never think about these things. Instead of having an entire piece of cake you will have a sliver and you will be satisfied and happy with that.

It is a lot of head games and you just have to have talks with yourself or us! You will be just fine I promise you. Change is what scared all of us--but this is the LAST change you will ever have to make. You will morn the loss of the AMOUNT of food you used to eat, but in time you will look at all that food and say "Oh my gosh I used to eat ALL that food." It will make you sick thinking about all that food you used to eat. And you will look at people and think how can they eat all that?

Hang in there life is about to change for you and all for the better.

Hugs,

Suzanne
