Do any of you know if you can use the cost of this surgery as a deduction on your income taxes as a medical expense? Obviously it is a medical expense but I am wondering if having it done out of the country makes a difference.

Talked to my CPA about this very thing since my husband and I had the surgery this year, and we flew from Louisiana twice. He said that we needed a letter from my doctor stating that he suggested the surgery for us and why. My family doctor was more than cooperative. From: <ohscrap@...> Cc: debra.garza@...Sent: Friday, October 14, 2011 11:09 AMSubject: Re: Medical expense for income tax filing?

Hi,

I also claimed mine when I did my surgery 3 years ago along with my air fare. It is money you paid our of your pocket. So claim it.

Me too. The same does NOT apply for plastic surgery unless you can get a doctor to certify that it was necessary for medical reason--like an "apron" so big that it is causing back trouble.
