I feel the pain on this one and I am praying for you. Keep us posted. The surgery will happen at the right itme. You're smart not to go in with an infection for a myriad of reasons you already know. Hang in there.

Hey Everyone,I was supposed to fly to San Diego today for my VSG tomorrow with Dr A but had to cancel my airline reservation late yesterday afternoon after an appt with my ENT Dr who said no way can I have the surgery right now. He said I possibly have MRSA, or at the very least it's a Staph infection in my nose! I get the culture results tomorrow. He put me on an antibiotic right away. This is what happened. I'm a new CPAP user for sleep apnea within the last month. I had a mask with those little "pillows" that go in your nose and woke up with a sore nose. I changed masks right away to a different type. I thought it was getting better but on Sunday it really started throbbing, aching up to my eye and down to my gums. I alerted Nina right away and told her I would see my Dr on Mon (yesterday) but that I probably had an infection going on, even though I didn't have a fever. Nina checked with Dr A and he said if it turns out to be infection,

then we'd have to cancel the surgery. So that's where I'm at now...keeping my fingers crossed that it's not MRSA! Will let you all know when I find out for sure. I'm hoping this will all be cleared up so that I can get the surgery rescheduled in Jan. Anyone scheduled for Jan yet? What date?Hope no one minds but I'm going to double post this over at the OH forum since I'm on that one too.Priscilla

Great news! Got a call this a.m., No MRSA, just Staph which is bad enough but

I'm feeling better already after being on the antibiotics for just 48 hrs.

Thanks for your prayers. Priscilla

I find it kind of funny that your family is hassling you about Mexico when you got the staph right at home. You might remind them of that. Hi Priscilla,

I have been where you are about your family giving you a bad time about going to Mexico. I want you to point out that the CDC (Center for Disease Control in the US) says that this hospital --Almater in Mexicali has LESS infection than any US hospital. Tell them that you will be seeing 2 EXCELLENT doctors 3 times a day. They come and check on you that many times per day! Ask them when they were in any US hospital did they see any doctor 3 times a day let alone 2 doctors???????--I don't think so. The are basing their opinions of what the media has told them, they have NOT really taken the time to educate themselves about what the real medical care is like in Mexico. Because of they did, they would be cheering you on. Shame on them for not taking the time, they listen to other people who are sure we are going to die in Mexico, and if I could pick Dr. Aceves to be my PC doctor I would in a heart beat. This man is so down to earth, intelligent, kind, caring and will spend as much time as you need answering your question. I never get that from any of my doctors in the US.

I want you to remember this really IS ALL ABOUT YOU and NO one else. You are a grown up lady who has made the choice to have this surgery to save your life. You can not live your life for other people. So tell them that if they can not support you, that you would like them to just say nothing at all. You do know what you are doing. And if they continue, then you have to back away from them until after you have the surgery. Then they will be forced to see that you are safe, alive, and becoming healthy. You may have to agree to disagree right now. We are here to support you. Keeping coming back to this board for help and support. We have been where you are right now.

Hugs,

Suzanne

I love this one, I got recently...A little background, I had my surgery 4 years ago, Aceves' office has supported me for the last 4 years, answering questions, looking at fluroscopies, Dr. Campos has personally called to answer my questions - this is all AFTER surgery while they are getting no additional money from me. Ok back to my point...I was talking about how awesome Dr. Aceves is and how he is world renowned, he travels to Paris to teach other doctors how to do these surgeries, he is THE best. So my mom says "then why doesn't he practice in the United States" I just stared at her. I had no answer for a question so crazy.I feel for those of you who are getting the opposition from family and friends, it is hard to deal with, but believe it is oh so sweet to say "I

told you so!" :) Hang in there,CyrenaDoBand: 1/19/07240/128/150start/now/goal From: "SuzanneSH@..." <SuzanneSH@...> Sent: Fri, December 10, 2010 2:45:42 PMSubject: Re: Fw: Re: HAD TO POSTPONE MY 12/8 VSG!! :( :(

Amen & Amen. I just had my revision surgery Nov. 27th, have already lost 19 lbs, I only have 60 to go, LOL. As far as doctors go, I've never had any doctor as kind as these 2 gentlemen. They never treat you as if they want you to hurry up, let them out of the room, so they can get to the next patient. They listen and they CARE. After you share this experience with them, you'll want to be related them, LOL. They just feel like a part of your family. They do not have the typical US doctor approach which is very stand offish. They are dedicated to helping others and it shows!!! You are in the best of hands Priscilla, be excited, really excited. You have something GREAT to be excited about. You can feel secure in your decision.

Congratulations,

Everyone, thank you so much for all your words of encouragement...special thanks to you you Suzanne, I had tears in my eyes after I read your note.

I have to prove to my family all the positive statistics about Dr Aceves (# of bands, sleeves, bypasses, complication rate, infection rate, etc) and Alamater Hosp but they have to come from unbiased official sites, not Dr Aceves' websites. Thanks for the tip Suzanne on the infection rate posted on the CDC in the US but I couldn't find it. I'm going to appeal to Bipley to help me out because the sites on her blog to check on Mexican Dr's are in Spanish and I just can't follow how to use them. If anyone has any other official sites they found during their research, I'd really appreciate if you posted them, as I'm sure others may be curious too. I did find him listed as a regular member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery but not on the site of the American College of Surgeons where his website says he is a member. It could be that I'm not searching it correctly so if anyone can link that for me, that would be great.

My sister (just had gastric bypass in early Aug'10) & her Dr feel that 3 days after surgery is way too soon for me to travel a good 7-8 hrs back home to here in NH. Were you all OK for such a long flight after 3 days. They feel that I need to stay 7-10 days in the area before flying due to the risk of blood clots and that I need to build up some strength first. How do I take care of my clear liquid diet in a hotel? Do the rooms have refrigerators? Will the restaurant supply me with hot water whenerver I need it? How can I buy my Isopure? So many logistics traveling alone.

Thanks a million you guys & girls,

Priscilla

Why doesn't he practice in the United States? Because he's Mexican. It'd

be like me, being a doctor making a great reputation, and then someone

saying why don't you practice in Mexico? Because I'm from the US. The US

has not set any standard for these things; Dr. A has set a standard for

this particular WLS and he happens to be from Mexico, so there you go.

My mom was so worried that I was going to Mexico for surgery. She thought I was insane. She lost many nights sleep over it and she is the one who came with me. Now she even tells people what a wonderful place it is and if I ever have to go back she is going to go with me. She misses the nice people there. I had my surgery Tuesday and Thursday I asked if it was okay to go to the mall and Dr A said yes. We grabbed a cab and spent 2 hours there shopping. I was not conecerned a bit. It truly is a wonderful place and I live in Canada where we are suppose to have such good health care. There's is top notch...Tell your family to contact my mom, she was the biggest skeptic ever and now she knows different and raves about the place.

It

could be that I'm not searching it correctly so if anyone can link that for me, that would be great.

Tell your mom He can practice in US but before has to start allover againg as a new MD and after that has to apply for the spelciaty (Surgery, if is accepted )as a new residency and do it for 3-4 years before he can perform any surgery by himself ah all that time he will be treat as a big moron without count all his world renowned and others that dosen't have the knowledge that he has will be treated in a better way, this is very complicate issue.

I had no answer for a question so crazy.I feel for those of you who are getting the opposition from family and friends, it is hard to deal with, but believe it is oh so sweet to say "I told you so!" :) Hang in there,CyrenaDoBand:

Aceves to be my PC doctor I

would in a heart beat.

Hugs,

Suzanne

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much...you guys are just the best! I wrote to Nina last night and

told her what is going on with my family and asked if she could supply some

official websites (not Dr Aceves') where his stats of no leaks, his infection

rate, etc are posted. Also where the public info is posted as to the infection

rate of Almater Hospital. I'm also trying to work on getting into a local

bariatric program that does Bands, VSG's and Gastric Bypasses to see if they

will allow me into their program for my aftercare only. I called last Thurs and

had to leave a voicemail but no one has called me back yet. I know that will

help put my family more at ease and it's a good connection to have anyway in

case of any complications. I live in NH and it's not like I can just jump on a

plane and go down there for a complication. I'm going to try calling again

today and hope I don't get the annoying voice mail again. This hospital is a

" Bariatric

Center of Excellence " too!!

What you are looking for does not exist. There are no non-Dr. A websites

that list his stats. That does not exist for any doc, including US docs.

What you do is verify that other issues regarding Dr. A are true. You

verify the track record of your coordinator. Many claim their docs are

FACS, they are not. THIS, you can verify. Many claim their docs are board

certified in surgery and they are not. THIS you can verify. Many claim

their docs are ASMBS, they are not and THIS you can verify.

The way you do it is this, you already verify info, you already know this

info before you call the coordinator. Then you ask the coordinator these

questions that you already know the answer to and see if s/he is honest.

THAT is how you do it.

You don't do it by asking for websites that do not even exist for US docs.

You do your research, you verify what you are told in every single area

that you can.

BTW, a COE means NOTHING!  COE does not mean a doctor is skilled or good.  It means he has policies and procedures in place in case something goes wrong.  That is ALL it means.  One of the biggest butchers in bariatric medicine had his privileges to practice medicine revoked in Mexico yet he is a COE in Las Vegas.  Go figure.

The beauty of a sleeve is that you do not need a bariatric surgeon for aftercare.  Let's say you have the worst of the worst complication, a leak.  You are not limited to a bariatric surgeon, you can go to any GI surgeon, any general surgeon, OR.. any bariatric surgeon that is not a band mill.

Life is a world difference with a sleeve vs. any other WLS surgery.  Life is good with sleeves. On Mon, Dec 13, 2010 at 1:07 PM, Bipley <bipley@...> wrote:

I am not sure why you are posting asking if he is FACS, you have seen for yourself that he is FACS.  ?????

Here are some sites that you may want to look at also. You will find more information about him. My feeling honestly is you can show them all this stuff and they are NOT going to change their minds. Some people will NEVER admit that they were wrong. I hope they do, but you can do this without their approval. You are a grown-up girl and this is YOUR life not theirs. When the see you return home is the first step, and as you start dropping the weight and they see you are becoming healthy that also helps. Please don't let them control you, you are the ONLY one who can control you.

Priscilla

You do NOT need them for any after care for the Sleeve. All you will need is your primary care doctor to run some blood panels on you to check your levels. Don't waste your time on these other doctors. We can all agree that you will NOT need any after care from them.

Hi Everyone,Thank you so much...you guys are just the best! I wrote to Nina last night and told her what is going on with my family and asked if she could supply some official websites (not Dr Aceves') where his stats of no leaks, his infection rate, etc are posted. Also where the public info is posted as to the infection rate of Almater Hospital. I'm also trying to work on getting into a local bariatric program that does Bands, VSG's and Gastric Bypasses to see if they will allow me into their program for my aftercare only. I called last Thurs and had to leave a voicemail but no one has called me back yet. I know that will help put my family more at ease and it's a good connection to have anyway in case of any complications. I live in NH and it's not like I can just jump on a plane and go down there for a complication. I'm going to try calling again today and hope I don't get the annoying voice mail again. This hospital is a "Bariatric Center of Excellence" too!!
